  • Tonights show was disapointing... Morrissey was great, the songs were great, but the crowd was few and subdued.

I havent seen Moz since the 1993 Bona Drag tour ( what a tour ). It is sad that the lackluster turnout was all that South Bend had to offer. Great to hear some Smiths tunes (How soon, Bigmouth, Shoplifters, Light ) and Moz seemed to be at least enjoying himself despite the lack of energy in the crowd. What a shame because the Morris Civic Center is a great venue.

Thanks for coming to South Bend!!

  • What is the seating capacity of this venue?

How many people would you say were in attendance?

  • No NMHIF or Last Night I Dreamt, but we did get Shoplifters and Jack the Ripper. Overall, Moz seemed mostly amused by the small attendance in the very unmetropolitan South Bend. (At one point he asked "Did you really think we were going to sell out tonight? I bet you wish we were the Dixie Chicks!" after some amount of booing, he added "only kidding").

There was a great deal of banter from The Man in general, including the obligatory nod to Julia to whom he gave the mic. He asked her the "tedious question" of "how many?" to which she replied "256." That is a lot of Morrissey...I think South Bend was impressed.

In answer to the question of why Let Me Kiss You was not released in the US, Moz answered "well, it's really complicated. You're far too young to understand things like that."

3 costume changes tonight, and not much in the way of stage invasion, although by the sound of it the bouncers were much more civil at this show than the last few.

It was nice that Morrissey was able to laugh off the small crowd (certainly no more than 500 people) and althoug the set was short, it very well might have been the best pop show ever witnessed in South Bend, Indiana!

    Songs:
The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get.

    Stage:
Probably 8-10 people got on. Moz wore 4 different shirts, throwing 2 to the audience. 2 Black, one light blue, one reddish orange.

    Banter:
Near the beginning he made a quizzical face and started to act as if he was counting heads with his index finger, (obviously making fun of the small turn out).

Asked if people in the upper section were cold, possibly needing a blanket for their knees. "It can be arranged". (also on turn out)

    Audience:
Capacity was 2560, there was probably 1/4th of that, if that much. A quarter to half of those people were lame ducks, just sort of standing there most of the time. A fair number of people seemed to have come alone.

  • Morrissey performance dramatic

The songs from 'You Are the Quarry' were among the strongest of the night

    REVIEW

    By ANDREW S. HUGHES
    Tribune Staff Writer

SOUTH BEND -- After he introduced the members of his band Wednesday night at the Morris Performing Arts Center, Morrissey said, "Don't say hello to me. I'm not nice."
He proved otherwise with his superlative performance at the Morris.
Morrissey's music is dramatic, and he performs it as much in the way an actor hits emotional extremes as a singer hits the extremes of his vocal range.
Most of the set list was made up of songs from "You Are the Quarry," Morrissey's most recent album, and the material went over well with the audience.
It should have. The songs from "You Are the Quarry" were among the strongest of the night.
"I Like You" featured an immediate and urgent delivery from Morrissey set against a subdued backing from his band that gave his vocals a dynamic forcefulness and sense of purpose.
On "You Know I Couldn't Last," it was as if Morrissey was reeling, physically and vocally, from the emotions he was singing about in the rock sections of the song.
Morrissey's off-the-cuff hand gestures on "How Can Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel?" made it seem as if he was tossing aside the contradictions he lists in the lyrics about how people treat him and perceive him.
On "Everyday Is Like Sunday," Morrissey's voice was commanding, high and filled with presence.
When it came to songs by the Smiths, Morrissey invested himself in the performance of "Shoplifters of the World Unite" and "Bigmouth Strikes Again" with as much energy and purpose as he did his new material. These weren't mere run-throughs to satisfy the older fans but vital parts of the show.
About every third song or so, Morrissey addressed the crowd, often in a humorous way, as when he referred to the size of the audience, about 600 people.
"You didn't really expect us to sell out, did you?" he said. "We're not the Dixie Chicks, much as you wish we were."
When he introduced the title of his most recent album, "You Are the Quarry," he thanked the audience "for downloading it."
Morrissey's stage mannerisms were at times sensual, at times playful and, when he interacted with the audience, even gregarious.

  • HE PLAYED SHOPLIFTERS OF THE WORLD UNITE? and you people are discussing politics? someone tell me about the show.
    please...

also i must say that by voicing his support for Kerry at most shows, the Moz himself has made it a relevant issue on this site.
but anyway, shoplifters... i am so jealous.

  • The Pub Show... (Score:2, Informative)

    some observations:

Morrissey signed a couple of autographs during the show--some woman in the front had a painting of Moz and handed it to him with a pen...he signed it.

Morrissey asked the crowd who the last "super-trendy" band to come through was...lots of answers shouted, to which Morrissey replied, "Who? The Ozark Mountain Daredevils?" People finally mentioned U2, to which Moz said..."You....too?"

For the obligatory Julia moment, he asked "So, how many do you think?" She replied "256." I thought she was guessing the attendance... But Moz replied, "That's alot, it's not just anybody. Not Grand Funk Railroad, but Mor-Mor-Mor...." Crowd shouts "MORRISSEY!" Moz: "Yes, that's the name."

Morrissey bashed on South Bend's lack of a good radio station and the state of American radio in general.

One of his first comments on the lack of people in attendance was "Welcome to our pub show."

There may have been more ushers than attendees in the balcony.

I went to a show in Salt Lake City in 2002 at the Zephyr Club, which supposedly had a capacity of 450. While we were packed into that venue, it seemed that there were less there last night. Still, it was a beautiful theater.

During "Sunday" Moz helped lift a guy from the front row onto the stage. He hugged him and one of "Mozzer's Men", the one that looks like the rapper Fat Joe was very gentle in guiding him back to his seat...no Radio City style manhandling here. A girl then jumped on stage at the end of the song, to which Moz said, "You timed it a bit late, didn't you?" He went back to her and shook her hand, and Fat Joe gently assisted her back into the pit.

The whole thing seemed more like a personal appearance than a big venue. Still an incredible night...Shoplifters and Ripper making reappearances and Morrissey in good humor about the whole thing, considering it may have been the smallest crowd he's played to since The Smiths opened for Blue Rondo A La Turk...

  • I must say it was a very surreal standing there watching Morrissey. He was very respectful considering the size of the crowd. I did said thank you and he replied, "for what". I said for comming to South Bend. My wife and I have seen Morrissey 3 times and each time we have been lucky to enjoy him at small venues. His apearance at the State Theater was classic. The HOB in Chicago was very intimate. But last night was tonic, although there were many posers amoung the small crowd. Hopefully those crashing bores will change their flagitious ways. The true Morrissey fans new what it was all about. Boz was smashing and Gary Day was right in front of me as if he wanted me to play the bass on two solos. Morrisey kindly shook my hand amoung every one else in the front row. I think he admired my purple shirt. I would also like to thank the ticket resellers for buying all the seats and losing there profits to profide us lucky Moz Fans with the Pub show.

  • I hope to shake Morrissey's hand, and I also hope to catch his shirt. I simply adore Morrissey. I saw him in Chicago earlier this year at HOB- but the crowd was lackluster at best. I didn't catch a shirt. The one guy who did was terribly arrogant.

What was sad: I had an awful bout of acne when I last saw Morrissey. I am 31 and too old for acne. My face will be nice for this concert on OCT 15. Say Hi to me.

    With love,

    "And I just can't explain/ So I won't even try to."
  • I would like to reiterate how remarkable it was (at least to me) for Morrissey and Co. to give such a good performance to such a small crowd. One would have never known the size of the crowd if soley the energy and enthusiasm he and the band demonstrated during this concert was looked at. With such an attendance I think it would be hard for a performer to generate the necessary vibe (or desire for it) to put on a really good show. I think some performers, disheartened, wouldn't even bother; but I get the feeling that it was no work at all for Morrissey and the band to have a good time on stage last night (loved how Moz moved about -- just classic). They are highly professional, clearly, and enjoy what they are doing.

Thanks to Morrissey for making my first show a great one.

  • As usual, Morrissey played an awesome show. The crowd was pretty lame, I was kinda getting stared at by the people around me.... I was goin' nuts. Anyway, I dipped out as soon as Morrissey finished the lyrics for "You Know I Couldn't Last" I saw him get drapped in a black coat and he ran off stage. I took off immediatly and waited patiently outside for him. He came and went very quickly, which was very disappointing. I waited for a good 40 minutes however, hoping to get a chance to talk with the band even though security insisted they had gone. I knew they hadn't, they were still playing when I was out there! Then Boz came out, went right back in, and about 5 minutes later a gentlemen named Charlie escorted me and 4 other fans inside to the after party. Hah, they offered us drinks and everything. Got to hang out with everyone, Gary, Boz, Deano, and Jesse. The last member wasn't there, which was kinda disappointing. It was an incredible experience... they are all exceptionally polite and nice people. They all signed my "You Are the Quarry" which is great. Got to talk with them a bit, just kinda shot the breeze. It was the greatest experience ever. I cannot wait to see them again in Chicago!!

And to top it all off, I snagged the sign that said "Morrissey : Dressing Room"

Imagine being ten feet from Morrissey, and having numerous opportunities to shake his hand, no matter where your seat was supposed to be! Most important, he and the bank rocked!!! His voice was incredible, he was in good spirits, and he played both Jack the Ripper (a personal fave) and Every Day is Like Sunday. And he opened with How Soon is Now! I doubt I will ever have an opportunity to have an intimate experience like that again, and it was simply beyond description. Thank God for Morrissey!!!!

  • Hey all! North Carolina's very own Swedo got onstage during "There is a Light!"
It was incredible. I had just driven 15, yes, 15 hours to get there (I got -- of course -- a flat tire in Ohio and, of course, no spare, so I was 3 hours behind schedule.)
I got to the venue during the last song before the encore and they wouldn't let me to the front because willcall was closed (of course!) and I had a FRONT ROW ticket (of course!), but I think they saw the desperation on my face and let me in just before the encore.
I had a great moment with Morrissey when he came over to my side of the stage; then he walked back over toward stage center and I HAD to do it, had to jump on the stage. I swear to God I've never had a feeling like that in my life!
I can't put it into words what it was like to hug and kiss Moz. It was almost like transcendence. Ah, beauty.

She said, "Eh, I know you, and you cannot sing," and I said, "that's nothing, you should hear me play piano..."
  • Yes, it was a small crowd. I, myself, didn't notice the lack of zeal that some have mentioned the crowd had. I suppose that could be due to the fact that I was so zoned in on the man dancing in front of me and couldn't stop weaping for the first few songs. It was the best night for me, because I was front, center, in a 'heavenly trance'...and yes, he actually very graciously signed a painting I had done of him. After seeing him twice in concert.. in larger, more populated venues.. I feel entirely grateful for being able to experience him in such a personal way. He seemed playfully amused by our little group... and I liked not having to be squished out of my place... as I have experienced at other (albiet, enthusiastic crowd-filled)concerts.
'Shoplifters' was a very tear-inducing (again!) surprise. He put his heart into those Smiths songs, and for me... the night couldn't have been much better. I feel so fortunate to have been there!

  • Morrissey blessed SouthBend wednesday with an increadible show. I last saw him in 86'Queen is Dead tour at the Aragon Ballroom. (that night opened my eyes and I will never sleep again...) Sad to say, sometime after that I got on with my life/career after that and haven't seen him since... that is until someone from Ohio called me and told me he was going to be in SouthBend, thank you very much.
Morrissey amazes me, he was very talkative during the concert. It was so great to see Morrissey in my hometown. After so many years of listening to him over and over again during so many different times of my life, to see him live on stage without having to go to Chicago was great.
He asked the crowd what the last super trendy band that came to south bend was, the best anyone in the front could come up with was U2 who played at ND (Trendy?) Well Dave Mathews played here a while back also... (More trendy) but other than than we just don't get a lot of bands here, and NONE like Morrissey, because well there is no one who is like Morrissey.
