I've always thought that 'Alma' is some sort of embodiment of femininity and that the chorus lyrics are imploring others to (like Morrissey said in your quoted interview) "embrace [their] female...sides" as a way of accepting others - the 'someone, somewhere' line might link to the potential...

Did he play it that much live. I know he included it on the radio broadcasts from 2017, but he didn't seem to play it all that much. I could be wrong though. It would certainly translate better into a live setting, you're right.

I think that you can use more minimalistic arrangements to your benefit, but this one...there's something missing - maybe the clarity of the production cancels out the ramshackle vibe that it's going for? The humming parts are certainly nice - it's interesting having a different sort of vocal...

Now, I have a soft spot for Low In High School - I used to play it all the time when it came out, and still haven't got tired of a lot of it. Listening back to this track, it's clear that someone thought that some light relief in the middle of the dark, more abrasive sounds of the sandwiching...

For me, it might be the warm atmosphere of the keys and shimmering guitars in the chorus that really make it - the verses aren't really as strong, melodically, as these parts of the track.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s appalling...but I do think that 'Paris' is leagues better. I suppose the cadences and melody of the choruses are in the same ballpark, too.

Yes, I think so too. If it wasn’t for Jerry Finn’s production work, many of the songs could easily slot into Maladjusted.

Yes, he's become more of a barrel-chested crooner with a better range as of the last decade or so.

I think it has some interesting parts to it - the lyrical content, plus the vocals, as well as the small bits of electronic instrumentation at the start - but the tune is a basic Whyte progression, which, sadly, makes it just fade in nonchalantly to many of his other compositions. Still, not bad...

His voice has just gotten better and better over the years (of refusal).
