While a prisoner getting a biopic is nothing new, Phil Spector, the lord of the “wall of sound,” producer for everyone from The Ronettes to The Ramones, and a guest at California’s Corcoran State Prison serving a 19-year sentence for murdering Lana Clarkson, is getting the A-list treatment in the upcoming HBO film based on his intriguing life story. Portraying the musical legend/wig enthusiast will be none other than Hollywood icon Al Pacino. Hoo-ah!
According to the New York Times (via Spinner), the film, which is in development right now, will tell the story of Spector’s legendary rise and life leading up to the 70-year-old’s murder of Clarkson in 2003. Pulitzer Prize-winning writer David Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross) has been tapped to write the screenplay and direct, while Barry Levinson will act as executive producer. Hey, maybe they’ll put some of Rachelle Spector’s music on the soundtrack!
No word yet on a title or airdate, but stay tuned for more news as it’s announced.
