It depends on mainpage software Slash which might not be able to accommodate animated gifs.

Yes, animated banners are allowed, just need to watch the size of the file as it will affect the page load time. most mastheads are less than 20K in size.

The ones I made are only 18Kb

I tried with one (28 Kb) and it only works when opened (zoomed in), so if anyone wants to delete it, be my guest
