This is, the judges point out, “the first time an author from the distinguished Penguin Classics stable has made it onto the shortlist”.

“Eliza and Exra rolled together into the one giggling snowball of full-figured copulation,” one particularly energetic passage begins. It was always going to end badly: “Both fell awkwardly off the bed.”

“He is a very strong contender,” Frank Brinkley, one of the judges, said reverently.

BORING, not reading.

I've read much worse literary sex than was contained in List of the Lost. In the context of the novel, the sex scenes were OK. I'm sure they weren't intended to be deadly serious or actually arousing, and the oft-quoted 'bulbous salutations' is actually quite funny.

But then I'm sure that most people criticising the book haven't read it, and if they have, they've missed the point of it.

From the article, "This year the former Smiths frontman Morrissey has a chance of success, nominated for his first novel, List of the Lost, much mocked when it was published by Penguin Classics. This is, the judges point out, “the first time an author from the distinguished Penguin Classics stable has made it onto the shortlist”. So there's that :thumb:
