Three members of The Smiths reunite for Classically Smiths gigs reworking band's tracks with Camerata orchestra - Manchester Evening News
Classically Smiths will see Andy Rourke, Mike Joyce and Craig Gannon team up with the Manchester Camerata Orchestra to rework the band's back catalogue at live concerts this summer

Excerpt:

Guest vocalists for the Classically Smiths concerts are yet to be announced.

Andy Rourke said: “To have been there the first time round and seen it first hand, and to still be such a big fan of The Smiths today, I am both thrilled and excited to be involved in Classically Smiths.

"I’m really proud of the band’s work, and being able to present those songs again in this particular production format promises to be a real gift for audiences everywhere.”

Craig Gannon said: “Classically Smiths will be a refreshing and exciting production, not only for us as musicians, but ultimately for the people coming to see and hear it.

"I’m really looking forward to playing these great songs with an orchestra and I know people are going to embrace the way in which they are presented.

“When using an orchestra with a band, there are so many different approaches you can take. But rather than us bending something out of shape or forcing a completely different musical angle on it, we’re doing this with the greatest respect and admiration for the songs we all love.

“I played most of these songs live (and on some of the original recordings) when I was in The Smiths in 1986 and I’m really looking forward to revisiting them again.”

Classically Smiths is presented by Bad Production Ltd who are promising a huge production to back the music.

Joel Perry, executive producer and creative director, said: “Classically Smiths is bringing back into the now, from their extraordinary place in history, a reimagining of those irrepressible songs that we believe audiences, and indeed any discerning music lover, deserves to hear.

"Music that is as valid in 2018 as it was in 1987. Emotive, nostalgic, yet current and refreshed. A celebration of the melancholic exuberance that only that band were capable of providing, delivered in a production that is nothing short of monumental.

“We are not The Smiths, but we are certainly not to be missed by anyone whose lives were defined – and are still being defined – by the enduring sounds of one of the UK’s finest ever bands. This is the celebration of that.”

...Tickets for Classically Smiths go on sale Friday January 26 from www.ticketmaster.co.uk

The live dates confirmed so far are:

JUNE 28 – MANCHESTER, O2 APOLLO
JUNE 29 – LONDON, O2 ACADEMY, BRIXTON
JULY 2 – EDINBURGH, USHER HALL

Desperate for cash again, these three.
No high-profile singer is going to want to work with them.
I agree its the money, they will get someone to sing, won't be Moz though. In a way it cements the fact the Smiths will not be reforming, Mike & Co didn't consider the big money to be earned from a reunion in later life, they just wanted the cash back in 96, they got some, but nothing like what they would have by a reformation of the Smiths. Morrissey is the Smiths.

He tried it during the recordings of Ringleader and didn't like it.
I somehow doubt that he dislikes an orchestral sound, because he attempts to pull it off via keyboard quite often to mixed results.

If Marr were to be on board, this could be a reasonable thing. But the rhythm section? Get out of town.
Marr is the Smiths. Morrissey, as the sound of his music has proven for 30 years, is Morrissey.

He's never mentioned it, but maybe he doesn't like the possibility of real catgut strings.

Boy. This is going to cock up any real reunion with M&M in'it?

I disagree. I think it might actually make Steve and John keen to work together. They'll be a bit pissed off that the musicians who made virtually no contribution to the Smiths song-writing achievements will be grabbing all this limelight. It could prove to be a pivotal event in reuniting the pair...

"Morrissey sets animal rights record, makes plea for change with first cruelty free orchestra show."

"Beauty and art should not come with cruelty attached, says pop icon Morrissey."

Those would make better headlines than Hollywood bowl keeping the hotdogs in the freezer for a night,
and would garner positive press and I imagine quite a bit of public interest. Film it and show it on TV, or even as special events at cinemas followed by a DVD release. I'd pay $15-$20 to go see that.

Just been a piece on BBC news including a short interview with Joyce/Gannon, they said they had a list of guest singers - some very well known and some not so well known and they now have to hone that down.

Is it such a stretch to consider that had their paths not dovetailed when they did, that Morrissey would have sat daydreaming his life away, and still parked on his poor suffering mother's sofa to this day?

Musically, I've no doubt that Marr would have went on to acclaim. Morrissey with different music at the time could have been a disaster. (See a more wordy OMD) So yes, the sound of The Smiths- Marr. Because Morrissey carries on, and he is Morrissey, even when trying to approximate The Smiths.

Now I see what the previous no Andy comment was about which is interesting as it came I think before news broke. With Andy this event came off as ok fair enough but now it just seems odd and forced

"Listen here, you giblet faced leech. If it's money you want, it's money you'll have. How does 1 million pounds sound? Yes, that's all I'm willing to pa- Fine. 1.5 million, but that human stain Joyce had better not receive so much as a penny. No. I'm still not interested in reuniting. The check is in the mail. Goodbye."

Does Morrissey need to approve?
Well, presumably he has or it wouldn't be going ahead. But that's an interesting thought, Neal. Morrissey has been known to stubbornly block all sorts of things on a whim. Makes you wonder how on earth this has got the green light. Could it be that it actually has his tacit approval??
