Compelling Couplets

I came back to my old city with fierce determination
and I couldn't find my way out of the station.

I've had more than could be my rightful share
of nights I can't bear. How can it be fair?

It's so easy for us to sit together
but it's so hard for our hearts to combine.

Religions fall / children shelled.
"...children shelled? that's all very well,
but would you please keep the noise down low?"

It was only a test,
but she swam too far against the tide / she deserves all she gets.

He was just somebody's luckless son
But now look what he's done.

And now you've turned the last bend
and see how we're all judged the same at the end.

At one time the future did stretch out before me
But now it stretches behind.

Sweetie-pie, how I feel in my mind
and how I live in the world they are oceans apart.

I could've run loudly and proudly, all forcible entry
and morally bankrupt and never non-violent
and drawn to what scares me
and scared of what bores me

Then I was wrecked again
with the men full of bluff and ardour
from a well-known funeral parlour

****

I'm writing this to say
in a gentle way
Thank You - but no
I will live my life as I
will undoubtedly die - alone

****

Oh, you look so tired
mouth slack and wide
ill-housed and ill-advised
your face is as mean
as your life has been

****

But sometimes I'd feel more fulfilled
making Christmas cards with the mentally ill
I want to Live and I want to Love
I want to catch something that I might be ashamed of

****

Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
and as I climb into an empty bed
Oh well. Enough said.

"In the half-light
So English, frowning
Then at midnight, I
Can't get you out of my head"

'The cigarette butts must go'
'But', you protest
His lonely lips
Were pressed against them though..

"So if I see you and I tell you
How I've watched you
Don't make fun of me later
I'm just lost"

"They pull over in their Citroen vans
Not to shake your hand
With meths on their breaths
And you with youth on your side.."

Go to Soho, oh
Go to waste in the wrong arms
Still running round

Great choices, Jamie. I suddenly thought there should be something from Swallow. It was a toss-up between that one and:

I have been smashed again

Last night I felt
Real arms around me
No hope, no harm
Just another false alarm

But no more apologies
No more, no more apologies
Oh, I'm too tired
I'm so sick and tired
And I'm feeling very sick and ill today
But I'm still fond of you, oh-ho-oh

These lines are so brutally honest & typically Northern...

A crack on the head
Is what you get for not asking
And a crack on the head
Is what you get for asking

For those not aware, a 'crack' is the same as being physically punished, via being struck, or hit, usually meted out by an adult (parent mainly but also teachers) hand. I recall my father advising me when I was a child, on many occasions "If you carry on doing that, you'll get a crack"...back in the days when physically punishing a child was accepted as the norm. Nowadays you'd get reported to social services & have your kids taken into care. Oh happy days...

And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten-ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure - the privilege is mine

Surrender will I am before you

I am sick to death of life

See in me the side of you that sometimes makes you jump with fright

smiled with knife it’s you’re big night

(this song has nothing but good couplets)
