Dog on a Chain review in Record Collector - 2/5

For reasons best known to themselves, Record Collector got the world's #1 Morrissey-hating journalist to review the new album. David Quantocks, who I believe was even once sued by Morrissey and forced to write a grovelling apology, gives it 2/5. In all fairness, he does quote an appalling lyric about geese and a niece which I'm hoping he mis-heard or made up. Haven't bought the mag so can't scan and attach.

It has a lot of reach and power everywhere, not least in higher education where critical engagement starts and ends with nihilistic deconstructions of the very foundations we stand on, as human subjects. Morrissey’s significance now stretches way, way, beyond the limits of music; the man is a sage.

Camus cautioned that we should be particularly wary of slaves appealing for equality, as the reality is they want to wear the crown. The ‘snowflake’ generation are such thieves; you can’t spend 15 minutes with them without them straying onto the issue of people they’d like silenced, incarcerated or killed. If Hitler wasn’t exactly from the left, that’s certainly where his popular momentum (!) came from; who was it who mentioned this?

So true.

I was really worried for Morrissey at first, I thought at best I would be trying to say he wasn't all bad or he'd got confused in old age or something like that, but it's HELL on the UK left. Complete hell.

I have socialist friends who are getting accused of Islamophobia for talking reasonably about the grooming gangs, Islamist terrorism & even Brexit (as if Europe doesn't have racists).

& I've been talking to a friend today who has been left suicidal after being accused of transphobia & piled-on by activists & trade unionists. She's been thrown out of groups, is likely to lose her job & isn't welcome at left-wing events. All for saying out loud things I know most of them agree with. She really cares about all vulnerable people & it's killing her.

Morrissey has gone off at an extreme because that's what he does - but he should come back & find the disillusioned left, because we're becoming legion. And we can help.

It's funny that Moz has ended up at the centre of so many things I'm having to deal with in my work. Thinking about his situation, has been useful for clarifying my own.

I’ve just had a look online to look for any new album reviews and there’s more articles about his shopping trip than about the album.

yeah I’m thinking that they’re being held off until album release week. I’m guessing they’re gonna release another song at the same time. Maybe Jim Jim falls if what people have been saying about it holds true. I was surprised to see knockabout world released so soon after love is

I think web-based reviewers were asked to hold back releasing their reviews until mid March (it seems Fiona D was, at least). The theory was probably that Knockabout World would be all over the radio at the mo and people would buy the album as a result, even if reviews were poor (anticipated by record company due to negativity towards M's continued support of the far right). The reverse seems to have happened if the few reviews published to date are typical. Zero airplay for the songs, but surprisingly good reviews which might have built up some more demand for the album, had they been released sufficiently early...

I think 4 songs prerelease might be a bit much, especially for an 11 track album, but you may be right. It will be interesting to see if he sings anything new (unheard) at the Leeds gig.

yeah if he was gonna do an unheard song the next single if the word applies anymore would be a good choice as it would spread a bit beforehand on its own. It just makes sense these days in his position to release the new song and reviews right at the moment when you want attention and are actually able to sell something. Especially if you want that somethings first weeks sales to be the best you can get. I didn’t think they’d release a new one til release time but maybe they were still hoping for some radio play and just put out another song as a continued attempt. Personally I don’t think it’s to good an idea to release so many songs so close together but what do I know

...yet another tossy journalist wanting their 5 minutes of attention.
Move on folks, theres nothing to see...
