Essential Boots

Here's a thread for new ups of essential bootlegs...for new fans or for people whose hard drives died.

Other than maybe a compilation here or there, I didn't come up with ANY of this shit the first time around; all of this stuff was originally leaked and posted by other people and they've been given credit in instances where I know/remember who they are.

Most of these are in 320 or 256; I've linked to Smithstorrents for source credits and FLAC versions when possible.

This is a work in progress; I'll be adding to it soon but if anybody else wants to help, that would be appreciated.

OK here we go:

Some of these songs have appeared on catalog reissues; the versions here are pre-release/unmastered and you may notice a slightly different sonic quality that may be of interest.

Here are boots of the FM broadcast from the Kilburn show, a soundboard rip which is very similar and has the same tracklist (these omit some songs that made the record but include others which did not), and an OK sounding audience recording of the whole show.

I have no idea who is responsible originally for all of these recordings but I've linked to as many source/information sites as possible.

Here is one upload of two combined short Morrissey outtake collections that have been around for awhile; one dating from the 1988 Viva Hate sessions and the other hailing primarily from the 1993 Vauxhall sessions but including two tracks from the Bona Drag era from several years prior.

All tracks here are unmastered and I have combined both collections into one amalgam; assembled chronologically. Those interested in the original FLAC uploads/original filenames should note these Smithstorrents links:

The download link is fixed. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

And I'm glad you appreciate the uploads but twice in responding to this thread you have felt the need to embed all of the original post's content, which is f***ing absurd.

So this is a show that, despite the date/venue listed on the bootleg art, is actually from the date/location listed above. It's one of the best Smiths bootlegs around and is commonly known as Thank Your Lucky Stars, which according to the info linked to below is where the erroneous source info comes from.

I do not know if LIVLWYL is the exact same thing as TYLS, or if there are any differences or what. It sounds the same to me as I remember TYLS, which I am currently re-downloading TYLS from Soulseek as apparently I no longer have it. When it comes in, if it's different from this one I will post it but I have a feeling it's the same.

There is also, I guess, a fairly recent fan remaster of this boot. It's pretty amazing and I just played it and I think it's the definitive interpretation:

The Smithstorrent link to the Fiat remaster is here.
The mp3 conversion is here.

Anyway, here is Life Is Very Long When You're Lonely and (probably) Thank Your Lucky Stars.

Solo Versions Of Smiths Songs

here's a comp I put together awhile back of the best version (in my opinion) of every Smiths song Morrissey has performed live. Lots of different sources; quality is soundboard where possible. Some songs appear twice when arrangements are significantly different. Many thanks to all the original uploaders of the tracks. The set was updated recently to include Asleep from the last tour (thanks to !Viva Hate! for that.)

OK so there have been a trillion versions of this over the years. If you don't know what it is, it's the sessions The Smiths did with Troy Tate as producer for their first LP, before the recordings were scrapped and they started over with John porter.

Far, far superior attempts at these songs in pretty much everyone's opinion.

Basically three major increments have leaked since the early 90s...I won't attempt to break them all down; I've linked to places below where people explain it much more lucidly than I ever could. What I have done is correlate the different sets into one place, and here is that effort below.

Sincere thanks to 'Skylarker' for making these available/re-advertising to new recruits that this extraordinary unofficial archive exists. Whoever owns the rights to these songs is sitting on an absolute gold-mine. I'm surprised the rights owners of these performances hasn't contacted 'Skylarker' to make this into a fully-fledged multi-CD/DVD/*coffee-table* eye-candy Smiths-Porn book along the lines of 'Peepholism'. No doubt Morrissey's Legal Eagles would pounce if anyone tried to monetize this amazing archive work as it would provide a retirement income for Mike Joyce. Morrissey should just sing 'Let It Go' and celebrate what he achieved as part of The Smiths Collective rather than die a bitter, angry fool rightly dismissed as 'devious, truculent and unreliable' with regard to the contractual spats over these works.

This is the best site about popular music and 'fan culture' on the Interwebz. This thread is one reason why. Again, many thanks to 'Skylarker' and 'Viva Hate', and of course, to DavidT for not being bullied or bribed into submission. After the Glastonbury blast about Eavis, I can suddenly stop wincing when listening to all this. I'm looking forward to savouring these alternative takes on my morning run or other activities whilst in Boot Camp. Fantastic stuff.

You are right BB, but make sure to take that advice self. Your posts are often filled by needless nonsens that clogs up threads

You said you were leaving. Please don't disappoint. And stop trying to raise your profile by addressing my throne. I gave you simple technical advice. End of.

Alright, girls. That's enough. Take it outside if you can't get along.

Anyway...here's Viva's excellent audio rip of the 25 Live DVD.
