IF The Smiths did reform, what kind of reunion would/should it be?

Kuiper

Better than Marr
Let's set aside SHOULD The Smiths get back together and whether or not they will, let's discuss what would happen if they already had agreed to. We've all heard the multi-million dollar offers of a world tour, but let's set aside why they reunited and who made them and for what purpose, just they did, and now it's time to wonder what would happen. It's up to you to decide whether to respond in the form of what you predict would happen or what you would like to happen.

I am bad at making polls, I always forget an obvious option or two and add too many pointless ones, so I'm not taking that responsibility! :p Just here, some possibilities I can think of:
Just one show, for charity or something
A world tour consisting of old, original material
A world tour consisting of Smiths songs plus some Morrissey solo songs
A world tour consist of Smiths songs plus Morrissey solo work and some songs from Marr's various projects
A world tour featuring Morrissey, Marr, and Morrissey's current band behind them?
A world tour featuring Morrissey, Marr, Rourke, and some other drummer replacing Joyce?
A world tour consisting of old, original material then new material written for an album
A world tour promoting an album of new material
No touring, just a one-time reunion/farewell Smiths album
Permanent reunion with consistent touring and new albums

I think if they did reform it would be just Morrissey and Marr, because if Joyce is to be excluded Rourke might be swept aside too. The backing band will probably not be anyone who has worked with Moz solo, as Marr might take that as some offense that his career post-Smiths hasn't been as important or something. The tour would probably be shorter than expected, and the shows as well, consisting of pretty much 16 Smiths classics and not much variety. Marr might enjoy it but Morrissey probably seems un-enthused but delivers a decent performance. Ticket sales are high but fans are disappointed, even if they still absolutely must go. Morrissey gets a bit more interest in his solo career but loses a little respect. He returns to his fantastic solo career as good as he ever has been, and Marr becomes more obscure than he was before the reunion.

Morrissey and Marr, like Page and Plant. That is the only way it might work. There will never be a reunion of the entire old group.

as long as they dont do a bands reunited on vh1 i will be happy i would like to have morrissey say i have forgiven all that has happened and i want to reform the smiths.

I'd settle for an all-four jam session in my living room.

I've tried to book Moz, Boz, and Matt for a quiet, acoustic, five-night salon stand in my living room- apparently he doesn't do small gigs like that. ;)

Seriously- I would like to hear three new songs written by Morrissey and Marr. That's it. Nobody is 22 anymore, the old stuff was of-the-moment and there is no possible way anyone would be happy with the fruits of an all-out collaboration.

Morrissey Marr... Morrissey may be talked into Rourke but no Joyce...

Backing band would be handpicked by Marr if not Rourke and Joyce.

To make sure they do not find themselves in court they would advertise themselves as Morrissey and Marr...

All material would be Smiths material as the Police are doing.... Sting is singing police songs and nothing from the solo career.

That's an interesting angle that I didn't think of. I imagine the marquis saying something like

Morrissey and Marr
playing the music of
The Smiths
Live

IF they DID reform, I would want the complete old band including Craig Gannon.

But I don't think it would work. It's like a couple trying to get together some twenty years after their divorce, they have grown apart too much to get it on again. I'm afraid it would ruin our good memories of The Smiths and leave a bitter aftertaste. Some things should better stay dead.

at least not a 2 year, over 100 gigs stadium tour

just about 50 gigs, indoors, UK 20 [incl scot/ireland] europe 10 USA 20

Morrissey Marr Rourke Joyce and Boz or Alain as 2nd guitarist [no Gannon]

maybe include another 20 or 25 gigs at maximum, [a few gigs in south America, Japan, Australia and Madagascar]

it must become a collectors has been show

ofcourse a few shows will be taped to release a live album, DVD extra repackage and shoplifter bag...damn where me yellow pills

edit;
they record and release a new album before the world whore tour

If The Smiths reunite, all the 4 members should take part and play only the Smiths songs, but this seems very unlikely.
Morrissey and Marr seems more likely to happen (No Morrissey's band) and they could write a handful of songs.

Marr might enjoy it but Morrissey probably seems un-enthused but delivers a decent performance.
No way he does it without enjoying it. They must be friends and happy to do that.
Marr becomes more obscure than he was before the reunion.
Can't see that happening. There's Modest Mouse now, who gave him a little bit of fame again.

In the incredibly unlikely event they ever did get back together I'd really only be interested in Morrissey/Marr doing some NEW studio songs, not going out on some grubby 'Greatest Hits' tour to make a fast buck.

As it is I think people's best chance is a post-death reunion, a la the Beatles, with Morrissey in his 80's suddenly deciding to add vocals to some unreleased instrumental recording, or 'Oscillate WIldly' or something! ;)

1 show only, in my back yard. You are all invited (for pool and BBQ) :)

A world tour of old, original material w/Moz, Marr, and Morrissey's current band behind them. One can dream.

It WOULD happen a couple of hours before the end of the world, when everyone has realised that all human life, complete with every emotion is an exercise in futility, therefore Morrissey has decided he will play a gig, so he and his family, friends, fans and enemies can go down together. After he has played a set with his current band (making sure he includes 'Sorrow Will Come In The End'), Marr, Rourke and Joyce will replace them on stage (possibly they will have been 'escorted' there by Morrissey's underworld contacts). Thus, a seething set full of tension will ensue, with bitter sneers from Morrissey directed to all, but especially towards the man behind the drum kit (Morrissey won't let a little incident like the imminent end of mankind totally eclipse his hatred, obviously) There will probably be a smile or two between him and Johnny as the gig progresses and they remember the past. They will play 'requests', but end with 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out'. After which, the sun will begin engulfing the Earth and Morrissey's voice will be heard above the weeping and gnashing of teeth, reciting John Betjeman's 'A Child Ill.'

I don't think I'd want it to happen any other way.

The Smiths can never happen again in any way, shape or form.

I would rather that Morrissey and Marr put aside their differences and work on cleaning up and releasing some of the good video footage of their old live gigs so we can see The Smiths in their prime. A concert DVD of twenty-year old material is as close as we'll get, and in any case that's as close as I want them to get.

Given that this is hypothetical (for now) this is where I stand.

All four Smiths live on tour - I'm in
Morrissey and Marr + others - I'm out

Absurbity at it's best! :D
