Is Coronavirus as serious as they say?

A police state is not racist police officers being brutal.

My university professor Uncle is not living in terror of being arrested, disappeared or otherwise mistreated by the New Zealand government using the police to enforce its arbitrary power.

If you're in favour of socialist immigration - my Grandpa wanted an International Workers Republic - then immigration is besides the point - it's the flow of money & supply chains that matter.
Your professor Uncle knows which side his bread is buttered. I wouldn’t expect him to be living in fear. Dissidents don’t generally get professor roles.

You posted Covid death statistics from Jan 3 to Jan 19 sating they were “grim”.

Turns out these were the figures for the entire pandemic, so somewhat misleading.

If that was supposed to be more proof that Sweden has more deaths than its neighbours, we already knew that; nobody is saying anything else. However, you won’t accept any of the explanations as to why that is (and what you tend to forget is that Norway and Finland don’t have lockdowns either) - the only reply you will accept is that we didn’t lock down hard enough, fast enough, long enough. If this is your outlook, then have it and be happy with it. In the meantime, I can honestly say I am extremely glad I chose to settle down in Sweden, and so are my elderly parents.

They're only grim to you if they're for January?

You haven't posted any evidence that shows Sweden is doing something that isn't staying home & keeping social distance that's improved your death rate or your economy.

If you're happy you moved there, that's great, but it's not a reason for another country to follow Sweden's example.

What dissident activities would lead someone to be living in terror of the New Zealand government?

Claiming indigenous rights.

There might be arguments, protests & court cases - but are you saying they disappear, they're killed, jailed for political reasons, get denied work, have to flee the country, that no one dares speak up about it... all the things that characterise a police state?

Activists were killed.

And guess what: everyone is a lot more agreeable these days.

They're really not. They're as vocal about injustice as any other democracy.

They had a Black Lives Matter protest with all the same fair points & hyperbole.

That's not a police state, it's not people being afraid to speak out because their government will destroy them. It's bad policing.
There’s a lot of ‘bad policing’ in the world. It’s almost as if it’s normal.

Well yes, it makes a bit of a difference to the discussion if there are 10 000 dead from a virus in two weeks or in a year...

You criticize Sweden’s no-lockdown strategy while at the same time maintaining that Sweden does, in fact, have a lockdown, because a voluntary lockdown is a lockdown, too ...

And all we do is stay at home and keep social distance, but shame on us because nOrWaY... ???

What point are you really trying to make?

That's Madeleine Grant's opinion.

The Telegraph took a sceptical stance & got pulled up for publishing misleading information.

Yes. The Telegraph has been slapped down. Anyone not towing the line is being slapped down.

Morrissey is being slapped down.

The Corbyn brothers are being slapped down.

And yet, oppression is nowhere.

If only people said the right things, then they’d discover how free they really are.

And all we do is stay at home and keep social distance anyway, but shame on us because nOrWaY.

The only difference is, I assume, you'd take it more seriously.

The point I'm making is that lockdown measures work - & that Sweden has had to impose more restrictions because leaving it as voluntary guidance wasn't enough.

It will never be enough. Lockdowns run counter to the best of mankind, and appeal to its worst aspects: the frustrated desire to restrict, limit, oppress and control. It’s no more than curtain twitching realised at state level.

They printed misinformation. They're not being shut down.

Morrissey got a kicking because journalists will print crap & social media is even worse for accuracy.

Piers is a wingnut putting public health in danger, but still gets to pad around making money out of it. Jeremy is still an MP.

We're not going to be in lockdown for the rest of eternity. The government would get fed up with theatre people badgering them for a start.

We're whinging every day.
