Letter from Faber editor re: autobiography

I've been on these forums for almost 10 years and never read the word ''contrary'' before. Now I have read it twice in two days. The above quote and being called 'contrary' by Scarlet Ibis yesterday.
I wonder which household has been using their dictionary:rolleyes:

I've been on these forums for about 2 weeks now and I can neither agree or disagree with your point.
So don't ask me why I'm typing this.

Well, if Morrissey is contrary, then you're in excellent company. :)

Me, I've always considered myself to have an average knowledge of medicine, vocabulary / regular English, etc. Basically I just use Google and what I learned in school. (My third grader's vocabulary list at her public school already includes words like "pleasant," "succeed," "compete," so "contrary" is probably a third or fourth-grade level word.) But with people comparing me to doctors and accusing me of the crime of using a dictionary... well, I have to take it as a compliment!

Oh, sorry, big word, here's a link:

This was discussed on Sunday's 'Open Book' on BBC Radio4. No new info, just a rather snooty general gab on the lengths some publishers are now going to in order to snare authors.
Programme site is here http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00qm62m If you 'listen again' it's at 14m40s.
