Madness stars still angry over Morrissey gig walkout - Daily Express

MADNESS stars GRAHAM 'SUGGS' MCPHERSON and CHRIS FOREMAN are still annoyed singer MORRISSEY walked out of their 1992 reunion shows because the incident cast a shadow over the band's comeback.

The former The Smiths frontman was invited to perform on the bill at the two-day 'Madstock!' event in London but he cut short his first set when he was pelted with bottles and coins by the crowd, and he subsequently pulled out of his second slot the following day.

In the days following the concerts, media coverage was dominated by speculation about Morrissey's cancellation and some members of Madness are still upset that the incident cast a cloud over their hotly-anticipated reunion, six years after they split.

When asked if Morrissey's walkout ruined the event, frontman McPherson tells Q magazine, "Not as much as he hoped it would!"

Guitarist Foreman adds, "It was a shame because it was a really big thing for us."

When people rightfully criticize you, you could actually consider what they're saying and change something about your behaviour, instead of telling them to f*** off. Really, a lot of your behaviour is inexcusable. And no, you can't change that by telling me to f*** off.

Yes I mean, it's terrible when that happens, isn't it?

See this is the type of behaviour of someone you criticize yet you indulge in exactly the same vernacular. Pot? Kettle?

I was drawing attention to his use of naughty words, you mentally unspectacular cretin, not criticising - can you point out where I deprecated the use of naughty words, rather than point them out. You'd praise Morrissey for stating black is white if it suited your blinkered agenda.

And you criticize me while praising the chap responsible. Pot, kettle? Oh, and f*** off.

Haha, you've got to love this site. Journalist blows a comment about something that happened a couple of decades ago out of all proportion - what's new? - and it somehow turns into a full scale fight. Back on topic, it reads, were upset, not still upset.

is it right that moderators can tell website user folks to f*** off?

Really!

I find it funny that you think that what you do on this site is somehow comparable to what Morrissey has done and is continuing to do. Sad. Little. Men. Oh, and that's the mods I'm talking about. Cue insult. Sad sacks!

Who cares? If a moderator has something to communicate about 'moderation' that's fine. If they wish to express a personal opinion as a comment, separate to their role as a moderator, that's also fine. Aren't you aware of the difference?

On one level this is 'only' a web site about a minor pop star, but on another it's 'quite important'. Just try expressing your Freedom Of Speech on The Guardian or The Telegraph and see what the 'moderators' get up to there!!

Rubbish. That old "Morrissey is nasty so why can't I be nasty too" argument would only be valid if Morrissey slagged off Nico while stating that he likes her earlier stuff. It's not rocket science man.

I seem to remember Morrissey making some unkind comments about David Bowie's artistic output whilst stating he likes the earlier stuff. And about Lou Reed, but then Lou died. And Morrissey cried. Real tears. *sigh*

Madness are rubbish, Two Tone band wagon jumpers who played karaoke ska for 5th Form faux skinheads in Last Resort T-Shirts. Now they are a national institution … go figure. They never stepped up to the plate to stop Fascists attending their gigs, simply sat on the fence and road the wave to the Top Forty. I can't believe Morrissey was enamored with these guys …

I saw The Specials at Wolves Civic last week with Steve Craddock on guitar. It was blistering. ..... I love their stuff but you're right, they never dealt with the Fascists and ended up singing at Buckingham Palace. Morrissey was presumably at some of those early gigs hidden under a hat, taking notes, planning/hoping to attract the skinheads to his shows wearing nail-varnish or some such nonsense. Then he got his come-uppance at Finsbury Park. Awesome! I was living in Walthamstow at the time and E17 were in a house down the road with loads of teenage girls screaming all day. Camden was already a tourist dump. Nice to see Cathal's been 'on a journey' since those days. A lot has changed, it's now 'Emirates', etc, but it's great when people push their comfort zone:

"The range of diverse interests he pursued -through martial
arts, esoteric fraternities, Buddhism, a long held love of literature
and wisdom teachings - were outward manifestations of an inner
restlessness. In 1993 Morrissey, friend and confidante, had urged Cathal
to take an initiative. One morning amongst his post, he found his
Mozness had sent his album Your Arsenal and there written across its
cover in bold blue crayon were the words 'be brave, be bold, be a man.
It's a great game." Encouraging sentiments yet Smyth was anything but
confident in his ability to go it alone."

I read this Madness/Morrissey story a few days ago, although I was more interested in the article that I spotted on the sidebar about the "defecating dwarf" from Hull.
http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/539495/dwarf-neighbours-misery-asbo

The first person to leave a comment had this to say: "People like this give credibility to Nazi Germany's T4 programme."
Which was a moderate comment for that person I'm guessing, because I get the feeling that they were restraining themselves.

While I don't know much about the newspaper/site in question, it seems to be only slightly more sophisticated than morrissey-solo.com.
It's a pity we can't invite the "defecating dwarf" here to give his opinions on Morrissey.

The article says he "loves to go off into town in his wheelchair and harass people", so he obviously has a sense of mischief and would be likely to fit in around here.

There is probably some added depth to him. The double-barrelled surname suggests a privileged upbringing, but that could be misleading. He looks just like John Lydon. Alexander Pope was only 4'something in height as well, so perhaps he could surprise us with some poetic flourishes, or maybe not.

He seems to have a constitution more similar to John Wilmot's than to Pope's. Still, if Mozza220559 knows him personally, or if anybody else has any idea of how to get in touch with him, then they might send an invite his way.

I'm just trying to come up with a few original ideas to improve this website. That was one of my better ideas so far, and I welcome any feedback. Send it to my PM.

Madness were an early favourite of mine, I had the VHS tape with all the music videos, which I watched a couple of times every week. I have some of the vinyl too. No other pop band ever created such unique music videos, as far as I'm concerned.

Imagine the impression that "Grey Day", "(Waiting for) the Ghost Train", "House of Fun", "Shut Up", "One Step Beyond" and others left on a young mind.

Can't you see the impression that they left? Come to your own conclusions.

You got him there. Touche.

There's a difference between criticism and abuse. The fact you don't differentiate is the reason this site is seen as a place of hate.

you guys are a trip, to post the above after all the hate and abuse posted against skinny.

Not sure if anyone here has already seen or have mentioned this. Cathal Smyth aka Chas Smash from Madness recently put out a solo album. On his website http://www.cathalsmyth.co.uk/ he put a nice story of Moz encouraging him to go solo in 1993.

Hmmm. The members of Madness should really only blame the audience (their audience) who booed Morrissey and threw stuff at him. I was there and I can tell you it was bloody awful wanting to see and hear Morrissey surrounded by aggressive, impatient, drunk, thuggish, racist, homophobic Madness 'fans'. Reading between the lines, maybe Madness did tell the reporter that they were angry Morrissey didn't come back (to be booed and pelted) on the second day of their comeback, but they actually blame the audience. The reporter would have no interest in that. The rowdy crowd cast the shadow over the Madness reformation and knocked them off the front pages.

I quoted it 3 hours before you posted this comment. The 'nice story' is as follows:

Amusing to read the move from 1993 to 2014 whereby 'be brave, be bold, be a man' becomes 'I'm not a man'. Perhaps Morrissey got tired of his Suedehead/Skinhead North London Your Arsenal fixations. Grotesque food options at the 'Emirates', it has to be said. I shall be there in 24 hours, forlornly hoping for something more than sub-par tactics and moronic chants.

Nonsense. Morrissey was trolling Madness, their minority knucklehead fan element and, of course, the NME. Mind you that was a win-win for Moz/NME as he got the front page, not Madness, and they got their faux-racist outrage ventilation about Morrissey. You can't seriously suggest that Morrissey didn't realise that cavorting around the stage in a gold lame bomber jacket with the Butcher's Apron wrapped around him wouldn't antagonise 'the lads' who followed Madness and the gormless Socialist Worker hacks who controlled the NME at that time? It's almost as if you're saying a section of Madness fans are, I dunno, a 'sub-species' with your claim that their reaction to Morrissey was 'racist'. But we're all bored of that trolling by Moz. He's trolling CANCER now...he just can't stop trolling, maybe it's his substitute for sex...

It would be amusing to see Morrissey slithering across the stage in Dublin with the Union Jack like wot he did in Finsbury Park. Might provoke an amusing response! Still, he's pretty promiscuous with flags, what with wearing Argentine colours for a few column inches, so nobody should take his professed allegiance to either the UK or The Republic Of Ireland remotely seriously. He should properly be holding aloft the flag of whatever country he is domiciled in for Tax purposes, presumably Switzerland. I doubt he pays circa 60% taxes to Socialist Sweden.

Madness should have spotted the chancer before he used them as a prop for his 'skinheads with nail varnish' phase. He even tried to nick their sound with Langer & Winstanley. But that didn't end well. LOLz!

I didn't post any hate and abuse towards Skinny. As a moderator though he should understand that he sets the tone.
