Morrissey Owes Us Nothing

Fiona

Love Morrissey ♥
After scanning some of the discussions (and arguments) on the forums, it really struck me that it seems that much of the fans irritation and anger seems to stem from disappointment. Disappointment in Morrissey for not matching up to our ideals, hopes and expectations. If it's not about his latest musical release, it's his diet and vegetarianism. If it's not about his ill health, it's about our frustration at his lack of public confirmation.

Obviously, we are all fans, therefore we are interested, curious and passionate. We want to know it all. We are only human and we are bound to have hopes and investment in our favorite artist.

But Morrissey as a human being does not belong to us. He is not ours to condemn. His music is his gift to the fans, his interviews are glimpses into his psyche, but beyond that we do not really have a right to be contemptuous of his lifestyle, choices and actions.

I am a vegan, and I thank Morrissey for educating his fans on animal rights, but I am in no place to sit in judgement of what does (or does not!) pass his lips...It's his choice, his own ethics that he abides by, not mine. Not ours. You may call him a hypocrite, but you do not know the truth with certainty. And to an extent we are all hypocrites...to be human is to be flawed, I'm afraid.

I think it is probably healthy to be reminded that artists, while public figures, are not public property.
If somehow you, or we, feel failed by Morrissey, then I believe the fault lies with us-for having thrown him atop our metaphorical pedestal and claimed him as our representative. Morrissey never promised us anything, and all we have to own is the music. Music that makes him a very wonderful, powerful being.

In the past I have called Morrissey my hero. In a sense it's true: He has impacted my life in such a positive and powerful way, I will always have so much love and respect for Morrissey. But the moment I catch myself slandering his name because I believe he fails me or my ideals, I will ask you all to remind me of this thread.

What nonsense. Morrissey feels perfectly entitled to be contemptuous of other people's lifestyles, even going so far as to brand their diet choices 'murder', whilst ignoring his own complicity in animal slaughter to provide his cheese and leather shoes. Therefore he is in no place to sit in judgement on what passes anybody else's lips.

If you think his singing makes him a 'very wonderful, powerful human being', then you have very low ethical standards. And I very much doubt you are a vegan.

Re: Morrissey Owes Us Nothing.

I assure you I am a vegan. I just don't want to spread hateful energy because Morissey MAY not be one.

And yes, I do admit to believing that an artist who has accomplished amazing things with his talent, and has bought happiness to fans the world over, for many years, is wonderful.

But if you genuinely don't see anything amazing and/or powerful in his music, and you think that as an individual he is a hypocrite and simply awful, what draws you to fan forums? And I ask this with no sarcasm or mocking whatsoever. I am genuinely interested to know. Because if I felt that offended by any singer, writer or celebrity, I'd run a mile, not devote time to them.

Re: Morrissey Owes Us Nothing.

I'm fairly sure from a number of interviews I've read that he is a vegan, such as this one with PETA in which he says 'It took me a long time to give up eggs, but I managed it' :http://www.globalanimal.org/2012/04/26/morrissey-reminds-us-that-meat-is-murder/ Also I'm fairly sure he doesn't wear leather, in an interview he did with Russell Brand he refuses to sit on Russell's leather seats https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GB5cGosBIHY . Anyway, even if he isn't completely vegan (which I'm fairly sure he is), angry meat eating morrissey fans are always trying to find some reason to put him down for his beliefs that he clearly cares about deeply, because they are torn between the art that they love and the artist they loathe. Or maybe they're just a load of c***s who you should pay no attention to.

Re: Morrissey Owes Us Nothing.

Thank you, Matt, for your reply and the links. I believe Morrissey very well could be vegan. And he has been a blessing to educating people the world over on animal rights.

What draws me to this forum? The same thing that draws me to online poker/porn/news or Solitaire: boredom. I'm not 'offended' by Morrissey, I just think he's ridiculous. There's a difference. As for anyone spreading 'hateful energy', erm....Viva Hate? *rollseyes* Implicit in your comment about not wishing to spread 'hateful energy' towards Morrissey if he's not a vegan is an understanding that he transmits 'hateful energy' each and every time he sings 'Meat Is Murder'. And transmits hypocrisy. I'm genuinely interested in how you think you can square that circle. *smirks*

I love the way you just give up trying to argue at the end and transmit what 'Fiona' would call 'hateful energy' by calling folk 'c***s'. LOL!
He isn't vegan. He eats cheese. Deal with the hypocrisy and the fact that it's not just 'angry meat eating morrissey fans' who've had enough of his cant .

He is not a vegan. He eats cheese and wears leather shoes. Just like I do. Sorry to puncture your balloon.

i think this is also important to note, morrissey is friends with a person who owns leather seats. damon could drink milk from cows and probably will be in the dressing room with him to consume it while he, morrissey, drinks the rice milk which would solve the important mystery we devote our time to. sacrifice determines value and our time is valuable so the more time we spend on it, this subject, the more we reveal it and hikm to be of importance to us. nichomachean ethics taught me that

Considering Damon disappeared after Dublin, we are now back where we started.

Re: Morrissey Owes Us Nothing.

Brummie Boy, are you ever going to let a thread pass without dropping your half-penneth worth in as 'fact'? Let me know when it happens, we might actually get an enjoyable discussion, instead of a series of hateful rants.

Re: Morrissey Owes Us Nothing.

Just realised how great this board looks when you use certain functions. As a fan, I am totally up for debate on issues but really don't want to chase myself into circles arguing with someone who openly admits to slaying Morrissey due to "boredom."

Anyway I've ultimately said all I need to. I still stick by what I've said: I believe it is negative to continually slate a person or artist based on things we do not even know for certain.

I have a great deal of respect for him and his music and I'm comfortable with accepting that my favorite singer is not perfect, is only human, and that the only person he has to live with-and live up to-is himself.

Artists are not one dimensional beings. It's far too easy to select one thing we dislike about them and then magnify that to make it the sum total of who they are. Morrissey is more than his diet choices, and I'm happy to enjoy his words, music, performances and take the positive from what he offers as a public figure. Maybe that's just me, but I've never been one to soak up resentment.

Re: Morrissey Owes Us Nothing.

This, times a squillion. You've put it perfectly.

I have admitted no such thing. Isn't it rather absurd to accuse me of 'slaying' Morrissey simply by pointing out his contradictions. Your vapid 'positivity' would be fine if only for the fact that Morrissey is an absolute sponge soaking up resentment about everything and everyone who peeves him.

I do hope you've found the 'Ignore' button and I will not have to bother myself responding to any more of your insipid remarks.

Only if it's a 'positive' thought about how wonderful Morrissey is and how lucky she is to have found him. Etc.

Viva Hate!

Since when did I need your permission to post a comment on a thread? Or anyone else's permission? The entirely vapid, insipid threads created by 'Fiona' are like a badly managed PR account for Morrissey. Like 'Fiona', you have the option to put me on 'Ignore', thereby never seeing the barbs and snarks I fire at ridiculous threads such as these. Morrissey owes us nothing. I owe him nothing. And I certainly owe you and Fiona nothing. Are we clear on that? Good.
