"Norway frowns on Morrissey's presence in Nobel concert" - AFP / Yahoo News

Oslo (AFP) - Former Smiths frontman Morrissey caused a stir in Norway on Wednesday after the British singer -- reviled in the country for his provocative comments in the wake of its 2011 Utoeya island massacre -- was confirmed for a Nobel concert line-up in Oslo next month.

"The right man for the Nobel concert?" asked Norway's main newspaper Afterposten on its front page.

This choice "is strikingly out of tune," wrote one of its commentators.

Nordic Twitter users piled on, branding as "bizarre" and "sad" Morrissey's inclusion in the December 11 concert, which was dedicated to the 2013 Peace prize being awarded to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

Morrissey is notorious in Norway for remarks he made during a concert in Poland just two days after the July 22, 2011 massacre of 77 people -- most of them teenagers -- on Norway's Utoeya island by a right-wing extremist, Anders Behring Breivik. He controversially compared the victims' fate to that of animals bred for fast-food companies.

"That is nothing compared to what happens in McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried Shit every day," he said, furthering his reputation as an outspoken vegetarian.

The organisers of the Nobel concert ruled out cancelling Morrissey's participation.

While his remarks over the massacre were "hideous", producer Odd Arvid Stroemstad said, "his explanation was convincing enough not to deny him the right to pay tribute to the Nobel laureate".

"When the artists go on stage, they do it for just one good reason," Stroemstad told AFP.

"Some are to the left, some are to the right, but all of them perform for free to support the Nobel Peace Prize and its laureate."

As well as Morrissey, the December concert features British singer James Blunt and Syrian musician Omar Souleyman, and will be hosted by Hollywood acting star Claire Danes, known for her leading role in the TV series "Homeland".

Statement by Benny-the-Butcher ----- Morrissey solo (Hateful online crèche)

Norway this is your time to shine and your moment to make history and amends by giving Morrissey a taste of his own medicine when he walks on stage for his comments regarding human massacre on your soil as nothing compared to what goes on at famous fast food chain outlets.
Let your voices be heard for the world to hear that stupid crass irresponsible comments will not be tolerated.
Who in their right mind booked him for this gig in the first place ?
Give him hell.

God save the Queen

You can find his statement online, genius.

MORRISSEY STATEMENT

The recent killings in Norway were horrific. As usual in such cases, the media give the killer exactly what he wants: worldwide fame. We aren't told the names of the people who were killed - almost as if they are not considered to be important enough, yet the media frenzy to turn the killer into a Jack The Ripper star is .... repulsive. He should be un-named, not photographed, and quietly led away.
The comment I made onstage at Warsaw could be further explained this way: Millions of beings are routinely murdered every single day in order to fund profits for McDonalds and KFCruelty, but because these murders are protected by laws, we are asked to feel indifferent about the killings, and to not even dare question them.
If you quite rightly feel horrified at the Norway killings, then it surely naturally follows that you feel horror at the murder of ANY innocent being. You cannot ignore animal suffering simply because animals "are not us."

That was not what I was asking. Wanted to know if the producer's quote was translated incorrectly.

You are one snooty ass!

It's out of context. From the interview with the impresario, it is clear he was approached as their choice. Naturally enough. This isn't the kind of event you sign up for.

Link please?

What does Morrissey have to do with world PEACE? It's like buying a swimming pool on a drug store or asking Jesse Tobias to write a beautiful tune. I'm glad people reacted against him being there.

Was his quote a matter of being lost in translation then?

I don't think so. I think it was an incorrect interpretation in the reading that led to the assumption he was asked. I personally didn't read it that way at all.

Bet this will somehow lead to him canceling and my ~85 GBP ticket will be worthless.
For what it's worth it's all media hype. People in general don't give a f***.

Everything in Norway is turned into politics, I doubt people in the rest of the world are aware of the quite unique situation in that country. When the Utoya massacre happened I was not in the slightest surprised cause I have met so many disgruntled norwegians who were sick and tired of the politics in their own country. I would urge anyone to read about the politics of the country since they struck oil in the north sea.

the only reason I am looking forward to this is on the chance he does say something absurd :lbf:
I mean lets be real here, its mostly what he is good for these days :o

This story probably is just a way to get more attention for the event. I doubt most of the fans in Norway don't want to see Morrissey because of the comments. Clearly this was not a shinning moment for M, but I understood what he meant (without agreeing) and I thought his explanation was reasonable. Can we please let this go?!?

Don't count the man out yet, Brother!! ;)

You have articulated NO argument and thus, have shown that YOU are the one who lacks critical thinking skills and keeps YOUR head up YOUR rear.

Morrissey's statement was one of numbers and cannot be debated. Billions more critters are murdered by the fast food industry than are humans gunned down by mental cases. "Nothing" is an expression to emphasize the vast difference in quantity. Example:

"Remember those tarballs that washed ashore during Isaac – that's nothing compared to Natural oil pollution."
(September 12, 2012, Anthony Watts.)

Odd Arvid Stroemstad is a managing director of an advertising agency. No doubt a good share of his income as a manager, director, and shareholder is derived by endorsing the the exploiting fast food industry. His opinion is biased.

Although you present zero argument, I presume you believe that human life is more valuable than animal life and you want to feel better about yourself for being a general-murderer (because you believe that only homicidal murderers are culpable.) But you have no argument, no logic, just your bossy little order: "Don't even try to compare them because they never will be the same." Who said they were the "same"?

If you think that you're pro-life, well, you've got to be joking.

BlueSkiesInTheDaytime

If you think that Morrissey's comments were spot-on, you need to get your head out of your ass and take your self-righteous douchebaggery elsewhere. Morrissey was stupid enough to compare his views on animal treatment in the fast-food industry to the slaughter of 77 humans in Norway.I'm not saying that the way they treat animals is right, but I am saying that you lack critical thinking skills if you think Morrissey's comparision was "right-on." I wouldn't want him to perform the concert either. I would consider it if Morrissey apologized for his dumbass comments. But he didn't.

Utter bollocks, mate. It was Morrissey doing damage-limitation. His original comment at the concert suggested he had very little sympathy for the massacre victims. He issued a statement to deny this, and give some context to his comments about the meat industry.
Morrissey's said a lot of nasty bigoted nonsense in recent times but this statement was clearly well intentioned.

It may have been well-intentioned, but it was certainly opportunism - and - he said the victims weren't named, which looked ridiculous within hours as they were named.

This is acceptable and well intended. He took necessary steps to clear up any misunderstanding of his comment in Warsaw. It's forgivable, for crying out loud. I completely get what he is saying about how it "naturally follows that you feel horror at the murder of ANY innocent being." I think it makes sense. He was obviously disturbed as much as anybody by the massacre. I agree he's made quite a few ridiculous comments in the past few years, but can't he be forgiven at least once? Especially when he tries to make it right?

May your next cup of tea be luke warm at best.

Norway is held up as a socialist paradise in certain quarters here in UK, built on its massive oil reserves. The SNP go on about it endlessly and seem to hold it up as a blueprint for Scots independence. It sounds anything but, and the idea the descendants of Vikings would stand by and allow the social engineering to fully take hold seems a little naive on the part of the ruling parties. Someone was bound to take action.

The full story of what had been going on on Utoya in the years before the massacre makes quite disturbing reading. I remember the Norwegian Prime Minister saying something to the effect that the victims were the future leaders of the country, but I'm pretty sure that decision lies with the voters, not the parties, unless we are being misled. The Prime Minister's words didn't sound like the usual palaver associated with tragedies of that sort. He sounded quite sure in his assertions.

As for Morrissey, he's a sociopath, pure and simple, and anything he says needs to be filtered through his bitter, shark-eyed hypocrisy.

so what happened to free speech? moz can say what he wants, its all good in my eyes,as for Norway,if it wasn't for their oil companys,it would be just another country we bypass,
I for one have no intention of setting foot in that part of the world, not ever.

"What happened to free speech?" That's rich from a member of the "shut up criticising Morrissey" brigade.

Free speech is very important. I use my right to it to point out Morrissey is a sociopath. I recently read his five hundred page treatise on mental illness.

Real name. Contact details. A photograph of your actual self. Then you'll be using your right to free speech.

Silly boy. :)
