Hi all,
seems that i will have to stay indoors for a couple of days, chained to bed and sofa. i'm looking for some music docs preferably on youtube to watch while lying around scratching myself.

yesterday i watched this one on bowie's berlin trilogy in 9 parts. 3 parts were missing, but, hell, i won't complain as it's all for free:

and then this one on krautrock - the rebirth of germany with iggy making a tryst:

so, if you have any recommendations, i'd be happy to know. my taste in music is eclectic, so everything from abba to splasher power violence thrash metal is dearly welcome.
cheers

If you can put up with Portuguese subtitles, then this one on Joy Division is a must.

Also, this one on Bruce Springsteen's The River album, released last December. Priceless.

Thanks for the Bowie documentary, bookmarked it.

A couple of days ago I stumbled across this on the tv: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1483313.
I joined in somewhere in the middle of the episode on postpunk and than watched the first half I missed on youtube, pretty satisfying.

This is also quite decent, if you haven't seen it yet:

Big star - nothing can hurt me

Filmage - the story of the descendents/all

Dig, the Brian Jonestown dandy warhorse doc

Kill your idols is a doc about three decades of no wave

fugazi instrument is more a musical statement than a traditional doc as said by many but is good. Covers the 87 through 96 period

A fat wreck is the story nofxs indie record label which has been around a long time and built up a significant amount of influence. Also backstage pass is fun if you like Nofx

Morrissey's influences are mentioned in the first part. From 15 to 30 minutes.

thanks guys, great collection of music docus. i will continue with the springsteen one in a minute that gregor mentioned above. reminded me of the thrilling docu "cold war of concerts" about the 1988 concerts that took place in west and east berlin shortly before the wall came down, springsteen, cocker, brown, dylan, etc. seems that the gdr government had tried to instrumentalize springsteen for their own socialist agenda, as he allegedly had supported the sandinists in nicaragua with a print shop, and thus they wanted to put the show under the motto "a heart for nicaragua". springsteen was then preparing a speech in german in order to address the almost 300.000 concert goers. as he had asked the organizers for the german word for "wall", they almost fainted fearing the worst, a political speech, that would involve them in deep trouble. eventually he said that he hoped that all "barricades" would tumble down one day, which was then accepted by the authorities. well, that's all history by now of course.

thanks, looking forward to neil young and the cobain doc. hype and the heartworn are already among my most treasured home dvds.

this here is a real gem, too. seems that the women were the more intelligent punks. quite interesting how they had to face the double hostility of their society being not only punks but also women not interested in making themselves look and be available to men.

I ALMOST hate to bring this up, but in this documentary, the other band members unsuccessfully sued the writer of the songs for royalties. Just shows how corrupt the British judicial system is, Morrissey should have never have had to pay royalties to Joyce and Rourke.

I really like the hype one even if I didn't like all the bands filed under grunge like sound garden or Alice in chains etc. the footage from those early years in Seattle were just interesting to watch. It showed the isolated weird and goofy arty side to the early scene. I also really like that guy cutting up his collectible flyers for some reason and the guy who explained the difference between punk and grunge power chord progression. This is punk, goes up on the fret with an bottom e string rooted power chord, and this is grunge, does the opposite and goes down. That always makes me laugh. Heartworn is just extremely well made. I could see that in the u.k punk scene. While I enjoy some u.k punk bands I'm mostly into original American hardcore and the stuff that grew out of that over the years. Sex pistols and the early damned records I really like but stuff like the clash isn't for me nor is a lot of the British post punk. Always like a doc though so I'll try and watch it but it's hard for me to do any activity that takes requires any long focus. My son is all over the place and requires constant intervention supervision at the moment. The two equivalent American stuff I can think of would be the riot grrl movement as they were staunchly feminist, which was awesome, as they faced a lot of these issues and were a lot more thought provoking at times and the gay kids in hardcore mainly around Hollywood. In those early days hardcore could be very split between accepting thoughtful outsider and dumb violent destructive bonehead. A lot of the gay hardcore kids like randy and the screamers etc tended to put more thought into what they were doing as a lot of there physical instincts could be frowned upon. Darby from the germs felt he could never publicly come out and still be respected. Randy of course was never shy about it

Surfpunks L.A. punk doc Dutch TV
45 minutes long dutch documentary on so cal punk scene with rare footage of Unit3 with Venus), Suicidal Tendencies (first line-up), 45 Grave, China White , The Germs, Casey Cola, & Phranc.

The first suicidal album is like the only good one. Also anyone expecting any surf rock elements in any of those bands should look elsewhere. good list though it needs some black flag and some descenedents x and social distortion Imo. The germs, and Darby, are probably one of my fav things ever

thanks, you're welcome.

watched another docu that i can recommend warmly. it's about "chicks (sic!) in bands", and i like how these women talk about their past, honestly and reflectively, which offers an alternative view on the whole music business

To keep with the theme of girls in music you could check out girls gone vinyl the untold story of female dos. Sidebar had lots of interesting stuff in it
