Post Millennial: "Morrissey: How did the ultimate anti-establishment artist make it against all odds?" by Fiona Dodwell (October 17, 2020)

"We have become acclimatized to safe public figures who brand themselves as a commodity like a soft drink, palatable at first but devoid of any substantial nourishment."

No, there's really no point. Not when so many people on here seem so eager to belittle themselves with absolutely no encouragement from anyone else.
... at least he’s easy to train.

Radis desperately needs the approval of the more established Morrissey hate mongers. He is one of life’s followers.
he brings skinny his tea in the morning.

That's probably true in the sense that we all form relationships on the basis of being in some sense on the same wavelength, even if it's with someone who is superficially different.

It's not the same as saying "everyone prefers their own race" though. This is a racist statement because it stems from the a priori belief that humanity is made up of different races. Which it isn't. 'Black' is not a race, nor is 'Asian' in any real genetic sense. Nor is 'white'. 'Black' for that matter isn't even a meaningful collective term - it's simply English for 'negro' but at some point in the past it became an acceptable political term, whilst negro became unacceptable.

Yes, it is the same. The idea of physical races is a later meaning. It means group. The Irish are very often referred to as a race so it's a natural word for him to have picked up.

No. I don’t believe longevity of a band always leads to a more successful career.

Morrissey is were he is thanks to his start with The Smiths.”

No.

Then why didn’t the other Smiths also benefit ? Don’t you think the others in the Smiths were just as talented as Morrissey?

yet strangely they went nowhere.

Morrissey would have eventually made his mark with or without Marr.

Generally when a band splits it's generally the vocalist who tends to continue to be successful but you already knew that didn't you.

‘tends’ ? maybe. But not always necessarily true.

Every band member after a split has the same chance to be successful, that’s if they have the drive and talent to do so. But you already knew that didn’t you.

dear fiona,

please interview julia riley and see if that's your future.

best of luck,
klaus

Thing is, you know f*** all about me. You can dismiss me as a racist if you want. But that also means that you've got to dismiss the bulk of humanity as well. Interestingly, at the anti-racist workshop offered by my employer as a response to the BLM crises unfolding this summer, a similar statement acknowledging that we are all human beings that have biases, and that it is part of our nature to form them was provided by the instructor, and taken as gospel by the participants. Does that make her, and the rest of my colleagues racist too?
Congratulations. You know two people who say folk prefer their own race. That gives you an unimpeachable insight. Well done.

That people are drawn towards other people just like them is a well studied phenomenon of behavioural psychology. It's why 'unconscious bias' is now taught as a standard to interview panels these days.

Johnny Marr has indeed been very successful. Just this year he's played on a UK No. 1 single, appeared on the Brits and worked on the new James Bond soundtrack.

He's also seen as an elder statesman of rock'n'roll, regularly being quoted on music, politics in music, the arts and creativity. That should have been Morrissey, but it's not.

and sat like a twat watching kylie minogue perform some drivel,is that how far hes fallen,an industry guitar for hire.and as for bond, having listened to the gun barrel sequence you might struggle to hear much of marrs work in the final score.

Absolutely. If he had said people prefer their own nationality, no one would have batted an eyelid. The nation state is just basic animal 'pack behaviour' but with language and culture, and flags and a national anthem thrown in. Animals like to form groups and show aggression to those perceived as being outside the group. Go to any school playground and you will see this in operation. That people prefer those perceived as belonging to their 'group' is just scientific fact. For 'group' replace with race, nationality, social class, gender, age etc.

In experiments they've found we can form groups nearly instantly & bond even if we're arbitrarily assigned them. The bonds will be stronger if we've been through some real or imagined shared experience (esp a traumatic one) - so that's why history becomes important.
