Potential US Presidential Candidate Picks The Smiths Song

If anyone but Barak Obama wins the presidency, I'm moving to Canada (sorry Canadians).

er, did I read this differently?
The NME chose the playlist... not the candidate himself.

Unlike in the UK where we have Dave 'bandwagon jumper with no actual policies' Cameron, openly declaring his love of all things Smiths and Morrissey - ignoring the fact that Morrissey himself despises the tories and in particular their former leader, one maggie 'off with her head' thatcher.

you read it correctly the goat...NME picked the songs, Edwards has nothing to do with it.

beau..do you think the country is ready to elect someone with a name like Barak Obama...only the progressives. the swing voters will be scared.

Speaking from this side of the pond - we dont have a f*****g idea as to who ANY of the candidates are.
Though voting for a dead slug must be better than voting for George W Shrub. Thankfully that total numbskull cannot stand again. Please dont tell me one of his relatives is going for it.....

 You don't know? Why? You're not interested or too little information from.. those who should inform you?:)

Yup. Jeb Bush in 2008, and my urge to kill myself rises.....

We are more than aware that 'Our Blair' is shagging 'Your Bush' senseless, (though Bush is f*****g our country senseless at the same time) but beyond that we - via our wonderful media - have no idea as to who is doing what on either side of your political divide to replace the brainless wonder in 2008. And why should we?
America is not the world......

What an odd thing to say since you don't yet know what Obama will even run on.

Some people always promise to move to Canada after an election but, sadly, they never do. :(

Maybe so. But the same could be said about voting for John Kerry. So there's your explanation.

Hang the NME, Hang this presidential candidate, hang the senate, hang the house of representatives, hang the MP's in house of commons! Create a Jedi council led by Arnold Schwenegger and Samuel L Jackson! Unite the world by love for eating cookies!

You're a good person because you wanna vote for a guy simply because his skin is dark and his name sounds foreign. Well, a lot of conservatives would leap to vote for Condie Rice. She not only has darker skin than Obama, she doesn't even have a penis (though she has balls).

Barack Hussein Obama is fashioning himself as a "bipartisan centrist" - an alternative to Hillary Clinton and her negatives and corruptions. Didn't "progressives" try and purge centrist Joe Leiberman?

If Obama is a centrist, he'll have more appeal amongst swing voters than "progressives"/socialists. If he intends to win, he'll have a Clinton-style "Sister Soulja" moment where he kicks the "progressives," signaling to swing voters his commitment to keeping the prosperity of the USA going strong as it has since Reagan. :)

As for the name, "Barack Obama" is universally regarded as a cool one (without the Hussein part) and has been one of his biggest assets in creating his hype and celebrity status, in addition to his "nice guy" persona that he manages despite being too much of an Ivy League type.

It's not anything he has done. He hasn't done anything. It's not what he'll propose on various issues in his campaign. No one knows beyond the broadest, safest of statements. This is also why people like him. They can fantasize him into being whatever they want.

But how do "progressives" feel about Obama scolding their incoherent national security policies in his book? He adds: "It's useful to remind ourselves, then, that Osama bin Laden is not Ho Chi Minh, and that the threats facing the United States are real, multiple, and potentially devastating."

Amazing that "progressives" need to be reminded, but most of the "progressives" I meet believe 9/11 was an inside job.

He has stated he'd support missile strikes on Iran to keep them from getting nukes, and military action in Pakistan to secure their arsenal if Islamo-fascists take over the country.

Unlike "progressives" who cheered on Hizballah's crimes against humanity, Obama strongly supported Israel in their recent conflict. He "co-sponsored a resolution endorsing Israel's right to self-defense and condemning Hamas and Hezbollah. He also co-sponsored the Palestinian Anti-Terrorism Act of 2006, discouraging international aid to Hamas or contacts with it unless Hamas recognizes Israel, disarms, and renounces violence."

I'd only consider voting for him if the best candidate, and most trustworthy centrist, fails to make it through the GOP primaries.

The man who turned New York City around, and while doing so was called "Adolf Giuliani" by the "progressives," so dedicated are they to dragging New York (and America) down.

The genuine leader who was at ground zero donning a mask when his fellow New Yorkers were being mass-murdered by the Islamo-Nazi barbarians that "progressives" are reluctant to admit even exist.

The man who really had the best speech in the party conventions before the 2004 election, despite the hype over Obama's.

The man who would be a nightmare to the Terror-Loving Sons of Allah, Right Wing Christianists, and the Socialist Progressives.

In those first few hours of bewilderment, and the following days of grief and horror, New York's Mayor Rudy Giuliani has been at the centre of events, ensuring practical help, identifying with the suffering of the city's people, offering hope and reassurance for the future.

On the day of the disaster that changed the skyline of the Big Apple, he ventured so close to the chaos that had been the World Trade Center that he had to be ushered away, dust on his shoulders. The next day he returned, wearing a surgical mask.

***

Born in Brooklyn to a working-class family, the grandson of Italian immigrants, he graduated from law school and climbed the legal ladder until he made headlines as US Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

Spearheading the effort to jail drug dealers, mobsters and white-collar criminals, he secured more than 4,000 convictions and lost only 25 cases. He was elected Mayor in 1993, on a ticket focussing on the quality of life, crime, business and education. He was re-elected in 1997.

In his eight-year tenure, Giuliani has disproved a popular notion that New York is ungovernable. The dangers of the City's streets were once notorious, but crime has been cut by half and the murder rate by 70 per cent.

For the past five years, the FBI has rated New York as the safest large city in America. Single women wander without fear at night, the city is cleaner and Times Square is no longer a centre of sleaze.

Mayor Giuliani has also cut welfare rolls in half while moving more than 640,000 individuals from dependency on the government to what he describes as "the dignity of self-sufficiency".

***

Despite his reputation, he is broadly liberal on gay issues, abortion and immigration, and he now lives in the spare room of an apartment belonging to two gay friends.

He won widespread sympathy and admiration when he announced last year that he had prostate cancer. This was a Mayor admitting a degree of vulnerability and uncertainty, while still maintaining his dignity.

Had he not been laid low by events, he might have beaten Hillary Clinton in last year's New York Senate race. Had George Bush lost the White House contest, it seems Giuliani might have sought the Presidency in 2004.

The time for his next act has come.
