Should I be panicking or something?

I'm curious, is our country about to implode? This bailout happens and the stocks dropped like a sack of brown stinky stuff. And apparently the Nikkei is down and now Japan is proposing a bailout. Did they have greedy sub prime mortgaging going on too? Japan is now scaring me.

I need to go buy some canned goods and gallons of water! The end is NIGH! *runs and hides*:D

I say no. But if you want to understand what's going on as well as probably anybody does, go to NPR.org or iTunes & look for the Planet Money podcast.

It's a new thing they're doing just to cover the current $ problems. There's no political spin, they just find really smart people who know firsthand what's happening & ask them questions & then explain it so normal people can understand. They're scooping all the other media as far as I can tell, b/c I keep hearing their reports explained poorly on other shows/channels 24 hours after I heard it on planet money. (I don't work for NPR or anything I was just excited to come across this since I was wondering the same thing you were. :o)

I don't think it's just your country...

...Sometimes, I wonder if our Americans friends fully realize they've kindly shared the crisis with us, aka the rest of the world?

Anyway: everybody in Iceland: permission to panic. (It'll keep you warm, guys!)

We'll follow suit.

Who else is thinking of buying a safe? (I've got bones to hide!)

it all comes down to what your definition is of implode. Marketwise, now is the time to buy certain stocks that will always experience long term growth. Something such as Coca Cola will never bring you a bad turn as people will always drink the stuff or one of their related products. Energy stocks are always a safe bet. Even if the country were to switch off the gas mains, a company like Exxon Mobil would divert its attention to new power sources to stay in the game.

I love NPR, and its ALMOST no political spin, but I hear the DC NPR and it definitely leans eeeever so slightly to the left.

I love car talk and wait wait dont tell me. which arent very informative at all! I'll hook up to money planet today, thank you for the suggestion!

BARKING: Its not the average american's fault :(

Woof! Now now now, don't feel bad, we all know that.

I just live in the hope that all this will lead to a better world, after some serious international clean up. Well, one can dream...

It'll probably just mean the poor getting poorer and the rich getting richer again though. Once again, a world in which kids eat mud on one side and billionaires speculate in wheat on the other. That sort of stuff. Again.

What can we do? What can the average person do?

Disagree.

maybe its like when the forest burns down and then flourishes more than it did before the fire?
yeah we can disagree until the cows come home but I am far more fatalistic about the future. I have no hope. No old hope, no new hope, Luke cannot save me.

Haha! Yeah, I listen in Nashville and it's the same. Actually this thing is done by some of the same people who do This American Life. They did a show a few months ago called "The Giant Pool of Money" which thoroughly explained the sub-prime mortgage mess. Then they did one last week called "Another Frightening Show about the Economy" which explains the credit crisis. The Planet Money thing is a spinoff of that. So anyway, if you're interested I'd recommend also downloading those two episodes of TAL. If you get the "Economy" one today it should still be free. (Actually if you don't already listen to TAL - it's fantastic and normally about more interesting things than the economy. But when they do a show on anything they do it right and it's definitely worth subscribing to).

But this Luke can save you!

"Until the cows come home": First time I hear that lovely expression. You a cowgirl?

There are many things you can do in these hard times to save money.

Use t-bags twice.
Buy budget loo roll and only two sheets at a time.
Turn you car engine off when going down the hill and save petrol.
Cancel your children's magazine subscriptions and your own subscription to Heat magazine.
Get your bloke to cancel his porn subscription and ask if the neighbour would mind sharing theirs.
Wash your hair with bubble bath (did this yesterday.)
Rob an old lady.

bah.....who cares, we're all in it together, the world's in need of a revolution, it's all good. :)

I sort of agree with this. :o I don't want a bloody revolution, but I feel like this was inevitable & this crash is the implosion of a bunch of bubbles of fake money that never really existed anyway.

Don't turn off your car engine. I'm not an expert on this but the for some reason the words "power steering" and "power brakes" come to mind.

I'm not panickin at all... I'm actually very thankful for this economic crisis... it ensures that Obama/Biden win in Nov... so it's all good.

Sucks for the people losing their money and all.. but I'm happy :D... and selfish!

As always, I'm loving your avatar and signature  Welcome 'back'...Just in time for elections ;)

I responded to my Aunt's email --not to send me any more Anti-Obama stuff. It's been 3 hours and I'm totally shocked nobody has emailed me. It went to about 15 people I didn't know. :p
