silly question...

i am right at the moment watching the movie elisabeth, with cate blanchett, and i was wondering how elisabeth I is actually regarded by english people? english people who listen to morrissey, specifically.

i know morrissey immensely dislikes the monarchy, and it makes me wonder if all royal historical figures are regarded as embarassing tyrants too, or if people with socialist leanings (me for example) believe any were good leaders.

i apologize for being ignorant, i blame the deficient american school system. i learned in excruciating detail about the usa's mere 200 and some years of "noteworthy" events while being told virtually nothing about the THOUSANDS of years of things that happened in the rest of the world. everything i know i learned from movies! :D (kidding! half maybe)

p.s. i already know maggie thatcher is evil, i am not counting her or anyone else so recently in power and yes, i do know she was not the queen

Hmmmmmmmmm, interesting. I've never really thought about it that much, to be honest, I mean current monarchy I'm not a fan of, but in history...I mean Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth 1st were both very strong women from what I have seen which was rare for the time. And they had a huge amount of powere which was unheard of. The trouble is, I can't think about Elizabeth the 1st without thinking about Queenie from Blackadder!!!! LOL!!!!
I might cme back to this question...

Annabel, some parts of the historical facts in the film are not accurate.
The screenplay is spiced up for telling a story about Elizabeth I.
Especially relationship between Queen of the Scotland Mary and Elizabeth I is really different.
I hope some people will give you better information about historical facts. :o

Incidentally Helen Mirren also played Elizabeth I for TV series which is really worth watching. :)

Not all are regarded as you call them 'tyrants', elisabeth and say, queen victoria are spoken about with much respect.

and why should the American education system teacher you about British history in any great depth?

your country history is rich with it's own heritage.

not everyone has the same views about the 'Royals' as morrissey has.

but this new lot, are a waste of time:p

i think it's stupid that we learned practically nothing about the rest of the world, britain included. they make you learn about the effing revolutionary war all over again every year, and they dont even get into vietnam until like 10 or 11th grade. in elementary school we were taught really basic things like egypt had mummies and greece had philosphers and democracy... and then once they started in on the late 1700's, in 4th grade, the rest of the world's history was completely ignored. seriously america is not that interesting!

also: regarding the inaccuracies of the movie elisabeth someone mentioned, i know movies based on real people are almost never strictly factual, i wasn't expecting to watch a documentary :D
