Stephen Street interview on BBC News site

A nice little article about Stephen Street in advance of his Outstanding Achievement award at the Music Producers' Guild Awards.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-51360201

Includes a few little things like this:

During the earlier recording of Strangeways, the producer remembers how [nearly all of] The Smiths liked to balance hard work with references to their favourite comedy.

"Johnny [Marr] and Andy [Rourke] were completely obsessed with Spinal Tap," he says, "and there were mini Stonehenges of cigarette packs left all over the studio.... Andy had learned - by note - the bass line to Big Bottom!

"We only did that when Morrissey wasn't in the room, though. Don't worry."

May some god bless you Stephen street for all the pop songs you have produced , god only knows himself where the likes of us lot may have ended up.....without you...

I know. Artists with something original to say are difficult? Who knew? I guess it's easier than listing all of the lame artists who are easy to work with.

Reductive does not equate with 'original'.
Morrissey is possibly the biggest plagiarist on the planet.

Morrissey wouldn’t have had such a great start to his solo career without Stephen Street.... let us all not forget this fact.... every day is like Sunday... is one of the greatest singles ever.... morrissey made a mistake here, it should have been the lead single...a sure number 1 just like first of the gang should have been the lead single.... oh well I’ll never learn

YES! Same for every article that’s not a fawning love-in, by some sycophant little bitch like yourself, right?

YES! gordyboy9 is going to Vegas! If he plays his dollar slots for long enough, he’ll get comp tix for the front row of the second balcony, with the rest of the seat fillers. ...and the free surf and turf!!!!

Everyday Is Like Sunday is stunning and I agree with what you're saying but Suedehead is a belter of a song too and has a much better video than Sunday and in those days videos were a massive part of the pop world. In my opinion Suedehead is his greatest video and Sunday his greatest single & song.

Back in the day it was a common strategy to leave the most commercial song for the second single. The lead single would awake the interest and the second single would be even more important, because now people could go and buy the album too. Since Suedehead charted better than any of the Smiths singles, it proved itself to be a very good introductory song.

I totally agree that Suedehead and EDILS are his two best singles ever. I wonder if Morrissey's launch from the Smiths to Morrissey would have been as successful as it was without those two singles? Possibly.

But then now having written that I have to mention Morrissey and Street's Last of the Famous International Playboys. It probably is my favourite Morrissey song of all time. This proves Suedehead and EDILS were definitely not flukes. Ouija Board sneaks in there too as a strong contender. God Street was onto something wasn't he? At least he got some more Moz work post Viva Hate.
