Atonement. I've just come out of the cinema. It was beautiful, I cried my eyes out.... :tears::o

Re: tell us about the last Film you saw.

I've actually watched "A Taste of Honey" a few times recently..Its refreshing to watch a movie with substance over style..Was fun to play, spot the Moz quote..

Death Proof (2007)

Director:
Quentin Tarantino
Writer:
Quentin Tarantino (written by)

tagline: A White-Hot Juggernaut At 200 Miles Per Hour!

Quotes:
Stuntman Mike: Well, Pam... Which way you going, left or right?
Pam: Right!
Stuntman Mike: Oh, that's too bad...
Pam: Why?
Stuntman Mike: Because it was a fifty fifty shot on wheter you'd be going left or right. You see we're both going left. You could have just as easily been going left, too. And if that was the case... It would have been a while before you started getting scared. But since you're going the other way, I'm afraid you're gonna have to start getting scared... immediately!

I have to agree not the best from Quentin Tarantino. As he makes his own homage to 70s muscle car movies and low budget exploitation cinema. While you can see and realize that film is made from a lot of money, the director still, places little nods to 'grind-house' with some bad editing, scratches on the film and the changing of the films title. And his direction, is a the work of a craftsman as the shoots are arranged perfectly and some dialogue scenes are filmed in a roving one take. This is something you don't see in a grainy slasher film from the mid 70s.

Like with all his films he uses the dialogue to build up the characters, away from the main films narrative or plot, which in this movie was too much and wasn't needed in many respects and didn't work to build up the tension which you need in a horror movie. We have two groups of 'pray' for the serial killer who calls himself Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell). Both are separate stories, which is different from more linear plots of the genre that Taratino is celebrating here. Also his writing of the conversation between the girls is more spontaneously then you expect from exploitation cinema. (I feel that the actors, are acting in a way that you only see in a Tarantino movie, as if Tarantino was playing all the roles. The actors are all trying to be him!). Where the script would be more simplistic and just mainly about the main plot. We don't really get to understand why he (stuntman Mike) is a murderer.

The events in the film, for the killer (as he seeks another group of women to murder) in his 'death proof' stunt car, turn around. As this prey are given a chance to fight back. This gives the film an exciting car chase.

As Zoe Bell ( a stunt woman who plays herself) is hanging on to the bonnet of the car. The car used in this film and why it is, is expressed between two of the characters. It is a white 1970 Dodge Challenger, which was used in the cult movie 'Vanishing Point' . As a part of the dialogue is Zoe Bell and Kim (Tracie Thoms) talking about 70s road movies.
I enjoyed this film, but it was far great; but enjoyable with it's little nods to some 70s movies. But the car chases are not as good as say in Mad Max or Bullitt.

cloverfield..totally not worth it

I just saw it tonight. I liked it. It made me yelp outloud a few times (I am not a screamer or yelper!) and I was honestly entertained. However, I did go to the movie actually not knowing anything about it so I had no expectations.

There were a lot of kids/teenagers at the movie and when it ended, this kid sitting in the row behind us said about 5x, "WORST MOVIE EVER!" :p I could think of about 50 movies that were worse than this. I actually thought Tom Cruise's "War Of The Worlds" was much, much worse. Cloverfield wasn't awful, but it's not going to be winning an Oscar for best movie or anything.

I just watched 'Juno'. I thought it was really good. you should see it.

Re: tell us about the last Film you saw.

"There Will Be Blood"

What a strange film. I liked it, but it's not nearly as great as the critics seem to think (at least in my opinion).

At least it's unconventional - it's got a very Herzog feel to it. There's just something missing in Daniel Plainview's character - he's empty, but maybe that's the point.

That last scene is just awesome.

Needless to say, Daniel Day-Lewis is stunning. I read an article yesterday where someone said that he is actually frightening to work with, and I believe it.

If you like bleakness, filth, emptiness and rage, I highly recommend it.

Casino Royale

I had avoided this one really but the lads wanted to see it yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised. Lets face it, you know what you are getting with Bond, they don't change some things, girls, fast cars exotic locations. Its just a bond for now, up to date and by god is Daniel Craig Manly, I thought ewww no he can't be Bond, he does not look like a Bond. The old Bond stated he wanted his drink shaken not stirred, this Bond does not give a damn. I like that.

I've never been fond of Bond either, but I also liked this one. A brutal, nihilistic bond is a good thing - enough with the cocktails already.

I remember reading somewhere that Daniel Craig wants bond to have a boyfriend AND a girlfriend in the next film, but I don't think that is going to go anywhere. What a shame, that would really stir (and shake) things up.

BOND CAN'T HAVE A BOY FRIEND!

*interesting*

Re: tell us about the last Film you saw.

P.S. I Love You - tried to see Sweeney Todd, but was sold out, so I let my wife choose - and got this! The sugar and saccharine are spread thick in this tale of a man who dies and leaves his widow certain tasks to do in the form of letters sent after his death by his mother-in-law. Irritating characters, poor soundtrack and the worst Irish accent in living memory from Gerard Butler. Hilary Swank is usually very good, but this was not one of her better choices. There were a few smiles to be had and it obviously affected some of the large audience, as there were a few girls behind me in hysterics and tears. Overlong and dull - but what do I know? If you a sucker for films like Ghost, then go and see it.

Re: tell us about the last Film you saw.

I've watched The Simpsons Movie, Waitress, Lost In Translation, and Romeo & Juliet (Franco Zeffrelli)

The History Boys-
Lots of good music in this film including This Charming Man. I think most Smiths/Morrissey fans could appreciate it.

Cloverfield-
The constant movement of the camera along with the bloody scenes made me feel like I would hurl.

Sweeny Todd-
Also bloody, but a good film overall. :D

I'll stop there, because I've seen many films in the past month. Btw/ I recently met someone that's obsessed with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Is there anyone on this board that's interested in Buffy? It seems so cheesy to me he he.

I loved The History Boys! It almost reminded me of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, minus the girls and it took place in the '80s instead of the '30s (or, was it the '20s?). I don't blame you about Cloverfield, 'cuz I would feel sick if I watched it and I totally can't stand horror movies or bizzare sci-fi's, 'cuz they end up haunting me for the rest of my life and mostly make me nervous. About Buffy, I have a few friends who loves the show and sometimes they'll never shut up about it. Never watched it, but I could have some of my friends tell you about it.

Dead Man, 1995

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112817/

While I'm usually a fan of Jim Jarmusch and Johnny Depp (leaving aside the unnutterable horror that is Pirates of the Carribbean) I found this neo-western slightly disappointing. Despite a rather odd cameo from Iggy Pop, some beautiful aesthetic touches and some cleverly worked Dante allusions it was just all a bit slow and pondorous.
