The 1981 gay pride march in Huddersfield - Morrissey spotted in photos?

If you ask me, that's him, no doubt.

I can assure you he is. He had a relationship in LA with a hollywood memorabilia business owner. Around the time of this photo he also placed an ad in the NME men seeking men column. The letters exist. For people from the inner circle it is an accepted fact. Most closeted gay men spent years stating they were bisexual or celibate or hateful of sex etc etc It is a common thing. It is interesting how you can categorically state he isnt a practising gay man when YOU could never know.
You cannot assure me as you don't know either. I admit I am speculating - airing my opinion - you should too.

No I disagree. You simply want your idol to be gay because you are gay.

But if Moz were truly gay he would be flying the rainbow flag like every other gay.

But he never has flown it and, as we all know, never will.

He was flirting with the gay scene in the 80s because back then it was a rebellious and edgy thing to do.

there are many gay men not flying the flag. I am one. I also spent years with a photo of a woman in my wallet saying it was my wife to cover the fact with work colleagues. I am out now but I know of many who are not and will deny it to their death. I know one who had a secret relationship with a man for years then couldn't handle people thinking he was gay so he got married but he is gay and and even his wife doesn't know. Stop presuming everyone is the same.

Well, I do own it(rogans book) Read it only once when it came out. I remember reading something about Morrissey being into horror/comic books or something as a child, and that was enough for me.

And Morrissey disputed it after also.
Oh, really, we're still talking about the comic books? I know that he had a problem with that bit for some reason. I don't know what's so bad about reading comic books, but if that really was the part that bothered him the most, the rest can't be that bad.
Maybe that bit really wasn't true but that's hardly an important part of the book.

And Morrissey himself has talked about liking the Batman TV series starring Adam West multiple times, including Autobiography and some interviews, so maybe he did read the occasional comic book as well 😉

Not inevitably, I’m sure I remember Ian Brown saying that he attended a Pride march in the 80s (or something similar).

Is it not more likely gay libbers joined another march?

Pride was shockingly fringe considering it went on to be as commercialised as Christmas.

I know of a specific occasion when Moz was out with some friends in London and they needed to walk across soho to get to where they were going and he insisted on not walking through the gay area around Old Compton St in case he was seen so they had to walk all the way around avoiding that area. For someone who is allegedly open about his views he seems to be ashamed of being seen to be gay or even thought of being gay. So many contradictions
Yes. Then there's the way he makes Damon walk six paces behind him at all times and carry his bags so that he's 'just his assistant.' At the Legend premiere, you could just about spot him in the background, but he was never going to be publicly acknowledged as his partner. Which I do find weird, and more in keeping with what gay celebrities did in times past, like Frankie Howerd. As you say, it's almost like he's ashamed.

Yes, I guess that’s more likely.

It was to me! I don’t know why. Maybe because it just didn’t sit right with my image of him as a pre/teen. And later when Morrissey actually commented on that, I felt my suspicions of that not being true vindicated. lol.

I’m sure he watched Batman for other ... reasons. :brows:

In reading all of this, I’m now wondering if a bisexual identity is actually something a lot of people here seem really quite uncomfortable with.

Until Moz got his career into major trouble I didn't pay much attention to his private life (just his work) - but you couldn't escape the gossip when his autobiography came out & no one ever said he was gay, it was assumed you knew.

So whatever he's been doing he's given enough people that impression to make it common knowledge.

Your colleague sounds like a scumbag. I feel bad for his wife

I don't mind at all - it doesn't seem a very mixed event though.

I know the story of him and James Maker being chased out of a gay club by homophobes, (and he said he heard polari first spoken by male prostitutes); maybe not ashamed of "being seen to be gay" but traumatised from being chased and seeing James Maker get kicked around by homophobes

That was not really likely when walking down Old Compton Street in the 90s with a group of friends after dinner. It is far more that that. Someone who is so secretive and doesn't want to even be seen walking past a few gay bars on a busy street is actually obsessed with it. A straight man wouldn't give a shit. He comes from the generation when many people hid it. It wasn't necessary to do so prior to The Smiths hence this march and other things reported on elsewhere such as his Thompsons Arms nights out in Manchester etc. What seemed to take over once The Smiths started was his obsession that he could no longer be seen to be doing these things hence the years of legally blocking such stories, avoiding the issue, being vague, etc etc. I assume there was that fear that it would damage his career and after doing that for so long it then became very difficult to come out for fear of people thinking he has been a fake all that time. There are lots of famous people from back then or earlier who did the same thing but eventually came out and it never affected their careers.

Like writing a song called Piccadilly Palare?

He might be socially awkward & coy about his real relationships - but I don't believe he's ashamed if he'll wax lyrical about gritty prison cell sex in his autobiography.

I found that part very endearing but ultimately it makes no difference to me whether he read comics books as a wee lad or not.

As for Batman... you're probably right. The context in which he mentioned the series was always... interesting.

In Autobiography:
"But Johnny finds the right words: ‘We’re gonna get him,’ and he bangs a fist into an open palm, like Burt Ward as Robin the Boy Wonder."

Which ironically was in reference to another minor thing that upset him greatly - the mentioning of public toilets in an interview or as he called it: "the public toilet disparagement"
