The Moz/Smiths Top 100 - FINAL RESULTS 2010

1st of all, I am posting to this thread without reading the whole thing so far, as I often do :o
anyways, thank you for doing this things 234 song poll thingie Houdini :thumb:
I especially admire your follow through and tabulating then ranking the final results here
honestly, I was quite interested in comparing which songs I play most with how others rank them
here's hoping there are more songs for you to poll in the future! :guitar:

Bravo Houdini for a humongous job , well executed....I am now you're number 1 fan ( Misery ? )...Can I ask you to please tabulate the albums , songwriters , decades , singles , B-sides , etc.. like you did back in 2008 , if that's no trouble to you ( of course , after you get a good night's sleep;) )

Re: The Moz/Smiths Top 100, FINAL RESULTS 2010!!

It pains me to see the low placings of the wonderful unreleased tracks...

Low placings perhaps, but not low ratings.

Everything from no. 210 onwards is rated as over 7. It's tight up there at the top!

Only 8 songs been voted as less than a 6. Amazing really.

found found found in the last 5:tears:

well we voted, I'm not exited with the result, but have to accept
it's poll with lots of people who rate songs higher and lower than me

thanks a lot Houdini, it's dirty job and you did it without interrupting, it
went smoothly,my big aprecaition for how you handled it, maybe a bit
support from Johan, or when you didn't have the time,he went on,just
praise about how you did this enormous poll

and agian, all the best for you and the family, G.

This list comes to show how boring, conservative and stubborn Smiths fans are...I see so many overrated Smiths songs on the top and so many underrated Morrissey songs that should replace them...but...maybe in the next world.

Thanks, and yes, those lists will be forthcoming.
For starters, here's Years of Refusal's performance in the charts:

Something Is Squeezing My Skull, 8,20
Mama Lay Softly on the Riverbed 7,41
Black Cloud 7,28
I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris 8,06
All You Need Is Me 7,98
When Last I Spoke to Carol 7,90
That's How People Grow Up 7,20
One Day Goodbye Will Be Farewell 7,27
It's Not Your Birthday Anymore 8,36
You Were Good in Your Time 6,66
Sorry Doesn't Help 6,22
I'm OK by Myself 7,79

Average song rating: 7,53

Which means it's a tie with Southpaw Grammar:

Morrissey-albums:

1) Vauxhall & I, average score: 8,60
2) Your Arsenal, average score: 8,43
3) Viva Hate, average score: 8,04
4) You Are The Quarry, average score: 7,92
5) Southpaw Grammar, average score: 7,53
6) Years Of Refusal, average score: 7,53
7) Ringleader Of The Tormentors, average score: 7,48
8) Kill Uncle, average score: 7,20
9) Maladjusted, average score: 7,05

I see the opposite, far too many overrated Morrissey songs. As far as I'm concerned, put a song like "Suedehead" on TQID, and it's downright embarassing. Would you be happy if I repaid the compliment and argued that's because people primarily interested in his solo work are stupid, light-headed and without a sense of perspective? Or do you think perhaps it would be better to assume that it's possible to judge music differently without the neccessity for character flaws?

Ah yes of course, very perceptive. In my ignorance I voted 10s for many Smiths tracks and doled out 5s for several solo efforts... and not because (as I thought prior to being enlightened by you) the Smiths songs are superior in every way, I realize now after your post of clarity it was because I'm so STUBBORN! I need to be more openminded about crappy songs and learn not to be bothered by frivolous things like whether I actually like it or not. Well done, Skullock Holmes. What gave me away?

Houdini , are the above scores for SG & Maladjusted in their revised formats or their original ? And what about Swords ? Thanks

The original, in both cases. Interesting to see if the revised editions have better average ratings, so here:

Southpaw Grammar (1995):

1) The Teachers Are Afraid Of The Pupils 7,65
2) Reader Meet Author 8,20
3) The Boy Racer 7,99
4) The Operation 7,29
5) Dagenham Dave 6,80
6) Do Your Best and Don’t Worry 7,31
7) Best Friend On The Payroll 6,60
8) Southpaw 8,42

average score: 7,53

Southpaw Grammar 2009 edition:

1) The Boy Racer 7,99
2) Do Your Best And Don't Worry 7,31
3) Reader Meet Author 8,20
4) Honey, You Know Where To Find Me 7,80
5) Dagenham Dave 6,80
6) Southpaw 8,42
7) Best Friend On The Payroll 6,60
8) Fantastic Bird 6,83
9) The Operation 7,29
10) The Teachers Are Afraid Of The Pupils 7,65
11) You Should Have Been Nice To Me 7,81
12) Nobody Loves Us 8,96

average score: 7,64

So that's a pretty significant improvement, largely due to the inclusion of Nobody Loves Us, the best rated 1995 song.

And as for Maladjusted:

Maladjusted (1997):

1) Maladjusted, 8,34
2) Alma Matters, 7,94
3) Ambitious Outsiders 6,30
4) Trouble Loves Me, 9,12
5) Papa Jack, 5,11
6) Ammunition, 6,69
7) Wide To Receive 7,38
8) Roy's Keen, 6,84
9) He Cried, 6,38
10) Sorrow Will Come In The End, 5,51
11) Satan Rejected My Soul, 7,89

average score: 7,05

Maladjusted (2009 edition):

1) Maladjusted, 8,34
2) Ambitious Outsiders, 6,30
3) Trouble Loves Me, 9,12
4) Lost, 8,40
5) He Cried, 6,38
6) Alma Matters, 7,94
7) Heir Apparent, 7,03
8) Ammunition, 6,69
9) The Edges Are No Longer Parallel 7,90
10) This Is Not Your Country 6,88
11) Wide To Receive 7,38
12) I Can Have Both 8,01
13) Now I Am A Was 7,06
14) Satan Rejected My Soul, 7,89
15) Sorrow Will Come In The End, 5,51

average score: 7,39

An even bigger improvement, replacing Papa Jack (5.11) for Lost (8,40) would have improved the original album bij almost 0,5 point already!

And what about Swords ? Thanks

And here's Swords . It averages at 7.37, which is a little below Years of Refusal (see above):

1) Good Looking Man About Town 7,39
2) Don't Make Fun Of Daddy's Voice 7,15
3) If You Don't Like Me, Don't Look At Me 7,60
4) Ganglord 8,01
5) My Dearest Love 8,52
6) The Never-Played Symphonies 8,51
7) Sweetie Pie 5,53
8) Christian Dior 6,87
9) Shame Is The Name 7,67
10) Munich Air Disaster 1958 7,33
11) I Knew I Was Next 7,40
12) It's Hard To Walk Tall When You're Small 7,44
13) Teenage Dad On His Estate 7,27
14) Children In Pieces 6,80
15) Friday Mourning 8,35
16) My Life Is A Succession Of People Saying Goodbye 7,55
17) Drive-In Saturday 6,66
18) Because Of My Poor Education 6,56

average rating: 7,37

Now, here's a challenge to anyone who's got time on their hands (and is not a man who slits throats): Sort the solo songs by composer, and rank Boz, Alain & co by the averages they achieve....

cheers

This has already been done, with the results 2 years ago, see here.

Boorer actually beat Whyte by quite a margin, though both lost to Street (and Marr of course). I don't think much will change with the 2008/2009 songs though the highest scoring new song (My Dearest Love) would certainly improve Alain's ratings.

I'll gladly add the 2008/2009-songs later on.

I did a list by year in the previous thread, you can find all the results from 1983-2006 there.

Here are the 2008 and 2009 lists:

Best of 2008, average song score: 7,43

1. My Dearest Love (2008) 8,52
2. All You Need Is Me (2008) 7,98
3. That’s How People Grow Up (2008) 7,20
4. Children In Pieces (2008) 6,80
5. Drive-In Saturday (2008) 6,66

Best of 2009, average song score: 7,45

1. It's Not Your Birthday Anymore (2009) 8,36
2. Something Is Squeezing My Skull (2009) 8,20
3. I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris (2009) 8,06
4. When Last I Spoke To Carol (2009) 7,90
5. You Should Have been Nice To Me (2009) 7,81
6. Honey, You Know Where To Find Me (2009) 7,80
7. I'm OK By Myself (2009) 7,79
8. Shame Is The Name (2009) 7,67
9. Mama Lay Softly On The Riverbed (2009) 7,41
10. Black Cloud (2009) 7,28
11. One Day Goodbye Will Be Farewell (2009) 7,27
12. Fantastic Bird (2009) 6,83
13. You Were Good In Your Time (2009) 6,66
14. Because Of My Poor Education (2009) 6,56
15. Sorry Doesn't Help (2009) 6,22

So better years than 2006, 1997 and 1991, but worse than almost any other year.
Here are the averages for all the years:

1983, average score: 8,62 (6 songs)
1984, average score: 8,76 (17 songs)
1985, average score: 8,86 (16 songs)
1986, average song score: 8,31 (14 songs)
1987, average song score: 8,31 (20 songs)
1988, average song-score: 8,23 (18 songs)
1989, average song score: 7,94 (8 songs)
1990, average song score: 7,68 (6 songs)
1991, average score: 7,19 (20 songs)
1992, average song score: 8,10 (14 songs)
1994, average song rating: 8,34 (14 songs)
1995, average song score: 7,74 (15 songs)
1997, average song rating: 7,21 (18 songs)
2004, average song score: 7,66 (24 songs)
2005, average song score: 6,47 (2 songs)
2006, average song score: 7,35 (20 songs)
2008, average song score: 7,43 (5 songs)
2009, average song score: 7,45 (15 songs)

Re: The Moz/Smiths Top 100, FINAL RESULTS 2010!!

Nice to see all my faves WAY down the list..
well I never did follow the crowd. :lbf:

Thank you for all the work this must have cost, the results have been eagerly awaited.

Interesting to see that the highest entry from YOR is no better than 96th. I would have thought it'd do better. Nice to see My Dearest Love getting some recognition, it's a great song.

Of course, like everyone else there's lots of things one could go into, such as the absolute incomprehensibility of Speedway and Suedehead beating all but 3 Smiths songs, but I won't. :)

cheers

Yep. 'Suedehead' especially. I mean, it's a good song, but for me it's nothing special. I'm also vaguely saddened at the fact that the YOR songs are so far down the list and that the album as a whole is rated so badly, although I can't say I'm surprised- lovers of the album such as myself seem to be either the minority or not particularly vocal on here. As I said on another thread, possibly nostalgia or sentimental connections with particular songs or albums has something to do with this... but I digress.

That's what I think too...

Oh, I had no idea, thanks! I agree, it seems unlikely that anything much has changed since then.
