War of words breaks out in Norway over Morrissey’s Nobel Peace gig as singer unforgiven for comparing Anders Behring Breivik massacre to killing animals for fast food - The Independent

Excerpt:

So when the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced this week that Morrissey was joining Mary J Blige and James Blunt at the Oslo ceremony, the Norwegian news website The Local suggested optimistically that it was “a sign he may have been forgiven”.

That proved premature. On Wednesday, Norway’s Aftenposten newspaper ran a comment piece arguing that relatives of Utoya victims and many other Norwegians would find the decision to invite Morrissey “incomprehensible”. Comments on Twitter and newspaper discussion forums echoed the outrage. “Morrissey doesn’t deserve to stand on a stage in this country ever again,” one reader of The Local wrote.

Geir Lundestad, director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute, defended its decision to put Morrissey on the bill, telling The Independent that free speech was an intrinsic value of the Nobel committee and it would never censure an artist.

“We have had for the Nobel Peace Prize concert several hundred musical stars, and many of them have said things which we as organisers strongly disagree with,” he said. But he added: “They are not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize – they are here to be part of a musical tribute to the peace prize laureate.”

Morrissey will perform three songs to an audience of 6,000 in Oslo’s Spektrum Arena as the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons picks up the gong.

Glad Morrissey has his defenders within norwegian high-society! Thankfully everyone isn't like that fascistic mayor, Fabian Stang.

I'd sincerely hope, in the theme of this year's prize recipient, he doesn't sing everyday is like Sunday.

Geir Lundestad is right to protect free speech, but to suggest he "strongly" disagrees with Morrissey's comment is pandering to the fast food industry. Maybe he's afraid of getting sued by the fast food giants like Oprah got sued by the Texas slaughter kings.

Why is the reader of The Local being kept anonymous? There's nothing wrong with saying something anonymously if you could say it to the person's face, but that person wouldn't have the balls to say something so ignorant to Morrissey's face.

Fabian Stang should be recalled. To condemn an artist for making a true statement shows he has a vested interest in the fast food industry and thus, is not an impartial government officer. He's corrupt. And I'll be happy to say that to his face.

Facts wrong
"The Smiths’ song “Suffer Little Children”, a haunting tune about the Moors Murders, was criticised by victims of Myra Hindley and Ian Brady for exploiting the crimes"

No they were not. That was a fit up job by the press. FFS COME ON!
Moz was given support by some of the families.

Disagreeing with Morrissey does not make you a fascist. If Morrissey has the freedom to use the deaths of children to make his clod-hopping point, others have the right to challenge him. The mayor is not silencing him, more's the pity, he is refusing to invite him to another function.

If Morrissey feels so strongly about this issue where was his Sandy Hook statement? Why wasn't he comparing those victims to poultry? He'd have had far, far more publicity for his cause, which is his goal, isn't it? Why did he suddenly become so reticent?

How about...

"We all live in a murderous world, as the events at Sandy Hook have shown. But that's nothing compared to what happens in McDonald's and Kentucky Fried Shit every day."

That would have made a far bigger splash, and yet...

The difference? Money. At the time of Sandy Hook he was trying to flog tickets in the USA. That statement would have finished him in the States, and he knows it. Norway is a small market, so it doesn't matter to him. Either he believes in what he says or he doesn't. He can't pick and choose by territory, can he? Oh, he does.

His cynicism is shocking, almost as shocking as the naivety of those supporting him on these pages.

Many of us here said the Norway statement would come back to haunt him. He overstepped the mark by a distance, refused to apologise, and he deserves every ounce of the flak he is getting. He's putting himself up in front of six thousand people, not as I assumed, a few hundred invited dignitaries. We'll find out how many have forgiven him on the night, if he doesn't take the cowards way out and cancel.

Hey Norway, if you don't like Morrissey just stay home and chew on a salted fish log. "I wouldn't live there if you paid me."

Totally agree.

I'm really surprised Moz hasn't been shot or a least punched for some of his comments.

Maybe a left hook to his head may knock some sense into him.

Money is God in your World though. Why is it ok for corporations and governments to have no morals but Moz is expected to be the cleanest man alive?

I detect the usual bollocks from Barleycorn the Imposter.

Finally, we agree he's as immoral as the corporations and governments you despise but are too cowardly to take to the streets and overthrow because it might be dangerous.

Look on the bright side. If he cancels it won't be just dead children who are the chickens. He'll be a chicken.

Cluck, cluck!

Of course he is Barleycorn, he's keeping half of world starving and disease ridden.

What are you doing here again?

What other non-establishment figures do you prowl the net trolling? Sad bastard.

Actually, it's a little more involved. One of the relatives initially contacted the papers after he heard SLT playing on a pub jukebox, leading to a "ban this sick stunt" story in one of the tabloids. After that, Morrissey met with some of the family members and won them round. Presumably, he simply point out them that their suffering was nothing compared to what went on in Great British Burger and Wimpy on a daily basis, so they should just pull themselves the f*** together. And all was forgiven.

Now they don't want Morrissey at the NPP? Well, I really think they are doing it as a punishment for the comments he made about the massacre. I hope Morrissey don't care at all. That shows how square-minded and conventional most -if not all- people from Norway are.

Don't know who you are, but you seem pretty paranoid and delusional.

On the subject: rationally speaking what Morrissey said was correct. Slightly inconsiderate of course, but true. Like it or not. o7

Put the blame on the mayor and the author who made for a character assassination of Morrissey at that very popular comedy show,"Nytt på Nytt". In doing so they turned a large part of the norwegian population against him. I mean, most Norwegians hadn't heard about Morrissey before this. Celebrities in culture who knows who he is, are now belittling him as a "moper" who probably had "a bad childhood with bad parents" and The Smiths was a band listened to by some "few sad and depressed people in the 80's". This is the impression many Norwegians now have of Morrissey (not the fans, of course), thanks to Fabian Stang and the other contestants in the programme, plus commentators in mainly the main paper, Aftenposten.

No, the blame lies squarely with the person who said "We all live in a murderous world, as the events in Norway have shown, with 97 dead, though that is nothing compared to what happens in McDonald's and Kentucky Fried shit every day." It doesn't get any better with repetition, does it?

I'm sure at the time he said it, within a week of the incident, the Norwegian media was concentrating more on the events at Utoya. Now the Norwegian people are hearing what he said, perhaps for the first time, it seems a fair percentage are not very impressed, as is their right.

I think you should listen to what he actually said:

As you will hear, he said "worse things happens in...", not "that is nothing compared to what happens in...". Slight difference there.
