Will Johnny Marr's 'Call the Comet' outsell Morrissey's 'Low in High School?'

How many copies do you think Call the Comet will shift in week 1 (UK)?

Marr's new album has absolutely destroyed Morrissey's Low In High School, critically, with a 79% average review compared with Steve's dismal 59% (a career low).
But can he outperform Low in High School commercially, too?
First week sales are probably the best indication (and the info most readily to hand), and we'll have a good indication of those by Monday night.

Please note - figures are for 1st week sales in the UK.
Second option should say 'about the same as LIHS' which sold 25,000.

It may be critically better received, but that won't necessarily translate to better sales. Morrissey could record himself taking a shit and charge £35 for the privilege of hearing it, and there would still be fans who would swear it's the best thing he's ever done. This level of loopy devotion is bound to skew the figures.

True but the ability to inspire that sort of devotion with his music and persona is part of his art

All the reviews are by anti Moz ham-hocks FFS. The album should have been called
"the GREAT COMET CATASTROPHE"
None of the reviewers actually listened to the thing, its impossible to get through all of it.

Are sales figures indicative of how good it is?

You've just proved my point nicely :thumb:

Maybe but I don’t own anything but the albums. No singles no vinyl etc so i don’t think I’m in the demographic you think I am. It’s related to the question about do sales figures matter to how good it is. No it doesn’t but it does make a difference In how much impact it has which some can and do use as a measure for pop musics success

My comment was in response to it being 'part of his art' - the idea that he could turn in any old tosh and this would still be applauded, bought - and excused - by a sector of fans 'because he is an artist'. It was more a comment on the power of fan delusion, and how these people are complicit in the release of poor quality material, than the critical success vs. sales success argument.

I do think that his persona public image and how we think of him does influence the music we listen to especially pop music and that it takes skill to develop

You could say the same about Johnny Marr. It's beyond me how anyone can describe New Dominions as a great song. Also, Call The Comet might be quite good but it isn't nearly as great and fantastic as the reviews suggest.

I've noticed that a lot of dads on Instagram have received this album as a Father's Day gift. I wonder if that was a deliberate choice to release it this week - the right demographic and all that. Anyway, as more people hear it, they will want to buy it - it really is an excellent album.

I mean, there were those on this site who liked the "spoken word" videos for Whirled Piss. That alone should highlight how delusional some people are.

"Rise"

Now here they come
It's dawn of the dogs
They hound, they howl
Never let up
The fear is on
Call in all gods
Here they come everybody
Read or not

Got the fire if you feel it
And the heat turns on
Got the lighter, we fuse it
The day has come
Got the fate, can you feel it
Call in all gods
Here they come everybody
Ready or not

Fires are looming
Now look what they did
I see something
Do you see it?
Times won't change it
It ain't that easy
I sing in an arena
While you say yeah
Decide can you feel it
Your flames got a lid
I'll sing the [?]
While you sing yeah
You're the truth, you're the truth
You're the truth, you're the truth
You and I know
Destiny is rising

Got a prayer if we feel it
It says the day has come
Got a spirit if we need it
Get ready to run
It's the dawn of the dogs
Yeah it's an attack
Here they come everbody
Here come the pack

Words and Illusions
Now hear what they say
I'm feeling something
Can you feel it
Time won't change it
It ain't so easy
Rise to forever
Your friends got lit
You're the truth, you're the truth
You're the truth, you're the truth
Here I go
Destiny is rising

(Ahhh) Now we gotta live [x3]

The fires are looming
'Cuz look what they've done
I feel something
Do you feel it burn
Time won't change it
It ain't so easy
This light, can you feel it?
You first got lit
Signs and illusions
Now look what they did
I see something
Do you see it?
You're the truth, you're the truth
You're the truth, you're the truth
You and I both know
Destiny, we're rising

"Hey Angel"

Slow night ether
She calls out
"Come closer, a little more"
Good night dreamer
Calls "Come out"
Let's go a little more
Her will upon me breathes
And we'll blow a little more
Feel it, lose hold of control now
Burn up
Now here we come

Games in ether
She'll come back
Let's go a little more
Whisper double meanings
She slow talks a little more
Her kiss upon me
Breath and call out a little more
Her will upon me
Come to me like a ghost

Angel
Enter me more
Let's be dissolved
Ascender
I need more
Angel
Enter me more
Let's leave it all
This drug feels like love

Play in the night ether
Take control a little more
Feel the girl night dreamer
And burn up a little more
Her touch upon me
Gleams and holds out a little more
Her kiss upon me
Comes to me like a ghost

Angel
Enter me more
Let's be dissolved
Ascender
I need more
Angel
Enter me more
Let's leave it all
This drug feels like love

Angel
Enter me more
Let's leave it all
Ascender
I need more
Angel
Enter I need more
Let's be dissolved
This drug feels like love

"New Dominions"

If I could do anything
I'd burn up faster
I'd fast-track through into a new dominion
Don't go to no paradise after

I don't know why
It's understood
Fear and hate turn to lust
Only lovers left alive

If I could choose anything
I'd cascade faster
Take the fast light to the real dream
I won't go to no darkness after

I don't know why
It's understood
Fear and hate turn to lust
Only lovers left to die

Relieve the past
[?]
A new dominion
Yes, yes, yes...

"Day In Day Out"

Born with a question
Born with a future past
In my invention
Call me a natural act
Now is forever
Now is an old re-run
Call me too far gone
To the point of no return

Obsess to possess
The lifeline is altered
I was alone before I learned
Obsess to excess
Is all I wanna do and can
And the voice that calls us forever
Is the ghost of chance

Day in, day out
Coming upside down
Will hit the heart of me
Oh, mix me up
Coming this time round
Will hit the heart of me

Life is a museum
Mind is the scene of the crime
Always looking out
And always a crime of mine
Live in a camera live in a cinema
There is nothing more than thinking
Nothing more than thinking
Dream, scheme fast and live now

Day in, day out
Coming upside down
Will hit the heart of me
Oh, mix me up
Coming this time round
Will hit the heart of me

Day in, day out
Coming upside down
Will hit the heart of me
Oh, mix me up
Coming this time round
Will hit the heart of me

Day in day out
Coming this time around
And hit the heart of me
It hit the heart of me
It hit the heart of me

"Bug"

Hurry up quick, don't catch it
Spread it all around, outbreakin'
Infecting our lives, incubatin'
Fires multiply, replicatin'

Everybody feels the achin'
Population is sick and shaken
Can't think straight, mind's breakin'
And the world is bad enough, can't take it

(Ohhh)

Farm got took away
Took all our privilege
Nah nah no more (Eh)
Nah nah no more

Farm no good today
Took all our privilege
Nah nah no more (Eh)
Nah nah no more

Farm got took away
No more, no good today
Nah nah no more (Eh)
Nah nah no more

Farm no good today
Took all our privilege
Nah nah no more (Eh)
Nah nah no more

Everybody feels heart breakin'
Reactin' to the light at the [?]
Feels so cold, hearts racin'
Runnin' in our blood, contagious

Farm got took away
Took all our privilege
Nah nah no more (Eh)
Nah nah no more

Farm no good today
Took all our privilege
Nah nah no more (Eh)
Nah nah no more

Farm got took away
No more, no good today
Nah nah no more (Eh)
Nah nah no more

Farm got took away
Took all our privilege
Nah nah no more (Eh)
Nah nah no more

Farm got took away
Took all our privilege
Nah nah no more (Eh)
Nah nah no more

Farm got took away
Took all our privilege
Nah nah no more (Eh)
Nah nah no more

Farm got took away
Look what you did today
Nah nah no more (Eh)
Nah nah no more

Farm got took away
Took all our privilege
Nah nah no more (Eh)
Nah nah no more

Farm got took away
Took all our privilege
Nah nah no more (Eh)
Nah nah no more

Farm no good today
Took all our privilege
Nah nah no more (Eh)
Nah nah no more

Farm got took away
No more, no good today
Nah nah no more (Eh)
Nah nah no more

Farm got took away
Took all our privilege
Nah nah no more (Eh)
Nah nah no more

Farm got took away
No more, no good today

"A Different Gun"

Take a walk to the road
Feel the sidewalk glow
At the dead of the day
On the airy street
We're lying all alone
Now someone at risen dawn
And they don't even know

There was something right
There was something

Everyday is a different sun
Blown away by a different gun
Now we're holding onto everyone
To be warned by the heat
And we're taking every day that comes
Everyday from a different gun
Stay and come out tonight
Stay and come out tonight

Our sparks dream and fall
Fireworks explode
Do we fall on the beach?
Do we fall all alone?

There was something right
There was something

Everyday is a different sun
Blown away by a different gun
Now we're holding onto everyone
To be warned by the heat
And we're taking every day that comes
Everyday from a different gun
Stay and come out tonight
Stay and come out tonight

Now there's still a chance
That we don't even know
We're suns in some paradise

Everyday is a different sun
Blows away in a different gun
And we're holding onto everyone
To be warned by the heat
And we're taking every day that comes
Everyday from a different gun
Stay and come out tonight
Stay and come out tonight
