I still haven’t listened to California Son all the way through. No interest.

My list, after careful consideration:

1) Maladjusted (just love it; can’t explain why. The b-sides from this era are top notch, too)
2) Viva Hate
3) You Are The Quarry (so lush sounding)
4) World Peace Is None Of Your Business (very strong, especially when combined with the bonus tracks)
5) Vauxhall & I
6) Your Arsenal
7) Southpaw Grammar (prefer the reissue with the marvellous outtakes, particularly “You Should Have Been Nice To Me”)
8) I Am Not A Dog On A Chain
9) Low In High School
10) Years Of Refusal
11) Ringleader Of The Tormentors
12) Kill Uncle
13) California Son (though I adore “It’s Over” and “Brow Of My Beloved”)

So, the verdict is everyone loves Vauxhall and I.

I think people go gaga over it mostly for Now My Heart Is Full and Speedway. Great bookends.

Ringleader has over-performed. A miracle.

And if VAR was in, Maladjusted would be much higher up the table.

Good to see Maladjusted held in deserved high regard.

God this is tough and it always fluctuates to some degree. I usually don't like trying to rank an artist's new album until its about a year old to see what sort of staying power the songs have with me, but I'll give it a go.

I am not a Dog on a Chain is already on the beach.

Good to see Maladjusted held in deserved high regard.

Ammunition is my favourite track. I asked Moz if he’d ever do it live at a book signing a while back and he said they’d rehearsed it but it never made it to the main set unfortunately.

At the moment my ranking is looking like this:

1. Vauxhall & I
2. Your Arsenal
3. Viva Hate
4. Ringleader Of The Tormentors
5. I Am Not A Dog On A Chain
6. Years Of Refusal
7. Southpaw Grammar
8. You Are The Quarry
9. World Peace Is None Of Your Business
10. Maladjusted
11. Kill Uncle
12. Low In High School

However, I'll need to re-visit this in a few months. Once the album has properly settled.

If I was going to a desert island, it’s the LP I’d take. It strangely sounds slightly different and slightly better every time I hear it.

Though it doesn’t have the seamless quality of V&I it really does keep giving in every sense: given the opportunity to address the problem of the sleeve art with the rerelease, Morrissey blessed us with a cover equally odd.

And it has arguably his greatest ever song in Trouble Loves Me, and perhaps his two oddest in Roy’s Keen and Sorrow Will Come.

I was working abroad at the time, but I would’ve loved to have attended the Battersea gig c.1997. Was Ammunition not played there?

I love that one fan’s treasure is another’s trash. Trash is a strong word for a Morrissey album but relatively speaking, that’s what Maladjusted is to me. Part of it was the expectations. He was still not very far removed from his best work and then that album. Just a crushingly bad album to me. Other than the title track, which is great. I’ve tried to revisit it but I still just don’t like it at all. Ambitious Outsiders is okay though. ?

Which version of Maladjusted?
It would need to be the Legacy edition...despite Roy's Keen & Papa Jack sadly being the sacrificial lambs...& I love both those tracks.

Original UK version (without Sorrow) is perhaps the most rewarding, for me.
There isn’t a bad song on Vauxhall and there are many fantastic ones. Just so strong from start to finish.
For me, it vies with Achtung Baby for the best studio album of the 90s. I also think it’s better than any of The Smiths’ long players.
