‘Strangeways, Here We Come’ became The Smiths’ premature epitaph. Morrissey and Johnny Marr still feel it’s their best album.

Actually Morrissey thinks World Peace is his best album, and far as The Smiths go, Marr may think Strangeways is his best album, but Morrissey’s is Louder Than Bombs.

I do agree with this from the article:

Sadly, the fallout from the band’s demise overshadowed the fact that they’d bowed out with a fantastic record that should have opened their next chapter instead of providing their premature epitaph.

Definitely the start of a new chapter... it's just hard to picture what could have followed after perhaps a decent break from recording and touring.
