Couple of tracks - make up your own mind

' i don't dream about anyone.... except MYSELF '

made up my mind.

"It occurred to me that within popular music if ever there were any records that discussed marriage they were always from the female's standpoint, female singers singing to women. There were never any songs saying 'do not marry, stay single, self-preservation,' etc. I thought it was about time there was a male voice speaking directly to another male saying that marriage was a waste of time...that, in fact, it was absolutely nothing."

was it about Billy Mackenzie or was it Billy Liar? .....

Well, actually it was about someone named William. :o
I always imagined it to be about Billy Mackenzie. Such a great singer.
But now you got me confused.

As a matter of fact, I wouldn't be surprised at all if it isn't neither of them.
Our Moz likes a practical joke, referring to names and get people guessing and speculating about it.
Maybe it was just a nice fantasy and by mentioning the name William he got people all wind up.
Wouldn't be the first time and I can think of him (Moz) having a great laugh about it. :brows:

Still a great Smiths song with that brilliant title.
And that great first line: The rain falls down on a humdrum town.
And that brilliant Johnny Marr guitar-rif.
When you hear it you immediately see it and feel it.
And in two minutes everything that needed to be expressed was expressed. Not one note too much or too little.
What do you think Ketamine Sun?
Is is about Billy Mackenzie, or Billy Liar?
Of neither of them?
Cheers :thumb:

Have you seen Billy Liar? The song is like that film. And I can picture M singing this song to Billy as a way to comfort him and point him in the right direction as far as what to do with all the predicaments he gets into in that story/film. (the clip I posted I felt summed it up well)

The rumor (for that's all that it is) is an invention of the music papers. M (as far as I know) never came out and said the song was about or not about B.M. Though I can see M thinking the rumor was cute, unprovable and pretty much harmless so he didn't need/care to correct anyone about it's true meaning. I'm sure he felt he's already said enough on what it means to him quite clearly in the quote I posted in my first post.

So why 'William' and not 'Billy' ? Well it's just a better choice, it just sounds better when sung. Try yourself, sing the song with 'Billy' instead, what do you think? It's sometimes better that a word sounds right rather then it being correct or true to the story, I mean it's a sacrifice worth making as long as it feels/sounds right.

And yes a brilliant song! so original that you can call it.... strange.

it was an injoke and two pals having a laugh.

I heard that they had an encounter and Billy stole one of Morrisseys favorite shirts. And of course Billy Mackenzie wrote Stephenn you were really something .

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William,_It_Was_Really_Nothing

Stephen you're still really something
England has its only nervy
Whoa oh oh Stephen
I'll tell you something
Stephen let's bring down the curtain

You know the love god
You must change your heart
We're coming sweet stubble
Well we're nothin' but trouble
Stephen you're still really something

Stephen electric lady (electric lady)
Stephen was she here my baby
Whoa oh oh Stephen
I was once anorexic
Stephen I'm a reborn skeptic

On perks and pill purses
Of wise little Herse and as
Immature hours must tears to dispower
Stephen you're still really something

If I'm going down I'll pull you down with me
In alot of ways send me poetry
Would I be more attractive
If I prove that he's mine
He's still got this urge to be Valentine

Oh Stephen, turning it even
Stephen, no need for treason
Stephen, what's on the jukebox?
Stephen, you know about the fraud talk
Whoa Stephen, I thought I'd just mention
Oh Stephen, I resent your ascension

Did you take a laugh
And then hold me back
As if nothin' you'd talked from
Back and it's grown from

Stephen, you're still really something
Stephen, you're still really something

And If I'm goin' down I'll pull you down with me
In alot of ways send me poetry
Would I be more attractive
If I prove that he's mine
Well I still got this urge to be Valentine

Oh Stephen, you're still really something
Oh Stephen, you're still really something

Whoa
Did you take a laugh
And then hold me back
But a' nothing is wasted
That I can't disclose

Stephen, you're still really something
Ooh Stephen, you're still really something
Stephen, you're still really something
Oh Stephen, you're still really something
Ooh Stephen, you're still really something

actually I read it was a book or books that B.M stole. I think these lyrics weren't written /released until 1993(?), a long time coming.

'Stephen, you know about the fraud talk
Whoa Stephen, I thought I'd just mention
Oh Stephen, I resent your ascension'

could be... 'fraud talk'= it was really nothing.

and 'Oh Stephen, I resent your ascension' is very telling, at least he was humble enough to admit his jealousy.
