David Morrissey on Morrissey's "Autobiography"

An anonymous person writes:

David Morrissey, the "Walking Dead" actor who will be doing the audio version of Autobiography, was interviewed by the AV Club and was asked about the experience of recording the audio book. He gave what I think is a nice, intelligent answer.

The Walking Dead’s David Morrissey on keeping secrets and surviving as the Governor - The A.V. Club

Excerpt:

AVC: You recently recorded the audiobook version of Autobiography, by singer-songwriter and former Smiths frontman Morrissey. As a longtime fan of his, what were you most surprised to learn while reading the book?

DM: He’s always had that tag of “miserable Morrissey,” and he certainly can indulge that side of himself. But his humor is unbelievable. I had to stop reading many times because I was laughing so much. His cutting wit is second to none. Not that that surprised me—the consistency of it is amazing. There’s something Wildean about his writing—his putdowns are genius. It was just constantly jumping out at me. He’s somebody who’s in a place now where he’s very secure in his life and his music and I think that security and that belief in himself comes through in the book. He challenges many things in the book, many aspects of his past. There’s a lot of anger toward the music press, but in such a witty way. I hope I’ve done it justice, because it’s such a wonderful book.

I don't care if he took a break from reading it to eat an elephant burger, it's a good book and I want to hear him read it. I'm so tired of those that want to criticise Morrissey for things he can't do anything about. You blame him for a McDonalds advertisement and then you think it's wrong when he wants to bomb the scientists. Please make up your mind!

To clarify: he is a hypocrite for comparing the murder of Norwegian children as 'nothing' compared to McDonald's daily business of fast food, whilst simultaneously employing an actor who advertises McDonald's to read his ridiculous autophagographby. His cognitive dissonance in this hypocrisy is exceeded by that of his cult followers here and elsewhere. Yes, it's wrong (and illegal) to voice support for bombing scentists, but I don't recall Morrissey doing so. If you're talking about his words at Oxford, I was there, and he's prepared his trolling that night, unlike when he put his foot in his mouth with his career ending car-crash 'statement' about Oslo.

If he is heckled in Oslo, he'll flounce off and play the free speech martyr crap like he did at Madstock. If they ignore his troll and just *rolleyes*: in his delusional state, he'll probably take it as an endorsement of his original nonsense. Of course, he could always repeat the words verbatim and see how that goes down, if he still wishes to stand by them.

This 'lyndda' cult character is a right laugh. She breathlessly commends the sainted Morrissey as a protector of animals, neglecting to factor in he is a Dairy Queen, wears wool and leather, employs actors who voiceover McDonald's propaganda, and shows torture porn videos of animal slaughter live, even though they may well be of the cows, sheep, chickens and alpacas whose lives are spent providing him with the milk, cheese, eggs and luxury sweaters which are part of his lifestyle: I call that either ignorant stupidity or hypocrisy. In fact, it's pure Troll. He is a pseud who uses radical ideas as a USP to sell his tired, corporate Dad-rock cd's and shows. No doubt he imagines that his tiresome appropriation of Lou Reed's passing will result in an Xmas #1 if only the 'clueless consumers' can be guided to more sensible purchases, like his, by a massive corporate P.R and advertising budget like wot he thinks he can demand for his next 2 x CDs. They might be good, as might his next shows, or they might be boring crap. Who cares? I'll go to a show or two if there's nothing better to do, as much to watch the bizarre cult antics as to watch the delusional troll onstage: both fan and 'star' imagining that all there are part of their silly cult.

An actor by definition doesn't believe the script he is reading is real. David Morrissey can say whatever is written in that book without it having anything to do with him. Meanwhile I don't think hiring this actor makes Morrissey a hypocrite either, because I think to be a hypocrite there would have to be some expectation of ethics, morals, and an underlying consistent and coherent value system, and Morrissey does not have that. It's like saying a prostitute is a hypocrite because they don't care about their client personally. You don't expect them to.

except that isn't what David Morrissey says about his involvement. is it? he is emotionally invested in the project yet also takes money from McDonalds. Hippocrite, like his employer on this project, Morrissey.

No he doesn't Charlie. He and Johnny are making valid points about Morrissey. You should actually engage in the argument before you run out
of insults.

I disagree Peter. Whatever the subject they're looking their hardest to slag him off and never ever have anything positive to say. If Morrissey gave them a million pounds each they'd still find a negative. You can do that with absolutely anyone because nobody is perfect. It's horse shit at it's finest.

But Charlie, their arguments about Moz's hypocrisy have not been challenged.

They have been challenged lots of times but respond with insults and abuse. They don't want debate; in their minds, they are right, everybody else is wrong. Anybody who disagrees has their intelligence/education instantly questioned. BB and JB see hypocrisy everywhere... just not their own, of course.

Really? At the risk of repeating myself, Moz made a horrendous statement and excercises more than a little hypocracy.
I cannot see this being seriously challenged.
As far as insults go, you appear to give as good as you get.

Well, BrummieBoy has addressed the hypocrisy of Moz eating dairy too many times to count. And to this day, I have yet to see one counter argument or justification for why his consumption of dairy is acceptable and not hypocritical. BB is correct in pointing it out.

How can Morrissey be a spokesperson for animal rights, even going as far as saying slaughtering animals is worse than killing children because more animals are killed--some kind of twisted utilitarian argument, and yet, continue to consume dairy products? The dairy industry produces male calves that end up in those very same slaughterhouses. And so do the female milk cows once their utility as milk producers is exhausted.

This is what BB means by hypocrisy. If Moz consumed no animals products or byproducts, then he wouldn't be hypocritical when making the Norway comments. Doesn't mean the comments wouldn't still have been hurtful to the family members of the victims.

Also, Brummie believes Moz is being a hypocrite for hiring a person who eats meat, and worse still, is actually a paid spokesperson for the very corporation that Moz spoke out against in his Norway comments. And yet, Moz won't touch a salt shaker that was possibly contaminated by a meat eater. It is inconsistent. It is really laughable.

In other words, if you are going to stand for something and make such a fuss, then go all out--all the way. Do it right. Be vegan. And hire a vegan actor for the audio book.

Why not tackle these arguments? They are not being addressed, just overlooked. Even lynnda, who likes to chime in every once in a while, has failed to acknowledge these hypocrisies.

Bottom line is, Morrissey has disappointed Johnny and Brummie... and many others. He is not the subversive hero he set out to be. He does it halfway. He could have been THE ONE--the coolest, most intellectual, compassionate, witty artist who cares both about human rights and animals rights equally. And vegan to boot. A real role model. He failed them. They are a bit angry about it. I feel angry sometimes as well. It could have been so much more, right? But to ask them to let go, is silly. They still love his music. They just hold him to higher standards. Maybe they have more passion than most. My guess is, that is the case. They definitely are not indifferent.

Indeed. I had a splendid to and fro on Twitter with PETA over gelatine and leather. I looked at their leather 'factsheet' and found it to be riddled with misinformation and downright lies. I asked PETA three times if any of the people on their stamp set, to their knowledge, wore leather. They refuised to discuss it.

I agree with you and Brummie, that Moz should drop PETA and support more ethical and consistent animal welfare organizations... like the one you support.

You've read their other posts right? Barleycorn has no compassion for anything, if he wasn't picking on this he'd be picking on something else. Likewise with BB. Find us a positive post of any kind from these two. They're nothing but a pair of windbag charlatans.

My point is - does Morrissey wear leather shoes? If he does, he's no friend of PETA. Just read what they have to say on the matter, which, on some of the treatment and chemical points is so wrong, it's laughable.

That's a somewhat water tight response Charlie. You call them fools so you do not have to think about what they say.

I think about it, I think they're people pushing agendas. If people take a negative prejudice to every view they put forward then I'm going to struggle to see any value in what they have to say.

But Charlie, it's quite a clear cut position, hypocrisy on the subject of animal rights and vile comments about a massacre of children.
And if I may add my own gripe, his support for UKIP is very disappointing.

Yes. How can he wear leather and yet represent them???

I really DO wish he would acknowledge his dairy consumption and leather wearing. Explain why these things are OK, in his world. How does he rationalize these things?
