but that doesn't always matter. Same with Frank Sinatra.
Gene Pitney wrote Hello Mary Lou and it took Ricky Nelson to make it a classic. It's about doing things the right way. And having enough personality (and being hot )

in that time it wasn't nearly as common for singers to write their own material as it is now, don't really think any of the big stars did. having said that, he had a heavy hand in arranging and producing his songs-- which is why his versions of previously written/recorded songs have became classics.
