"When Morrissey turns up at the front door of Johnny Marr (Laurie Kynaston) at the film’s end..." WHA?! The reviewer seems to be a fan, so getting this founding fact flipped is bizarre to me....

England is Mine - The Times

Almost great musical biopic about the early years of Mancunian pop icon Morrissey. It's hamstrung, eventually, by the elusiveness of its subject.

*************

You don't have to possess an obsessive knowledge of the early life, musical influences and chart hits of the Mancunian pop icon Morrissey to appreciate England is Mine. But it helps. As it happens, I do (more than 30 years of mostly unwavering devotion in the tank), so perhaps I can comprehend the ambitions of the writer-director Mark Gill better than many.

The film attempts to describe the formative, entirely dull life of Steven Patrick Morrissey before he became the flower-flailing face of the Smiths and subsequently a globetrotting solo star (he is, bizarrely, very big in Mexico).

Trapped, like Morrissey, in the limited grimness of 1970s rain-sodden suburbia, with little narrative momentum (Morrissey moans a lot and wants to be famous, and that's it), it envisages biographical scenarios that might soon inform his classic songs.

There's the nightclub scene from How Soon Is Now ("So you go and you stand on your own/ And you leave on your own"), the maudlin walks from Cemetry Gates ("A dreaded sunny day/ So I meet you at the cemetery gates"), and the fairground altercations from Rusholme Ruffians ("A boy is stabbed/ And his money is grabbed").

Which is all lovely. And I know I had a blast. But if you're not a Smiths/ Morrissey devotee there can surely be only ambivalence. Watching someone incessantly scribble in notepads while complaining, "I'm sick of being an undiscovered genius," can get you only so far.

Tellingly, you are left with the impression that the rising star Jack Lowden has just done a pitch-perfect Morrissey impression, if not quite a characterisation. Morrissey has been an elusive figure all his life, and he has certainly eluded this film.

Unlovable? A new biopic of Morrissey, Britain’s controversial music icon - The Economist (Prospero blog)

"In England is Mine, a new biopic of Morrissey, Mark Gill fashions an odd portrait of the artist as a young misery guts. The film hones in on the singer’s formative years in Stretford, a town in Manchester, and as such features none of The Smiths’ music (Johnny Marr, the guitarist critical to the band’s sound, appears only briefly). It is a curiously low-key affair, shorn of the air-punching moments that constitute most music biopics’ bread and butter.....

....There’s time yet for a fuller-throated appreciation of the musician and his talents. But “England is Mine” does something else: it makes Morrissey seem human again. He emerges not as a mythical star, but as both a product of his environment as well as a man apart from it. It is a start."

England is Mine: Lifeless - Financial Times
by Nigel Andrews (2 out of 5 stars)

"England Is Mine is a British biopic about the young Morrissey. The singer, songwriter and Mancunian miserabilist needs a Mike Leigh to do him proper justice. Leigh would find the hope, pathos and transcendence in this one-time wannabe of eloquent woe, who seems (even now in retrospect) the least likely candidate for chart success in rock history.

Mark Gill’s film goes through the motions. It’s a work of lifeless competence, which may be worse than incompetence. At least in an accident something can catch fire. Here we get Jack Lowden with a wig and accent; lots of brand-recognition 1970s hit tunes (the Morrissey/Smiths songs weren’t released to the film); and much sub-Monty Python stuff, ponderously directed, about the aspiring young artist rebelling against the hard northern parents."

The account of his painful teenage years offers a new perspective on the singer.

Before he became frontman of The Smiths and a pop idol, Morrissey was once just a kid like any other according to Mark Gill's gentle and moving biopic.

England Is Mine review – a Morrissey mope-fest - The Guardian
by Wendy Ide

This biopic of the embryonic Smiths singer is hamstrung without the music of the band.

"...Jack Lowden does his best with a thankless role, but there is very little here to disabuse the growing belief that what the young Steven Patrick Morrissey most needs is a slap."

This is a horrible review. Not because it is negative but because how dismissive and flippant it is about depression. Thankfully Wendy Ide gets a slap herself in the comments section of her own article.

jesus. I was planning on seeing this soon, think I'll pass now. thanks.

Had a deja vu right now, reading your post.
Jesus thinks you are okay. :)
But wait a minute, starting to doubt the whole deja vu phenomenon.
Wasn't it something Moz wrote in one of his penpal letters to Robert Mackie?
It must have been. :o
For God's sake, where is the humour, the wit, in this movie?
Is this Moz? :ha-no:

Why is it that every time I click on a link on this site lately, I instantly regret my finger-to-the-trigger, controlled by no one and nothing, completely errant finger-pressing impulses.

Regret tastes like the sound of angels screaming, btw. In case anyone else feels the same and has any momentary trouble recognizing this rather particularly gruesome mouth-flavour. Sad clip, bad clip. And the angels continue to scream in dismal, abject horror. Because there is no salvation.

Isn't this what is called an oxymoron? I like them!
It also reminds me of people seeing words, characters, numbers in colours, tasting with their ears, hearing with their toe-nails as was recently discussed here, forgot the name for that phenomenon.
Countthree knows. :thumb:

think I'll see it anyway, maybe some bud will help me suspend disbelief, or I'll just be laughing my head off through the whole thing.

Also Scanty and Quando if you're reading... that post in the other thread is not me singing... just a bad joke directed toward that poster I was replying back to.
Yes, we knew that, K-Ket-Kitty! But you are cute to own up! :lbf:
