Fiona Dodwell: "Morrissey reflects on 'the horror of 2020' after departure from BMG" (November 17, 2020)

Morrissey reflects on 'the horror of 2020' after departure from BMG.

BMG should surely be begging for Morrissey's hand for every future release he will produce.
For there lies true diversity: committing, with loyalty, to an individual who thrives as completely himself in a sea of conformity.

FWD.

I agree. How is he expected to expand the audience base if he's never played on radio? DJs these days seem to be thicker than ever. I think Moz is as much a victim of overall dumbing down of music as much as political correctness. The sheep don't want to have to think. Just give them a beat with inane lyrics and expletives.

The day before yesterday, Shaun Keaveny played Girlfriend In A Coma on this BBC6 Music afternoon show. Afterwards he repeatedly said " Thanks Johnny!"

Well that is pathetic then. Not acknowledging Morrissey is just....well, I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again - it’s woke virtue signalling.

It’s a rollercoaster. It would only take some Smiths revival—even if only through a film soundtrack or a popular cover—and Morrissey’s stock would be through the roof again.
I don’t know, Mark Ronson did that ‘Stop me’ cover a decade or so back & there was godawful John Lewis (I think) advert with ‘Please, please, please’ & I didn’t notice it really raising his profile.

I’d like to be wrong though.

On that point, what is this current craze of getting some weedy voiced female singer covering classics for adverts? There was a New Order one recently, utterly awful. In my opinion.

Dodwell again with her attempts to get Morrissey to f*** her. It ain't happening love.

I think the Stop Me cover was more of an effect of Morrissey’s popularity at the time. He did begin involving that song in his own set, following the success of Ronson’s effort—to accept a level of new interest presumably.

From my experience, just when everyone agrees it’s all over—that’s the moment it definitely isn’t.

Fair enough, I didn’t know that about the inclusion on the set-list actually.

And you’re right on the second point as well; a similar thing happened about 14 months ago. A prime minister had a -40 majority in the house, couldn’t win a vote, a large group of rebels were close to stopping a democratic referendum being honoured. They were squealing in delight, it was over, it was over.

I can’t quite remember what happened next...🤔

Actually in that point I agree with dodwell.
The music industry is hugely ageist. Just look at radio 1 and their refusal to play Madonna once she turned 60, and now she sells far less than before.
Older singers never get the same exposure and radio play or promotion. Its always the young or up and coming.
Radio 1 is defo a problem as its insistence for a number of years to effectively be a dance music station is ridiculous, it's a national station that should have a broader remit. Thing is, go back to the 90's and it was the best station in the UK, at some point great DJ'S were replaced and the music policy was turned on it's head, bit of a disgrace really.

"One only has to look at the singles chart to realize that, in fact, artists like Morrissey are the ones continually underrepresented."

Fiona Dodwell must be one of the thickest people ever to call herself a writer . The charts are all about sales and streams. Artists like Morrissey are underrepresented, because not enough people listen to them. I can't find any skiffle or opera either in the singles chart.
Thing is the Singles charts now aren't music in the true sense, it's more or less a specialist dance chart that has for whatever reason become a bit of a closed shop to any other genre of music. Certain radio stations have absolutely contributed & conspired to create this hellhole of a chart situation and to any real music fan it's wrecking the chance of artists getting airplay & recognition because they can't compete with thousands of daft kids buying 'DJ Bullshit featuring Rita Pakora' singing the worst song ever heard.

Yeah pretending to enjoy The Smiths exclusively because of Johnny's playing is the new trend. Nobody ever cared about the lyrics anyway, right? Especially with Girlfriend In A Coma...

Morrisseys fifth most popular song on Spotify is back on the chain gang and spent the day in bed was also popular both bmg releases. He’s not done so poorly while on the label
Exactly and it's worldwide sales over the course of the whole contract to be considered not just the UK for example. BMG in Spin magazine online complimented Morrissey's successful, quality three album run, so his time with them was decent from their point of view.

No it won't, not for his solo stuff. It will only happen if Steve retracts his support for extremist far-right politicians and groups. Having just made derisive comments about the importance of 'diversity', his stock will (if anything) sink even lower.

It isn't. The actual press has been kinder. And he has said nothing about diversity. It wasn't in quotes.

The problem remains the same - he's not engaging in any way with the media & his social isn't professional.

Not true, Morrissey has a massive back catalogue. Without adequate promotion, there isn’t the consumer focus to make an impact on the charts. But significant Morrissey interest remains. Certainly enough to get him back in the charts.

BMG intentionally tanked Dog: an LP with at least 3 (possibly 4) potential top twenty singles on it.
You're f***ing delusional. How old are you? Late-40s?

I was told I was delusional c.2000, for expressing a similar faith.

Johnny Rogan has also noted that Morrissey can never be written off. He always finds a way.

No one is debating that Morrissey will end up in another studio with another lousy set of songs to be released on another label. But to listen to his last album and authoritatively state that there are at least 3 top-20 singles on it is as out-of-touch as it gets. I think you truly have no idea what the modern musical landscape looks like.

In a decent, post Brexit world there were. He should have released it next year🇬🇧
