Gail Shea spokesperson responds to Morrissey's statement about Canadian seal hunt

A spokesperson for Gail Shea has responded to Morrissey's comments :

Morrissey attacks Fisheries Minister Gail Shea in blog post claiming ‘Canada’s sorry image is due entirely to its seal slaughter’ - National Post

Excerpt:

A spokesperson for Shea has responded to Morrissey’s statement, saying his comments “reveal a total ignorance of the Canadian seal hunt.”

Anyone who takes a careful look at the seal hunt will see that it is humane, sustainable, and well-regulated,” minister spokesperson Sophie Doucet said in an email to the Post. “In fact, the process used in the seal hunt was designed by international veterinary experts, and is the most stringent of any wild animal hunt in the world.

This is clearly just another case of a millionaire celebrity, desperate for a hobby, shamelessly regurgitating misinformation and myths that fringe animal-rights groups have been pushing for years. In the future, I would urge Mr. Morrissey to consider the impact that his ignorant and inflammatory statements have on the livelihoods of thousands of hard-working men and women in rural communities."

Despite the love, we do live on a murderous planet,
as you will have seen in the last few days in Norway.
Murder, murder, murder.
Really, every single day worse things happen in Kentucky Fried Shit and McDonald's.
Murder, murder, murder, murder, murder.

I think he’s genuinely horrified by what happened in Norway. At the same time, he’s frustrated that people keep ignoring the more systematic forms of violence. He was sad and frustrated and this came out of his mouth. Now, I may be projecting, but I’m pretty sure this is how he felt and I can relate to that (because that's how I felt.)

Putting aside the opportunism of Morrissey's commentary on Utoya, there are other issues to consider. Even within the slaughter of beings for factory farm and 'fast' food protocols, there are unexamined hierarchies of oppression. I'm uncomfortable with comparisons to Genocide and The Holocaust of WW2, in both 'fast food' and the Harp Seal slaughter, as the goal is not 'genocide' or 'speciescide' but the permanent enslavement of sentient beings in perpetuity for human pleasure as food or clothing or medicine/aphrodisiacs. Perfume for musk based perfumes. Etc.

Even in fast-food there is are issues of Gendercide within the slaughter. Most male chickens and calves are killed at birth or shortly after. Feminists who eat slaughter/torture food products might want to subject their diet to an Intersectionality analysis along lines of gender Privilege across species. Mind you, given the fate of female chickens and cows, I'm sure most of them envy their dead male counterparts. The likely answers come from economics. Anyone looking for optimism on this front could usefully look towards American entrepreneurs and activists like Ethan Brown, Joshua Tetrick and Josh Balk. People who are actually trying to change the world for the better rather than just use shock-outrage troll slaughter porn images like Morrissey to get face-time.

"We’re Greedy (in a good way) We want all of the good and none of the bad. We want to eat delicious meat but we don’t want any of the bad stuff that goes along with it. Is that too much to ask? Well no, actually. Not since we created real meat from plants. Brilliant, right?

Time To Step Up Now it’s time to make a real difference. We want to reduce the world’s consumption of animal meat by 25% by 2020. Massive, we know. But it would do wonders for human health, for the environment, for conservation of natural resources and for animals. It’s worth a fight.

Join The Mission This is where you come in. Reduce your meat consumption and tell the world. Even if you’re already eating less meat, you can help us spread the word and make a real difference. Together we can build a world that’s zero downside and all delicious upside."

In the early 80s, "Meat Is Murder" was a profound affront to Carnism, now re-hashing it without factoring in the cruelties of dairy farming just seems offensive. As does eating in upscale Carnist temples of wealth and privilege, even if there's the occasional karmic kick-back in Lima, Peru. How anyone can take Morrissey's complaints about the smell of meat at a music festival seriously when he openly boasts of eating in uber-expensive restaurants that serve meat is beyond me. It's time to move beyond his trite, banal world view. Time to move Beyond Meat. And beyond Eggs and Dairy too.

hey TBT, why not smile once and prove ur an actual human being

So in your estimation, and following the irrefutable shaming Viva Hate just handed you
umm, I have not been shamed at all, for that required feeling ashamed, where as I am far past that, and trolls like you aren't gonna change that in 2014, so sorry
anyways, anybody read

Shaming is an action. The fact that you don't have the ability to feel shame doesn't mean that you haven't been shamed. And I hear you teach English? With lots of emoticons I imagine.

From Wikipedia: A condition or state of shame may also be assigned externally, by others, regardless of one's own experience or awareness. "To shame" generally means to actively assign or communicate a state of shame to another.

A "sense of shame" is the consciousness or awareness of shame as a state or condition. Such shame cognition may occur as a result of the experience of shame affect or, more generally, in any situation of embarrassment, dishonor, disgrace, inadequacy, humiliation, or chagrin.

Yeah, and a person can be shamed by his/her fundamentalist Christian parents for being gay. S/he can chose to be affected by their shaming or not. Most would argue s/he has nothing to be ashamed of. Maybe s/he will agree. Just because there is intent to shame by someone or some group does not mean the target will or should experience shame.

FBE: Robby has no ability to feel shame, and you know this because? Because he is not affected by the shaming done by a small group of morally bankrupt trolls on a message board?

Experiencing shame can help one grow and change for the better. I think we should be open to what the shamers are saying. But we also must look at who the shamers are. Not all shaming is legitimate or motivated by good intentions. It may be without merit--based on hatred, bigotry, revenge, thrill seeking, sadism.

I do think I can honestly say that the intent to shame we witnessed recently was of the sadistic kind--done by hateful bigots, hell-bent on revenge.

He has already grown and changed. The three shamers are still playing in the sandbox and will be doing so twenty years from now. They are spiteful, unforgiving, hateful creatures who lack moral compasses and RBEs.

By torch bearing sadists, no less.

It all comes down to credibility. If a Judge/Jury in a Court Of Law convict you of a crime it's appropriate and sensible to feel shamed. Provided, of course, that you're not being convicted on the basis of some irrational societal 'voodoo' in which case the appropriate response is to denounce the illegitimate sentence as bogus 'voodoo'. "To Kill A Mockingbird" woke me up to all this as a child. Not all members of citizen courts are to be taken seriously whether on jury service or when they set themselves up as 'the court of public opinion' on an online forum or drunk on a barstool. I find the following current example of "torch bearing sadists" particularly illuminating:

"Homophobic Ku Klux Klan leader arrested for having sex with cross-dressing black male prostitute"

http://www.independent.ie/world-new...sdressing-black-male-prostitute-30224757.html

Some people 'present' to the world as voices of moral authority yet are later revealed to be extremely troubled as in this case of a disturbed delusional 'Grand Dragon' of a racist organisation. Whenever anyone sets themselves up as 'morally superior' I'm always intrigued. There are very few taboos which nearly everyone agrees on so it's possible for almost everyone to claim moral superiority over everyone else on almost every topic. From the most trivial issue of online 'debate' to the most profound existential questions of the planet's future. From trivial feuds on a forum to middle-class pop stars claiming the high moral ground, to extremities of political intolerance: when someone sets themselves up as judge and jury, in general you know they have some "issues".

Obviously, Morrissey is lights years away from the delusions of this 'klansman', but he reveals some of is own issues and insecurities when setting himself up as moral arbiter over Canada and the seal hunt. Seals were preyed upon in 'nature'. Natural predation of harp seals by sharks and polar bears has now been disrupted by human interference in the cycle of predator and prey. However, I doubt that that a harp seal being eaten by a shark or a polar bear suffers more than when culled by a human. What I find morally repugnant is that the humans involved in this cull seem to be doing it for pleasure, not survival. Unlike the shark and the polar bear.

What I find morally troubling about Morrissey's statements on the cull is that he seems to find pleasure in setting himself up as a moral arbiter, yet lacks insight into the effects of his own lifestyle on the very same issue. If the scientific consensus on climate chaos is right, then air travel is part of the mix that is destroying polar ice habitats. And playing at the Nobel Peace Prize concert in Norway without denouncing their status as the main market for Canadian seal fur suggests Morrissey's attempt to 'voodoo shame' Canada is utterly ineffectual gesture politics at best, self-serving publicity seeking at worst. Is Morrissey operating from a FBE or a RBE? Or a mixture of both? Like everybody else? On what basis does he claim moral superiority? Celebrity? Wealth? Intellectual prowess?

Are you suggesting that I'm an actor? And that my 'persona' here is some sort of comedy role-play?
I am a serious intellectual. Just like Morrissey is a 'serious intellectual'. He's not taking the piss either, is he?

^^^ Don't hold your breath.

Your post inspired me to ponder the art and science of shaming. You might enjoy this post. Or not.

I enjoyed your post. I wonder who's conscious of using 'shaming' strategies and who's on zombie autopilot? I think a lot of this stuff is quite a serious cry for help/affirmation/acceptance. Misguided, but hopefully by dumping their psychic toxins online they are enabled to live productive lives IRL. I deffo think Moz is often crying out for acceptance/validation from a prison of sybaritic loneliness. He must sense that many around him aren't exactly giving him reliable feedback, so his outbursts on TTY is his message in a bottle. Unfortunately, the only response he gets is the echo chamber of the media, which is scarely more reliable than the troll Judge Judy/jury scenarios here.

Seems strange to me that you're marketing your post on "shaming" to a man who takes immense and loquacious pleasure logging in to solely SHAME Morrissey every given opportunity.

Morrissey shames himself by inexpertly trying to shame others for behaviours he replicates. If you're a beef cow or an obese dairy heffer, it's all the same in the abbatoir. It doesn't matter if you die for a Jamie Orrible steak or a dairy ice-cream/cappucino. When Morrissey declares he has made his lifestyle congruent with his agenda to shame others, I'll adjust my frequency.

Enjoy the forthcoming shows in Cali.

Great insight. I think in the case of the Shamers here, all, with the exception of one, are on autopilot. The other knows exactly what he is doing, imo.

Message in a Bottle. Ah, makes me think of the great classic...

Marketing? No, sharing. Did you read it? Did you see where I said we are all guilty of shaming? Some more than others. Morrissey is the King of Shame. As opposed to being the King of Pain... or maybe the King of Pain IS the King of Shame. I think Brummie and Sting are onto something. Oh wait, my siggy says this as well.

so it's conscious with you. what's it a cry for in your case? or does the deliberate awareness void that theory?
