I think, coming from different ends of the political spectrum this is something we can agree on. It was so obviously rigged, didn't really matter that the main march of over a million people was completely peaceful, they only needed a minor fringe to break away and do something stupid (with a little help) and gave them the reason they needed to start their purge. This is why whoever advised Trump that this march would be a good idea needs to give themselves an uppercut (or maybe the more conspiratorial side of me might say, perhaps Trump was 'encouraged' to move forward with this bad idea.)

Many on the Left are praising this as all good stuff, but failing to see the long term consequences. it is Emily Ratajkowski of all people who is warning fellow Progressives that this actually isn't a big win, but rather a slippery slope and she is taking heat for it. What happens when a Progressive populist comes along, who goes hard at the establishment (think Bernie with balls) the same way that Trump has? They will simply silence him/her and when Progressives complain they will simply site precedence. Don't think it won't happen because it will. This is a great win for the establishment and the continuation of uniparty rule in DC.

In the end, there can be no genuine opposition to the neoliberal hegemony. They might keep libertarians around for a fake opposition. They will allow you to be in favor of EVEN MORE corporate power and EVEN MORE austerity. They will allow you to criticize the establishment for not being committed enough to those things to give the illusion of choice and open debate.

White nationalists and old school class-first Marxists (not Antifa, BLM) are the only significant truly anti-establishment forces in America. QAnon and BLM, while many times larger do not fundamentally oppose the basic premises of the neoliberal regime.
The only reason the establishment hasn’t shut down the Marxists sooner is because they drew support away from the Alt Right. They have similar target demographics and the Marxists were the lesser evil.

Democrats have a tendency to rehabilitate the last Republican in order to demonize the current Republican. They hated Reagan but then rehabilitated him to demonize George W. Bush ("Reagan at least had an uplifting message!"). They've recently rehabilitated George W. Bush in order to demonize Trump ("at least Bush wasn't racist"). Anti-Bush hysteria was nearly as intense as the current anti-Trump vitriol. But I'll be damned if the Dems have not rehabilitated him to be the example of a not-so-bad Republican too. They did it with McCain. He was a bloodthirsty war hawk but now he's "one of the good ones". Romney too. In 2012, he wanted to starve children and minorities but now he is a "good Republican"
The current Republican is always the most evil Republican of all time, unlike those "honorable Republicans" of yore.

Eventually, there is going to be a guy who is ideologically Trumpian but actually means it. When that day comes, they'll be talking about how Trump wasn't so bad and at least spoke up for the working class and blah, blah, blah.

Trust me. It WILL happen.

Yes it will happen and I'll go one step further and tell you how they will do it. However comes along from the Right that shows any type of grassroots popularity they will say is more dangerous than Trump because they are smoother and less obvious about their intentions. They'll label them 'Trump with charm' or something similar and then admit that at least with Trump you knew where he stood on issues because he was direct.

And they will mourn for the days of Trump because at least he was open and honest about his intentions and thus not as 'dangerous' as..............fill in the blank as to who comes next.

Marches always have a violent fringe - anyone arranging a march knows that & should be careful to distance themselves from potential trouble.

Alt-right & far right social media has been actively encouraging violence & spreading disinformation for years. Of course Qanon is going to attract unhinged people because only someone who has lost touch with reality & their ability to fact-check would believe in Qanon.

It's happening on the left too.

It's always happened.

But it's made much worse by the way the internet functions. Algorithms, likes, RTs, sharing, gamification, being able to monetize accounts, memes... etc.

I don't approve of censoring ideas - or dropping people from their record labels or cancelling book deals - but they do need to tackle the way people are becoming addicted to propaganda. And that's being hindered by most politicians either not understanding the internet or wanting to use it while thwarting their rivals, which is why they settle for account purges.
