Jack Lowden will portray the early life of Morrissey in "Steven"

British entertainment columnist Baz Bamigboye writes the following article about a new movie based on the life of our Moz ,"Steven"

Do you think he looks like Morrissey?

BAZ BAMIGBOYE: Jack's the lad to play Morrissey in new film called 'Steven' - Daily Mail

Excerpt:

Jack Lowden, one of the dashing stars of War & Peace, will portray the early life of the ‘Pope of Mope’, Morrissey until the moment he ditched his Christian name in a new film called Steven.

Lowden, who played soldier heart-throb Nikolai Rostov in the television drama that gripped the nation over the winter, will explore the creative and social forces that led the singer to form The Smiths in the early Eighties.

He looks nothing like him and is too old to play a young Morrissey.

Agree with you. I mean, his look is not everything. Moz' voice and his mannerisms are equally (if not more) important. We have to wait to see if he can manage that one. But a little bit resemblance would be nice. Unfortunately there isn't any, not even a sparkle in the eyes :(

"Lowden told me he learned how to sing at the Academy, which will help when he has to perform This Charming Man and other numbers from the The Smiths back catalogue in the movie."

Considering this movie is only about Moz's life BEFORE joining The Smiths, then no, he won't be singing those songs in it.

It'll be the performance that is the key not the look. The Steve Jobs film springs to mind.

Not sure how they think they're going to get the rights to the music if the film really is, as previously reported, 'unauthorised'.

Hopefully there will be information on the entire cast soon. Will be interesting to see who is in the movie and which actors will play them. People who have to be in it, imo, are his mother, father, sister and Nannie, Linder, James Maker, Anji Hardy, Jon Daly, Simon Topping.

There will be no Smiths music as it's the pre Smiths years who will be covered in the movie. And even if there would be Smiths songs in it they would have sorted the rights proplem out by now as they begin shooting in a few weeks.

The fact he's titled the film 'Steven' says it all really. Even casual fans knows that's just the wrong thing to do. I suspect it will be lightweight fluff but am happy to be proved wrong.

p.s. I guess if the film is based only on the pre-Smiths days then perhaps the 'Steven' makes sense. But only if they do a sequel called 'Morrissey'.

Sam Esty Rainer has a look of Moz. He might be a better choice!! He'd have all the mannerisms too after spending so much time with his Live Uncle.

It's a very good, qualified team behind this movie and Jack Lowden is a very serious and promising young actor. He's far from lightweight, so I don't really know how you come to this conclusion.
