James Maker makes statement re: "England is Mine"

Statement: 'ENGLAND IS MINE' (film)

According to the trailer of 'England Is Mine', Morrissey was an autistic, retiring creature with both curly hair and a natural crimp, who had to be physically pushed into becoming a singer by a well-meaning friend (one who did not actually communicate with Morrissey throughout The Smiths' success). Worse, they have put him in a green duffle coat and given him not one line of the Morrissyean wit we have all come to know. It is not a biopic, but historical fiction. A strange move, considering that those formative years have been so abundantly well-documented.

I knew him then, and I knew the house at 384 Kings Road. Morrissey’s mother should sue the filmmakers on their misrepresentation of her curtaining, alone. But the fact is, this is not Morrissey. The premise that if Morrissey could be a singer, then anybody could, is disingenuous, and rather insulting to his original talent as an artist.

At the time, and previous to the formation of The Smiths, Morrissey had very few close friends. This is documented in Morrissey’s memoir, ‘Autobiography’, and my memoir, ‘AutoFellatio’. I do not appear in the film, and characters who did not exist in real life are invented by the film-makers.

I am relieved not to be included, because if they can portray the protagonist as a person with crimped hair who relies upon guiding hands on shoulders, to thrust him through life’s revolving doors, then I am merely someone who, miraculously, managed to venture further than the 'NO BALL GAMES' sign posted adjacent to my bedroom window.

Ouch!

Maybe you can't blame people generally, but people who present themselves as biographical filmmakers might be a different matter.

That said, I think there's a limit to how far you can judge a film from watching a trailer.

Perhaps but a lot is also gonna be taken from the words of the subject about his own experience and it's hard to fault the writers for this as morrissey himself has many times described his young life as anti social reclusive and insecure with periods of depression and gloom. How many times have we heard that marr showed up on his door to save him from this trap. To hear James tell it morrissey was a maverick man about town. A mighty joe with his obvious destiny for musical fame written all over his face for everyone to see

Where did he say that Moz was a maverick man about town?

Yeah. Or maybe, you know -and bear with me; I know it's a stretch- somebody who was actually there is calling bullshit on a crap film that is capitalizing on somebody else's legacy without any official endorsement or involvement from the people at the heart of the narrative.

But let me guess: "oh do sod off, you thick c***, etc etc."

What a pile of pretentious sixth-form drivel. What has happened to you Brum? It is probably best not to mention "Morrissey's strangulated prose" whilst successfully massacring every aspect of the English language in a single post.

What a day...WeirdUnclePeter blocked by his own site (David, don't take this away from him...it's all he has left!), Brum clearly in the midst of some sort of breakdown...it almost makes you wish for the return of Bullshit Benny. Almost.

A desperate attempt to avoid the issues I raise, similar to that of the Japan-based expat troll but more wind-baggery. I am a gifted writer. Morrissey isn't. James Maker isn't. Deal with it, honey.

This is probably true but you can't really blame people for thinking of morrissey as a retiring inhibited person when he himself says things like
"I literally never, ever met people," he told James Henke in Rolling Stone. "I wouldn't set foot outside of the house for three weeks on a run." To Spin magazine, Morrissey admitted, "There was no sense of frivolity in my young life at all, ever. There was no such thing as going crazy, or getting drunk, or falling over, or going to a beach…. Everything in my life was just hopelessly premeditated" in this video he in his own words says I never had a social life I never left the house

Given Mr Maker's claims to have been his teenage friend, this is all quite obviously bullshit.

"Claims"? Are you stupid? Do you read anything? James was Morrissey's best friend, you nobody.

Steady on there. There is enough hate in the world already. Skinny is entitled to his opinion.
I'd say the filmmakers would love for Moz to release a statement saying either he loves or hates it. The last thing they'd want is no reaction.

And I'm entitled to mine. The only opinion he ever has to offer is hate and nothing else. Why is he still here? Truly...he is poison to this website.

Hi Ed,
Just for aesthetical reasons I decided to rate your post informative.
Now the major part of the ones available are nicely arranged underneath your post. Haven't seen that for a while!
I still had the option to rate it positively so grabbed it immediately.

clearly he hasn't seen the film ... interesting time to plug the re-release of his book though

Clearly you don't know Morrissey's story. James was a key and influential figure. Not including him, is absurd. But go on, go ask Dale Hibbert about Morrissey, he'll tell you EVERYTHING including Morrissey's favorite Shoeshine.

James sounds like all the locals I met over the years who described Morrissey in a way far from what his fans describe him as. I guess if you have actually known someone you become touchy to how that someone is portrayed by others.

Making a film about Morrissey is like opening a can of worms and no other fans in the world have such strong opinions on him.

Morrissey has been very honest about who he is and what he is, the movie is ridiculous.

The filmmakers didnt have the rights to use neither the music nor Morrissey's words for the film which in part would explain the absence of 'Morrissey's wit'

Of course. The only one around here who is Morrissey.......is Jose Maldonaldo!

Hmmmm. So James doesn't like the trailer. Not sure I do either. But the film was always going to be divisive. Personally I don't see the need for this film. They are bound to get more wrong than they get right. That said, I'm sure some people will love it. I'll delay judgment until I see it (probably on tv when it finally arrives). I don't think its fair to judge a film on its trailer.
I hate to even consider this, but could there be sour grapes from James because he isn't featured in the trailer/film?

Doubt it. I think James is very content with who is and where he is. He's had a very interesting and successful life, many cannot say this. I wonder how you would feel if this guy played you in a movie?
I think there is a need for the film. Those were fascinating times and the basis, actually, of The Smiths. After all, James Maker Gided The Ripper, if you will, and if you morons would merely pay attention...

There won't be any money made on the film as it will be pirated with impunity. They should've tried to work with Mozzer, so fail on so many levels.

I mean, for God's sake, Morrissey was friends with Howard Devoto, is that even f***ing mentioned in the film? Kind of important, a little.

Seems a little bent out of shape for a lot of little pointless concerns. Curtains and hair. We've all seen the Marc Bolan long hair pics where it looks crinkly or wavey. If you wanna see pics of morrissey in a duffle coat just google morrissey is a duffle coat cause they exist. I also find it hard to find fault with a writer of an indie film for not being as witty as morrissey was/is (at least what James saw from the trailer alone). He's gonna be hard to compete with. I don't know what he sees in the trailer but I didn't see anything that said he was an average anybody who got pushed into being a singer. The trailer makes him out to be a fairly unique odd character and we've plenty of morrissey interviews where he describes himself as a reclusive person with few friends at odds with everyone around him. The biggest flaw I do admit is that James isn't represented in the film but I can't agree with much else he says about the trailer. He seems like he's being a bit of a hater

I think James is being honest, you mongoloid, he was f***ing THERE, for f***'s sake. He would know.

Well put. I've also seen a couple of reviews talk about three strong female characters so including James Maker wouldn't really help that. Also, its not a documentary, they have artistic license.

Artistic license about a real person? Are you joking? Are you stupid? Yeah, let's just make a movie about how Bowie was really a woman, yeah, let's do that.:paranoid: What planet is this? Tell Sharon to put the kids to bed and beam me up, Major Tom!

James Maker is f***ing great!
Brilliant version.
I can understand Moz being influenced to some degree and when I hear this song I hear "something" , can't put it in the right words that is in a similar veine.
Is it the way he sings, the tone of his voice, the way he changes the lower singing to the higher strophes of the song?
Dunno.
Great artist!

BOYCOTT 'ENGLAND IS MINE' !!!

But the problem is you never get any answer as to why someone, somebody, presumably the financial investors, think it is box office poison. And at the same time other financial investors in other films don't think it is box office poison to produce and market films that are gruesome, horrific, violent, sexualized and pornographic to the core. I am not pleading for censuring but it seems so utter hypocritical to me. They should get their taboos right.

Or is it true that the mass public have their own taboos and likes and that is were the cash is?

I haven't seen the film yet but despite some of the negative reactions is there really a reason for a boycott?
I get the impression from the trailer and the reviews some of the aspects of the life of young Moz are neglected or pushed aside.
Like his friendship and affection for James Maker.
How fictitious and historical not factional is that?

Nevertheless, I am still curious and there were some good things in the trailer.
How do you want to create the momentum for the boycott?
Don't say you were only joking! :(

You can watch it, just get a pirated copy. Or do whatever you want, you're not in chains. ;)
