Hi

Does anyone know any japanese artists that sounds like the smiths or morrissey, or have them as inspiration in their music making?

I'm Japanese, but not into domestic music scene, can't think of any Japanese musicians who are inspired by Smiths/Morrissey.

Possibly Cornelius (aka Keigo Oyamada) who used to be a member of a legendary guitar pop band Flipper's Guitar, but his style has been changed since he became a solo artist.

King Leer who lives in Tokyo might give some of his opinions.

You know, I don't know, but I've thought about it many times!

So I just did a simple search for 「音楽 スミスっぽい」and found an interesting artist in a few minutes:

Good play on "His Master's Voice," decent 80s sound, Moz-like vocals, but nonsense lyrics (according to the artist himself).

They/he sounded good.

cornelious when he played in flippers guitar sounded more like the song elephant stone by stone roses, or like orange juice.

a very diverse sound.

i like japanese music, and in a book called japanese school girl inferno there is some text about some typ of recordlabel in the 80s that was supposed to be very influential on the indie scene.

in the book scandal and passion the author did talk about an japanese singer wo impersonates people and also include morrissey in his repertoire..i couldn recall his name. there are a few sides more in this book about the japanese relationship and their reactions on moz ...also more info on the japan tour i guess a lot of the the info came from a girl named Kanako Ishikawa who made this japanese moz fanzine lucky lisp and was interviewed by the author of scandal and passion

i canlook up this chapter of this book fromdavid bret and type some kind of stuff down or if you have it can look up for yourself /or soemone scan these chapter

that would be great!

From page 162 of Morrissey: Scandal and Passion, by David Bret:

The Japanese have always been wildly receptive of drama queens, chanteuses réalistes, and generally over-the-top performers: Barbara, Freddie Mercury, the great French tragedienne Damia who specialised in songs about death, Jacqueline Danno (this author's godmother) - Japanese fans could never get enough of them. Morrissey was already well known here. Smiths and Morrissey memorabilia could be found in shop windows in the Ginza, Tokyo's liveliest thoroughfare, almost a Japanese Soho or Pigalle: geisha boys in the classy kage-me-jaya ("tea-houses amongst the shadows") sported Morrissey quiffs. The country's most famous female impersonator, Miwa (Akihiro Maruyama) - 55 but still very glamorous and known as "the Japanese Piaf" - was not averse to adding the odd Morrissey song to his impressive repertoire.

Akihiro Miwa is a very well-known chanson singer in drag, not a Morrissey impersonator.

Ginza is a posh part of Tokyo, not as sleazy as Pigalle and Soho.

overview and descpr of the single concerts

A photo-feature by Kevin Cummins of Morrissey in Japan was included in the October 19, 1991 edition of the NME. Morrissey supplied all the captions in his inimitable child-like scribe
with comments under pictures of japanese fans and of himself -quite entertaining
here is the link (2 sides)http://www.motorcycleaupairboy.com/gallery/categories.php?cat_id=67

and here are some live pics and furhter pics of him in japan
http://www.motorcycleaupairboy.com/gallery/search.php

mr bret did write with the help of kanako a bit more in his book whichis better when you read it yourslelf but alot of the gig descriptions you can find in the passions reviews

i wonder about the japanese dfans if there are still that enthusiatic about the moz as thy were back then(he got the same wild reactions as everywhere else appeared) and the smiths was known even though they never played there

i read a comment of another singer who had for a short time a beatlesesque following of young japanese fans who saw in him "some weird prince of darkness " back then in the 80 ties where everywhere else he gets a quite different ,more calm reaction when he appears...its good old blixa bargeld from einstürzende neubauten whom i quote from memory
he said something like: "being a fan of someone is such a big part of japanese culture(or teenage culture?) and theyre very hip and alwayds know the latest trends and create something their own of the different western influences and if you dont continue visit them on a reguar basis to remain interest they find someone new to be interested in...we didnt visited japan not for quite a long time and ( the interest in us) its different now"

even though i know little about japan i saw a book about the fashion style of japanese teenagers and they really make it their own -mix western country style and create something new so thats a pretty unique style which you cant see elsewhere

i read also there is an unauthorised translation of all smiths songs translated in japanese but the translation where absolutely false aswell as the subtitles for the hammersmith concert 91 which got aired on a japanese channel

some scene i quote from memory from brets book where moz visits a temple in tokyo (?) and gets photgraphed by people even though they dont know him but he cuts such an unusal personna that he gets attention nonetheless...

eBay no longer operates in Japan, they weren't successful in there.
You should try Yahoo auction or Rakuten site.

Daikanyama is posh, but very much hang out of fashion victims.

Lucky Lisp fanzine decesed long time ago, many Morrissey Japanese fan sites are very quiet these days, except mimiko's (but not sure she wants me to promote her site in here).

to bad she don't want to promote her in here, i would really like to talk to a japanese moz/smiths fan.

I will try to find them on the auction sites but they are most certainly to expensive for me on those type of sites.

too bad she don't want to promote her in here, i would really like to talk to a japanese moz/smiths fan.

You'd like to talk to only one Japanese fan?
Pity you find some in here and other sites, too. :p
