The correct way to burn a Morrissey
September 07, 2005

You see a lot of these "Under the Influence Of" or "At Home With" compilation albums, where an artist allegedly picks a bunch of songs which mean a lot to them, or influenced them or whatever. And it stands to reason that no comtemporary artist worth their salt is going to do anything other than pick as widly eclectic an array of genres as possible. So for example, Super Furry Animals give us the Beach Boys, Datblygu, Sly And The Family Stone, ELO, Joey Beltram and freaking Bizet. Well that's all well and good, and it can be a nice way to experience things you wouldn't normally come across, but it doesn't necessarily work as an album which you'd want to listen to over and over again.

Morrissey did one last year, and it was pretty much what you'd have expected: New York Dolls, Ramones, Sparks, Patti Smith, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Ludus, Nico and Klaus Nomi all present and correct. Sure, there are some undiscovered gems, especially the excellent Cajun 'Saturday Night Special' by Lesa Cormier & The Sundown Playboys. But I've only listened to it all the way through about three times, and I'm a Morrissey nut. But now the good folks at Morrissey-solo have digged up a list Mozzer made for the NME in 1989 of "Singles To Be Cremated With". And it's fantastic. Here's the tracklisting:

1. Wham! - Wake Me Up Before Yo Go Go
2. Dr Dre feat. Nate Dogg and Snoop Dogg - Next Episode
3. Cornershop - England's Dreaming
4. Kernkraft 400 - Zombie Nation
5. Johnny Marr and the Healers - Bangin' On

...hang on... that's not right, wrong list... here we go:

1. The World's Loneliest Man - Vince Eager
2. Don't Take The Lovers From The World - Shirley Bassey
3. What A Nice Way To Turn 17 - The Crystals
4. There, I've Said It Again - Sam Cooke
5. Loneliness Remembers What Happiness Forgets - Dionne Warwick
6. Strange, I Know - The Marvelettes
7. Third Finger, Left Hand - Martha Reeves And The Vandellas
8. I Take It Back - Sandy Posey
9. Heart - Rita Pavone
10. Shoes - Reparata
11. Terry - Twinkle
12. Attack - The Toys
13. I've Been A Bad, Bad Boy - Paul Jones
14. Insult To Injury - Timi Yuro

Now as hits of yester-year go, that's pretty bloody good - and it works beautifully as a compilation album. So how come *none* of these made it onto "Under the Influence"? Bah. Anyway, you can download the whole thing here.

Is 'digged' a word in England?

I don't think we have that one here in the US. Cool mention of the site, though- and that fake list was super-funny.
