The Sun link doesn't work on my phone, so I've no idea if it's PETA or a farmer who has been cruel.

Congratulations on this, your 2,508th message, and one of your most insightful.

f***! Another Nerwank thread. In this we learn (from Radis Noir) that until very recently Morrissey was quite content to indulge in the abuse of animals - in this case sheep's wool.
Just another case of saying one thing and doing another e.g.

"I'm not racist" *enter Morrissey racist comment of choice*
"Sexual violence is repugnant" *enter Morrissey comment of choice in which he colludes with sexual violence*

You might recall all those years ago when with The Smiths he claimed to be vegetarian? He made some quip about how poor his diet was and that he survived on pizza. Pizza with animal rennet* - So, he wasn't actually even vegetarian but was happy to use the label.

* "Most stomach-derived rennet is taken from the fourth stomach of young, unweaned calves. These animals are not killed expressly for their rennet; rather they are killed for meat production (in this case, veal) and the rennet is a byproduct."

I didn't trust him then. I do not trust him now.

Oh, I forgot Benny's fact. Thanks, Benny.

From Peta:

" ... in the cashmere industry, they're shorn in midwinter, at a time when they need their coats the most, and as a result, the vulnerable animals can die of cold stress. The same goes for Angora goats, who are used for mohair, and Pashmina goats, who are used for Pashmina wool.

Yet again, Morrissey involved in animal abuse.
The new album, if there is one, should be titled: The Height of Hypocrisy.

Given that The Smiths were only around in the '80's, & it was only as recent as 1995, that a mere 0.04% of the world's population had access to the internet (FACT), how could any 'vegetarian' have had the full insight & access to the information levels that we have today, especially regarding the point you tediously raise on animal rennet?

I can't be arsed responding to your other ill-advised & juvenile entries.

I couldn't see a 'yawn' or 'bored' icon to assign to your post, so had to resort to typing.

That man would treat a child or dog the same, some people should not be allowed near children or animals.
It's a shocking picture of what it is like when people forget their own spiritual essence. In effect he's just a mindless meatbag walking around on this planet and he should be on a register like a child abuser. Sheep are so placid and gentle, and have no defence from attackers. We all have it in us to cross a line but we also have spiritual intelligence. We're here for a reason in this lifetime and it's not to beat up the helpless and innocent, and then eat them, or wear them.
We're all complicit if we buy into the Industry of using animals.
I have a small flock of sheep all different breeds and personalities and all with a common sad story of how they got here. They NEED to be sheared every year apart from one Scottish Soay who sheds his wool. Otherwise they would overheat, and be prone to maggot infestations, these would eventually eat into their flesh. I shear them once a year and pay the contractor extra to do it without cutting them, he only gets 2 euros per sheep normally and the wool is of very little monetary value. When I got him last summer he had sheared 150 sheep in under 2 hours, before arriving at my place. Most sheep farmers I know keep sheep to sell the lambs - for the more lucrative Easter market primarily. Not very holy but in keeping with the "Pascal Sacrifice" theme, we were all programmed with.
I use some of the fleeces myself for insulation projects, and felting items and I give some of them to handspinners. I consider that wool to be guilt free because the sheep need a "haircut". Purists may argue, I just do.
EU subsidies have ruined the traditional link with the land, the planet and nature. It's up to us as individuals to change what we do, what we buy and who we support with our money and our energy.
If that comes out of a depressing article and expose like this then it's of some use to read it. Otherwise it's just putting our attention on how shitty people can be, to animals who look to us for help.
I know the Alexander McQueen cardigan will come up again, I still think it's an acrylic knockoff as I don't think Morrissey is perverse enough to wear something he is passionately opposed to and constantly brings up. I do think he is perverse enough to wear something to wind people up and keep them talking.

Also people do what they can, they're up against pervasive industries. All they can do is highlight some of it & campaign for incremental changes.

I'm not vegetarian (or vegan), but I know people who claimed to be so back in that period, & information levels were so poor that many were still thinking they could eat fish & still claim to be vegetarian.

Others, at the time, thought being vegetarian only related to avoiding 'meat' (beef/lamb/pork) products, so, to some, eating chicken didn't count either. Maybe their thinking centred around the fact that chickens don't have 4 legs, so they didn't fit into the 'meat' category.

We're now more informed & people can make the right choice for themselves.

I’m going to assume that:
  • You’re under 30
  • You're stupid
  • You're really, really stupid
I know this may come as a shock to you but information could be, and was shared, prior to the internet. Yes, even in the 1980s!

I, as a vegan, had access to this information. If one believed passionately in something there were these places called libraries – community buildings that housed books – were one could gain knowledge on a number of subjects.

If one had less passion for the subject one only had to stroll down most UK cities on a Saturday afternoon and one would be able to see vegetarian, vegan and anti-vivisection stalls* all carrying leaflets related to wool, lanolin, cashmere and the cruelty involved.

You seem to be asserting that:
  • Morrissey never frequented libraries
  • Morrissey didn’t really know very much about animal cruelty
Neither of the above reflect the image Morrissey propagated of himself, at the time, or now.

So, which is it?
  • Morrissey never frequented libraries?
  • Morrissey was never interested enough in the subject of animal cruelty to research the subject in a library?
  • Morrissey never once visited an animal rights stall? (although he used to invite them to attend his own gigs)
  • Morrissey didn’t know what he was talking about?
I’m delighted that you could be arsed to respond with your ill-advised & juvenile entry. It was a perfect illustration of someone who knows nothing shaming themselves in public.

* Some socialist (and derivatives thereof) also carried this information and did some venues and bands.

And did any of these people (that you 'know') eventually learn to tie their own shoelaces?

What you describe above is Morrissey. Someone who claimed to be vegetarian when he wasn't. People 'played'' at being vegetarian because it was becoming a trend - much like veganism is now. If anyone 'believed' in vegetarianism or veganism the information was available. I know because I accessed it. To claim otherwise is just silly.

I became a vegetarian when I was 11 (vegan later) because I loved my pet rabbit & couldn't stand the thought of anyone thinking he was food. I'm not a hardline activist though.

An argument for glacial change. An argument that suggests that it's the "pervasive industries" that are to blame and that we have no personal responsibility to affect change in our own lives. An argument that reflects the selfishness of humankind: we maybe, kind of, probably want change, based on how the wind is blowing and how that might affect us but we don't want to change our behaviours.

Here we are with the planet in a dire mess and still people make their excuses. We're f***ed!

I think it's fine for people to choose to become vegetarian, or vegan, I don't have a problem with either...I could actually become vegetarian myself without too much difficulty, but I do get irritated by some vegans I've known, who've gone on and on about it relentlessly & almost to the point of trying to force their preference on others. Just gets my back up I'm afraid.
