Morrissey: Norway massacre is "nothing" compared to the actions of fast food chains

Once again he shoots himself in the foot.

Morrissey: 'Norway Attacks Nothing Compared To Actions Of Fast Good Giants' - Gigwise
He claims...

Morrissey has courted criticism after he reportedly compared the actions of fast food companies to the recent attacks in Norway.

At least 76 people died last week in two separate attacks which were both orchestrated by far-right extremist Anders Behring Breivik.

Morrissey, a staunch vegetarian, made reference the massacre during a performance in at Stodola Club in Warsaw, Poland earlier this week, according to the Daily Mirror.

Before playing The Smiths' song 'Meat is Murder', he is quoted as saying: “We all live in a murderous world, as the events in Norway have shown, with 97 dead.

“Though that is nothing compared to what happens in McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried Sh*t every day.”

Video footage of Morrissey performing the song has been published on YouTube, but it omits his alleged introduction.

Morrissey's comment is the latest in a string of outbursts in recent months, many of which have focussed on animal welfare.

Morrissey says Norway massacre is "nothing" compared to the actions of fast food chains - Daily Mirror

MORRISSEY has sparked outrage after saying the tragedy in Norway was “nothing” compared to the actions of fast food chains.

The controversial singer, 52, made his remark while on stage at a gig in Warsaw on Sunday night.

Before launching into his hit Meat is Murder, the outspoken vegetarian made reference to the horrific events last Friday.

Referring to the death toll as thought at the time he said: “We all live in a murderous world, as the events in Norway have shown, with 97 dead. Though that is nothing compared to what happens in McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried S*** every day.”

Two nights earlier the singer introduced the same song with another lambasting of the brands.

Gig-goers took to his fan sites to condemn the his outburst. One wrote: “The killing of children compared to KFC & McDonald’s?!!! What an ass****!”

Another wrote: “I really don’t know if that is *forgivable? Or of any use to the vegetarian cause?”

A spokesman said last night: “Morrissey has decided not to comment any further as he believes his statement speaks for itself.”

Update 10/18/2011:

Sistasheila posted the link to the video and actual words spoken during the concert:

"Despite the love, we do live on a murderous planet,
as you will have seen over the last few days in Norway.
Murder murder murder.
But really, every single day, worse things happen in KFC and McDonalds.
Murder, murder, murder, murder, murder..."

First time poster....

I havent read ALL the posts on this thread....so it may have been said numerous times.....

My sympathys are with you Norway.....imho what happened was a tradegy created by one man, and no reason can justify.

I almost never post or concern myself with such issues, but I feel compelled to offer my 'support' to those affected by the events in your country.

'There must be a better world' and i wish there was.

..and once again, Moz i am with you. I don't think i could love you more.

I know what he's trying to say, but why does he say it? I understand how strongly he feels about animal rights, but there is a line that is extremely obvious that you shouldn't cross, and he crosses all the time, more frequently now than ever.

Oh, Moz...we get it already, you want people to love you and you need attention.

As a citizen of Oslo, I think this the last I can take of Morrissey's arrogance. I always used to chalk these types of comments up to "well, he's an pretentious self centered asshole, but at least the music is good." and that way I was able to go on ignoring Moz's poorly thought through words and actions. But i think that's it this time, the last few albums were shit. I found myself struggling to try to like his new material, but when I have to TRY to like it, well, that's just another sign his work has declined to the point of no longer being of any quality. With his clear lack of respect for other people's lives this time, and teenagers nonetheless, I think it's time Morrissey became a relic of my vinyl.

Thanks Moz, for years of great music. My record collection will miss you. It's just too bad you're an arrogant asshole, who can't admit to himself that he will never grow up to be Oscar Wilde.

Self centred? What is self centred about providing a voice for other animals, who as one poster above just eluded to can offer nothing to Morrissey until their murdered bodies are processed into food? Your choice of words is beyond laughable.

Re: Article: Morrissey: Norway massacre is "nothing" compared to the actions of fast

I used to be a fan of his, but today I threw all my records in the trash. Could not find a more suitable place for them after his statement.

The Smiths were a great band. But Morrissey is an idiot with a great voice. This is not the first time he has uttered crap. This daft creature should stick to singing his songs.

Re: Article: Morrissey: Norway massacre is "nothing" compared to the actions of fast

Still, all this online hysteria, all the calls for his head seem misplaced. He's a singer given to hyperbole, he makes outrageous statements, he taunts his fans, his interviewers, his audience and, it seems, just about every other person who crosses his path. As he's said so many times, people don't like him, and the feeling is mutual. He keeps his unconditional love for the animals. He's hardly alone.

What MIGHT piss someone off is that what he's saying is that if he had a kid and was walking down the street, and some nutter came along thinking "hmm, i either want a pizza or shoot Morrisseys kid", and opted for the latter, Moz would almost be relieved.

At times like this Morrissey should show his fans respect by keeping his mouth shut. We all know how he feels about animal rights and I respect his view that the life of a chicken is equal to that of a human being, although I don´t share his opinion. There was no need to use the massacre in Norway as a comparison, he could have made his point anyway, as he has done som many times before. An icon like Morrissey should stand up for his fans -comfort them and help them find the words to describe their sorrow and frustration.

if you want to throw your records away now, just send them to me!!! haha

Let's face it, Morrissey is, and always has been a weird tosser. This recent, ludicrous statement backs that up. Hey Morrissey, you're a tosser.

I hope in another life Morrissey comes back as a chicken, a pig or an Aberdeen Angus, then I could stick him on a barbie and eat him. Actually, having said that, if I knew it was Morrissey in a previous life, maybe not.......

I stepped on an ant earlier. Since the law won't punish me, I've handcuffed myself to radiator and thrown the key out of the window. I hope I starve to death.

It really is nothing compared to what happens all over the world.
Honestly I'm just happy it was a white man that did it..how come no ones burning churches? Or attacking Christian children in the street? It's typical of people, free-speech is great, as long as you don't offend my own personal race, sexual fetish, eating habits, religion. Ol mozza has said/done things in the past that should have been red flags for you. Don't get mad now.

Re: Article: Morrissey: Norway massacre is "nothing" compared to the actions of fast

I agree 100% with what Morrissey said. On what basis can anybody claim that the life of a child is more valuable than the life of chicken? Both are sentient creatures. To arbitrarily give more weight to one species because you are one of that species, betrays a distinct lack of intelligence and objectivity. Do you really think that you know what is going on in the mind of the man sitting opposite you on the bus, any more than a chicken in a cage?

Matthew

Really? Because a chicken is hardly as sapient as a human being. To compare the based on a single simplistic semantic factor seems to anyone intelligent and objective to simply be either naive or purposefully irrational. You may as well compare a chicken to a broccoli cell. Or a human being for that matter. To not give more weight to human beings shows a lack of humanity, empathy and compassion - and shows a complete lack of understanding of basic biology and the natural world (animals eat other animals).
