Morrissey's birthday; All You Need Is Me: New single UK release information

22 May 2008

Forty-nine years ago to the day, a star was born. Happy Birthday, Steven Patrick Morrissey!

In a press release, Polydor UK have announced that Morrissey's new single, "All You Need Is Me" - originally due to be released on 19 May in the UK - is now set for a 2 June release and will be available for one week only.

"All You Need Is Me" is one of the new songs to have graced Morrissey's set lists at recent concerts. He also played the song earlier this year on Later...With Jools Holland, alongside other new songs - "That's How People Grow Up" and "Something Is Squeezing My Skull" - and his classic "The Last Of The Famous International Playboys."

The new single will be available on CD and two 7" vinyl formats. Two of the B-sides - "Children In Pieces" and "My Dearest Love" - are new songs recorded in Los Angeles with composer Gustavo Santaolalla, who has won Oscars for his music for the films Brokeback Mountain and Babel, as well as BAFTAs for his music for the films The Motorcycle Diaries and Babel. The new songs feature additional production and were mixed by Jerry Finn, producer of 2004's widely acclaimed UK #2 album You Are The Quarry, who has also produced the A-side "All You Need Is Me." A third B-side is a cover version of the David Bowie song "Drive-in Saturday." The cover version was recorded live during Morrissey's North American tour in 2007.

The UK CD single tracklisting is:

"All You Need Is Me"
"Children In Pieces"

The UK 7" vinyl single 1 tracklisting is:

"All You Need Is Me"
"My Dearest Love"

The UK 7" vinyl single 2 tracklisting is:

"All You Need Is Me"
"Drive-in Saturday" (recorded live at the Orpheum Theater, Omaha, Nebraska, 11 May 2007)

Jerry Finn is currently finishing production of Morrissey's new studio album, the highly anticipated follow-up to 2006's UK #1 album Ringleader Of The Tormentors. The new studio album is scheduled for autumn 2008. Details will be announced soon.

Morrissey's Greatest Hits compilation is out now on Decca/Polydor. The collection spans Morrissey's 20-year solo career and includes UK Top 10 and Top 20 singles.

Morrissey will headline O2 Wireless Festival in London's Hyde Park on 4 July - his only UK date this summer. He has chosen Beck, New York Dolls, The Courteeners, Black Kids, Siouxsie Sioux, Guillemots, Dirty Pretty Things, The Wombats, and Noise Is The Best Revenge, among others, to be his guests at Hyde Park.

"All You Need Is Me" can be pre-ordered from recordstore.co.uk.

anyone know what singles are being released the next few weeks??

could the date of the single release and limited availability have anything to do with bettering the odds of scoring a number one?

one week only? Are they trying to boost chart position by making sure anyone who wants it has to buy it during that one week?

edit: I hate myself for being so cynical, especially on his birthday. Sorry Mozzy, I still love you.

Im sure that is the general idea and it is a decent one I suppose, as this single has been available for a while now on the Greatest Hits CD.

Bona Drag contained 7 singles, 5 of them never available on album before, and the album was released AFTER the singles so people actually bought those singles, as that was the only way they could have them!

how do they even have it only available for one week, does that mean it wont be in shops?you can only order it?
I guess it has to be that way,for ,what would the shops do with unsold copies at the end of the week?

sunday comes along and you go to pick up a copy.

"no,you cant buy it,its gone bad now"

as if its produce or something.

certainly done for chart position, which is fine,it is a business I suppose.

I guess it doesn't matter for most people here whether it will be available for 1 week or several years, since I assume that most of us pre-ordered it and were hoping we would have it being delivered today.

Since I believe that leaks are never accidental, I imagine this means there won't be any leaks at all now. Which means I am going to have to wait for the physical singles to reach the US so my friend can rip it for me... I preordered.

I love you Moz, but you really are stretching my patience: a one week release? Why not just make a limited run of the CD singles? Also, are we really expected to purchase a vinyl version of the single just to get "My Dearest Love?" That's no way to treat your fans. Instead of relying of the integrity and quality of the music, Morrissey has been reduced to gimmicks to sell records. Damn shame IMHO.:(

This one week thing is becoming quite popular with record companies. Another high profile artist did it recently, can't remember who though.
