Redbrick: "The Smiths: There is a Band That Will Never Die Out" (November 3, 2019)

TV Editor Catrin Osborne discusses the legacy of The Smiths as a quintessential university band.

Excerpt:

"Within the ephemeral online culture of Gen Z (those of us born after 1996) has risen the phenomenon of posting explicitly depressive statements which draws parallels with many of Morrisey’s lyrics. No song by The Smiths exemplifies this better than ‘How Soon is Now?’. A song that pairs Johnny Marr’s jangly guitar with Morrisey’s lamentations on the experience of a failed night out where he concludes ‘And you go home and you cry / And you want to die’. This juxtaposition between joyous instrumental and sorrowful lyrics seems as popular now as it was when it was released. Dubbed ‘sadfishing,’ young people are oversharing their emotions online in the modern age and this is reflected in a lot of popular music. However, there is nothing new about Billie Eilish singing ‘I wanna end me’ over a fast-paced, dance beat. The Smiths did that over a decade before today’s students were even born."

I was quite enjoying reading that until the author (Catrin Osborne) fell into using cliché after cliché...pity the article ended the way it did.
Nothing insightful, or new, just more cut & paste in essence to produce something to fill a space on a page...Not a week goes by without Morrisey’s big mouth striking again blah blah....sigh, yawn, nothing to see here, move on.

It's going to be fun watching the drones comment on this. It will go like this:

"Nice. Paying homage to The Smiths"

"Oh...wait...er..."

"The bastards. How could they?"

It's great article and as for the ending - well, he did say/do all those things.

Yep, I think Osborne more or less treads the same path as Sturges, pity.
Another 'no mark' article.

So, because of the ending (which is factual) you have ignored the rest of the article?

No, that's not the case at all.
Of course I read it, & I've given my conclusion.
Just in case you missed it I've put it here below for you.

"Yep, I think Osborne more or less treads the same path as Sturges, pity.

I like there examples and how they add zero context(Chinese subspecies of course being the obvious one), Kahn, that awful mayor who doesn't speak good English, and throwing antifa retards out of his concert for trying to ruin the show for everyone. These leftist morons like the author are so out of touch that they actually stick up for antifa thugs

Let's take these point by point before you all jump all over it hysterically wetting yourselves with glee, shall we?

  • Not a week goes by without Morrisey’s [sic] big mouth striking again.
Well that's using the most boring, un-inventive, copy-cat & over used press cliche...at that point I'd lost any real interest, &, added to the fact she incorrectly spells 'Morrisey', the article had already lost all credibility as far as I was concerned. Those schoolgirl errors aside, it's actually false, & a complete gross exaggeration for a start. Give me a week by week list of things where 'bigmouth' has struck 'again'..if it's not false, as I say, then provide this 'not a week goes by' timeline of evidence.
Yes that's correct but someone with half a brain would look beyond the headline to find the correct context in which it was used (I have but I can't be arsed to type it in here - go use google), & when did he say this? errmm 2010 FFS
Yep this is correct - so what? he can wear what he wants; you make your own interpretation why he did so...has Moz voted for them? have you looked, read & understood what they (FB) stand for?
Yep he probably did, so what? does it have any real relevance today? have you read any history relevant to that period? what did Hitler stand for? was it left or right in today's context? is socialism left wing? isn't Corbyn left wing? Take a look at Jossey written in 2018 who references Hayek..it's an interesting read, if you have an open mind...or even a mind of your own
True, but it is a fact that Khan cannot speak proper English, he speaks estuary English. For a man in the office of 'Mayor of London' I personally find that appalling
Yes it was his right to remove a protester from his concert;
Has anyone proved otherwise?

The facts are, & let's be totally frank, I can safely say, without fear of contradiction, that all of this is regurgitated stuff, some of it almost a decade old.

If you want to revel in more of the same, & feel it supports your cause, then crack on fools, but my conclusion remains the same, it's regurgitation of the Sturges article, which in itself was regurgitation of someone else's article & I therefore conclude, it's another 'no mark article'.

The only person wetting themselves appears to be you son.

Morrissey speaking truth offends these idiots. It's amusing

Well, it is amusing but at the same time it's disappointing because they trot out the same stuff ad infinitum...none of them have the intelligence to read anything of worth, apart from press cuttings & each others threads...the press don't provide facts, they provide out of context biased opinion to suit their agenda & hit the headlines...so the dumb reader just absorbs it like a sponge & regurgitates it as 'gospel' in their next thread comment.
Annoying like I say, but you can't educate pork, can you?

So what you are saying is that all the people in the UK who have deserted Morrissey due to his views, are dumb?

Yeah - it's all cut & paste, out of context & he's really done very little to create this level of outrage. Pretty much everything he's said boils down to animal rights, hating governments & the law, & thinking humans don't get on when we want different things. None of it would have escalated to this point if he was less socially isolated, because it would be buried beneath stories about his private life & things he was involved in.

The saddest thing in his Messages on Central was him trying to explain that his shyness had limited his career & he knew it came across as arrogance. He tells us what's wrong with him all the time & everyone ignores it.

In the end, the people mindlessly attacking him will look like heartless bastards & his legacy will be fine. But it's bloody ugly to watch him being hounded in the meantime.
