Means nothing. The majority of copies were bought by non fans, for the sole purpose of re-selling for a profit.
So with that logic it means nothing for all the singles which puts them them on even footing. Number 2 sounds great now. Thanks for clearing it up!

Forever in 2nd place

once people got over bowies deatht then its time for the profiteering to begin.sad but true.

The charts often become a homogeneous lump. People forget the charts were streamed into genre for a long time - most savy record buyers in the 80's referred to the independent music charts not national when buying music.
There is a vast discrepancy between what 'the Nation' were listening to and who were buying indie records.
For example:
The Smiths #1 singles via the Indie Chart during the 80's:
TCM - 7 weeks at number 1.
WDDIM - 9 weeks at number 1.
HKIMN - 3 weeks at number 1.
WIWRN - 2 weeks at number 1.
HSIN - 4 weeks at number 1.
SS - 3 weeks at number 1.
TJIFA - 2 weeks at number 1.
TBWATIHS - 3 weeks at number 1.
BSA - 5 weeks at number 1.
Panic - 4 weeks at number 1.
Ask - 2 weeks at number 1.
SOTW - 4 weeks at number 1.
STAB - 3 weeks at number 1.
GIAC - 2 weeks at number 1.

Not sure that limited edition vinyl-only releases count as profiteering, in the scheme of things.

im talking about people putting it on ebay for profit.

can somebody tell me why theres no lyrics for paint a vulgar picture in the wiki above,,strange.

Beating out U2 and The Beatles on RSD - awesome. In actual career album sales - nowhere near - but a symbolic victory nonetheless.

Pointless list, there was 12000 Smiths, 7000 U2 if there had been more U2 printed, more Beatles printed. who knows what the chart would look like. You've got to start from a level playing field. Or pointless list.

OK, in that case, yeah, totally pointless. Didn't realize there were different numbers of pressings.

Here's the rub:
According to bowiewonderworld, there were 3000 copies of the ltd coloured vinyl No Plan released for RSD (information on the actual amount made is scarce and this was one of the few places with a figure).
http://www.bowiewonderworld.com/planner/17_04.htm
No Plan was also released on the Friday before RSD on black vinyl and download.
Davidbowie.com then indicate the figures for both releases were combined for the charts:

"The clear blue vinyl No Plan EP qualified for the Official Singles Chart and when sales of the traditional black variant (released on vinyl 12" on Friday) were included, the EP rounded out the weekend as the biggest selling vinyl single, hitting the Official Singles Chart Update Top 40 on Monday."

So it appears, besides the ridiculous idea of comparing records with different amounts available in a sales context - Bowie also had an unfair advantage in terms of combining sales figures with a non RSD release. It renders the entire notion of modern charts redundant especially when related to RSD sales.

FWD.
