The Left Wing Thread

I find it ridiculous or even outrageous that you worship a dictator. You lived in a dictatorship so you must know what it is like.

Although I'm pretty radical, I'm not ready to pop on an I heart Lenin" t-shirt, however, what I think this fellow has sort of attempted to articulate, is that Russian "democracy" is the kind that needs quotation marks. Some time after coming to power, Yeltsin forced through radical, sweeping free market initiatives, causing rampant poverty, and mostly against the popular will. Naomi klein, mentioned earlier, devotes a chapter of her latest book (which is BRILLIANT) to how what could have been a new hope for Russia, was turned into just a new kind of oppression. The current leader, Putin, really has echoes of Stalin, and opposition political parties have been outlawed, some people have been assassinated, the democracy Russia currently "enjoys" is nothing to be too pleased about. I think thats' what he's getting at.

yeah, but no only russian democracy is crappy, i quite found the representative democracy as the "state of the art" politic way a sad illusion, put in our faces since we are born...

for example in Chile the terror was not brought by the spaniards "conquerors" whom to this land did no harm at all, they killed not , they pillaged not, they lived together with the natives in a good way north of the bio bio river... and south of it natives continued living the way they wanted with little realtionship with spaniards at all, everyone happy, but then elite wankers rose to power, they came with the dream of republics, democracies, developement, bollocks, they killed, they pillaged, they enslaved( not literally) them with their crap f***ed up a fair land, and then make everyone belive that it was necesarry, a natural process, that spaniards were opressive c***s... GRAW!

i hate the democracy, the one that has been applied by the elites to show a mirage of equalness, i'd rather have a powerful red state that controls the packs of rabid wankers that dont give a f*** about exploiting to have a wonderfull set of cars, have a set of mansions, to hell with em

Seventeen years after the Exxon Valdez spill dumped millions of gallons of crude oil into the pristine waters of Prince William Sound, Alaska, Exxon Mobil has yet to pay $4.5 billion in punitive damages ordered by a court.

A federal court ordered Exxon Mobil Corp. to pay $4.5 billion to Alaskan fishing communities affected by the 1989 spill. But Exxon continues to fight the order, claiming the $3.5 billion paid in initial cleanup efforts and compensation is sufficient.

Alaskans say the devastation continues. Herring and salmon remain scarce, and people have lost their livelihoods. Fishing communities remain devastated.

"You'll find evidence of crude oil still seeping below the surface," says Betsy Goll, the Alaskan representative for the Sierra Club. "The fishery haven't fully recovered as well as some of the marine life in the area."

An Exxon representative told ABC News that the company can't afford to pay the settlement. This from the company that made $8.4 billion in profits last quarter.

That's how I basically read this post and why I will probably send a check for another thousand or two on the next dip.

No more rightist wankers allowed here :p

Nah don't take it as a GTFO in so much as a questioning of why you would stay somewhere that you do not like. If your apartment is not to your satisfaction you find another. The US is not designed nor will it accomodate the system of government nor the type of economy that you support. Therefore why stay?

Today I was thinking about rubbish newspapers and why so many (=all, at lleast where I live) of them promote right-wing ideas. Does right always go hand in hand with tackiness, bad taste, lies and bad journalism?

The Wall Street Journal is about as good as it gets, and it's right-wing, at least as Americans understand the term. Same for The Economist in the UK.

I was thinking more about the Daily Mail type of paper... All tabloids I've ever read promote fascism  I wonder if you have to rely on those ideas if you want your newspaper to be popular

I think I'm mostly leftist too, however I hate labels,
and some of the time I really believe people should behave
bettter,
so perhaps I'm not leftist at all........
Gee I really don't know. Why am I even here, being so politically
confused!?..........

Over here there's a pretty clear distinction between tabloids and "real papers," with the possible exception of the New York Post. Even the Murdoch-owned papers aren't that biased. The whole notion of being loyal to something like The Guardian or The Daily Mail because of their political slants seems bizarre to us (well, to me, anyway). At most, those in the larger metropolitan areas can choose between two (sometimes more) local papers, each of which may have a certain slant.

the popular press promotes their popular ideas, they aint gonna promote anything that is not in their own interest, which usually means their owners interest! So you will never get anything that promotes anti-capatalistism in the "real" or tabloid papers!

Get hold of "Socialist Worker" if you want to read something alternative!

Of course, "Socialist Worker" would only print things in their interest, and their owners' interest as well. I would suggest you read everything, always considering the context and the source.

I totally agree but as I said in my post "if you want to read something alternative", I wasn't suggesting as the only thing, it wouldn't be an alternative if everyone only read SW, would it?

I read the Times (occasionally) & I just read the opposite of whatever their position is on 99% of their articles/opinion.
