The Moz/Smiths Top 100, FINAL RESULTS!!

imight giv that comparison a toss up, but compare something like "Stretch Out And Wait" (a lovely little song) to say "Boxers"- it should be no context for the solo effort, but there is sucha slant towards The Smiths- always has been.

theres no doubt that The Smiths catalogue is far more consistent and that generally possesses a ceratin magic that is absent in the solo cannon, but Morrissey's solo work is far too underrated- even by many of his most ardent fans.

I have the idea your not doing well lately Chris, such negativity and
disaprovement...sorry to turn the issue...but is it possible you suffer
winterdepression?...[lots do] ... sitting before a special light can help
yoo going through the winter time much better, also for the ones around
you

just trying to be supportive, not putting you down Chris, I respect you

Splendid work, Houdinin. Really fascinating stuff.

One request I have, though, is an average score per songwriter. Of those who have written at least 5 or 6 songs with Morrissey, I expect the order is something like;

1. Marr
2. Street
3. Boorer
4. Nevin
5. Whyte
6. Tobias

with scores going from over 8 for Street and Marr to maybe around 7 for Tobias. would be cool to know.
cheers.
Maurice

imight giv that comparison a toss up, but compare something like "Stretch Out And Wait" (a lovely little song) to say "Boxers"- it should be no context for the solo effort, but there is sucha slant towards The Smiths- always has been.

There again, though, I'd say "Stretch Out and Wait" is streets ahead of "Boxers" in every way. "Boxers" is a decent Morrissey single with a good story to it and a nice vocal melody. "Stretch Out and Wait" is something else, though - a beautiful piece of music, put against some really incredible lyrics, poetic, witty, dripping with irony and humour. "Boxers" is more earnest and direct, but far less interesting.

So I don't think their respective positions are anything to do with a "slant" towards the Smiths - "Stretch Out" merely has more going for it as a song.

but is it possible you suffer
winterdepression?

yes, its very possible and it might explain the bluntness of my commentary, but the underlying sentiment still remains true.

ive never felt that Moz's solo work gets a fairr shake around here. the thought that anyone could possibly prefer "Barbarism Begins At Home" to "Glamorous Glue" or "Half A Person" to "We'll Let You Know" is beyond ridiculous. no doubt, Morrissey's solo career has produced the kind of shite that could never hav been dreamt as coming from The Smiths, but not everything The Smiths did was sheer brilliance and much of Moz's solo catalogue is.

EOH is shocked (in a good way) that Still Ill made top 3

Why's "What Difference Does It Make" so low??? :tears:

I thought this poll was bloody marvellous. Many thanks to Houdini for your efforts. Of course, you do realise, you will have to repeat the poll in approximately five years so that Morrissey's spies can check the poll for the next version of his Greatest Hits!

Am I being a tad cynical?

I find it hard to believe Interlude, Cemetry Gates and Asleep are so low, they're all top ten easily in my opinion. Girl Least Likely to is dreadfully low as well

hey houdini.
would be cool to see the scores for the 90's and 00's if poss.
reckon the quality of the maladjusted, viva hate and quarry b-sides will lift those years quite a bit, and the disappointing ROTT b-sides may show 06 to be one of Morrissey's worst ever years...
