    Copyright questions

Generally speaking... 1) No, although if money is involved, they should pay royalties 2) No. 3) Yes/no. Permission is needed from whoever owns the relevant rights. This is often the songwriters/composers, but it might not be if they have sold the relevant rights to someone else. 4) Yes/no...

Should Morrissey have paid Joyce the million?

    Why would he do that?

Think just the fact of Visconti's involvement makes reasonable to speculate that (a) Morrissey isn't controlling the project (b) Morrissey's relationship with BMG broke down some time ago.

Ian Brown's tweet upsets some people - it reminds them of Morrissey

Ian Brown, Morrissey and Noel Gallagher may well have all been in the Hacienda that night in 1984 when someone set fire to a large bundle of polystyrene. I can't prove it, but it would explain more or less everything.

Fiona Dodwell: "Morrissey reflects on 'the horror of 2020' after departure from BMG" (November 17, 2020)

A list of artists who have released albums on BMG this year. What's obvious from this is that it can't be Moz's age or his difficulty in getting playlisted on Radio 1 that has caused BMG to lose interest. But it also can't be a simple matter of not selling enough units. IMO, the main factor...

Possibly Warners, in exchange for sign-off on unreleased Smiths material (?)

Guess it wouldn't be insane to speculate that 3 years from the day of the first album release would give BMG a termination date. Anal, maybe, but not quite insane.

My suspicion is that Morrissey wants more from a record deal than is necessarily realistic nowadays for an artist like him. He wants to spend 100 grand on recording, then he wants billboards, newspaper ads and vanity 7-inches. Then, on the other hand, he won't do promotion, or rub along with the...

This doesn't really stack up when you look at where BMG are willing to put their money. Every album on the label in the charts this week is by a solo artist over 50. Kylie's at number one. They've got various old fogie big name acts, but also quite a few who probably don't sell as many records...

It owns Sanctuary, but not Morrissey's recordings for them. Like many Sanctuary artists, Moz had a reversion clause, so that when Sanctuary was sold, he got the rights to the stuff he recorded for them. It's possible, though, that BMG have licenced that part of his back catalogue from him.

Boz definitely had an NDA in the early 90s. I don't really see it as such a big deal, though. He's an employee.

Moz being dropped by BMG has nothing to do with 'diversity'. If it they had dropped every white male has-been on their roster, then that might make sense. But they've only dropped one.
