Who wrote this!? (wikipedia)

Dear Dave,

If you are in English class and are to interpret a poem for your exam, you will not get a good mark if you interpret another poem instead, or if you start to talk about Shakespeare the person and his supposed or not supposed sex life when you are asked to interpret one of his plays or sonnets.

By the way, was Shakespeare gay? People are not quite sure if he really existed, are they? ;)

Christ..what does it matter what he is?
It's not like any of us will get to sleep with him no matter what he's into, so I just say we listen to his music and stop thinking so hard :thumb:

Well, no, it is not that easy either. After all this is the man who sang "SING your life". Never blindly listen to what somebody is telling you. It is always helpful to crosscheck who the person is who is telling you something. I find it amusing that the guy who came up with the expression "homosexual" and is claimed to be a sex specialist was impotent until he was 60. And my empirical studies prof reminded us to always have a look at who funded the research if we read about research findings. The latter was one of the most useful advises I ever received in my life. :)

Moz has also said that he hates artists who fling their personal lives into the public eye. Honestly if he wanted to be as direct as some people are determining by his lyrics, he would. But he keeps his hidden. For his sake and ours. Anyone can write songs about wanting males or females. It's the eternal quest for love, and it's a healthy exercise to write about it. He's said he's always been truthful with us through his writing: we know nothing for certain. What does that tell you? :)

He seems quite desperate at times during concerts to explain what his songs are supposed to mean by his body language. I just had a giggle about how he hopped up and down to "the motion of taxis excites me" at the Brixton Academy. Must have been quite a bumpy street that he drove along in that taxi.* At the end of This Charming Man he turned around to the Backdrop to indicate that this was the one who knows so much about these things.

* Reminds me of a German movie, the director of which I met in a Café during the Berlinale once and had a lengthier conversation with about movie making. This movie, he told me, I had to watch. I did. It was about three young women who wanted to have their first orgasm. One of them had a boyfriend... still she had her first orgasm on her bicycle. A hilarious scene in the movie. An elder couple sees her and the woman says to her husband something like "We need to ride the bike more often." The young woman then went to her boyfriend to tell him that she never had an orgasm with him, he lied to her. Something like this, has been a while since I watched the movie. Anyway, her boyfriend tells her to do it to herself and she proudly turns around to him and says: "I just did! With my bicycle!"

Terrifyingly naive? Good sir/madam, read the post I've just quoted, and tell me that you did not just ask me the same question I asked you. Seems like avoiding the question is terrifyingly naive and that "labeling" someone whose question you didn't even bother to answer to justify your position as terrifyingly naive is unnecessarily impolite.

now this might surprise you, but it's impossible to be nothing.
even you are something. you should make something out of it ;)

I didn't say it that it is impossible to be nothing..We're talking about sexual orientation, not existentialism.
It is very possible to not have a sexual preference.

Dear Silke,

Hey, does your username rhyme with milk or milky?
anyway, you have to look at the body of work in my opinion. We weren't so much talking about "the end of the family line" as we were talking about the article author's opinion.

No. :)

only if you are dead. remember: to say "no" IS a choice

i think we're talking about the author's work (in general), not about the person, as it would not make any sense. so if you look at morrissey's lyrics, performance, intonation etc. you will find tons of references to gay (sub-)culture. but there is no affirmation of straight culture. if you disagree (which you most probably will do), please reply with proofs.

and if you think someone is only gay, when he says:"hello, my name is x and i am gay", i'm afraid, you just don't understand language

Hello, my name is Sharron and I am gay.

Thank you Sharron.

And now, Alamo, that you know that Sharron is gay, please describe her. What do you now think about her, what springs to your mind? Please include hairstyle, clothes like shirts, trousers, shoes, how she walks and moves, the music she listens to, the pubs and clubs she goes to, the way she talks, hobbies, profession, you name it. You know, all that is part of what you say is part of gay culture.

1. so, you don't know any straight references in morrisseys work?

2. please read, understand and answer. i've doubted that sharron is gay. (if she's female she can't be anyway). moreover, i don't know anything about sharron, so i can't describe any style, haircut etc. remember your own words: "If you are in English class and are to interpret a poem for your exam, you will not get a good mark if you interpret another poem instead, or if you start to talk about Shakespeare the person and his supposed or not supposed sex life when you are asked to interpret one of his plays or sonnets." we should stick to morrissey's OUEVRE

1. lesbians are trannies?

2. i know women who would consider themselves gay. have they misclassed themsevles? so gay marriage is only limited to men having civil ceremonies? women don't come under that term?

1. i've never said so

2. i only know lesbians and trannies who think that it's very excluding and phallocentric to use the term "gay". it's erasing them.

from compact oxford english dictionary:

gay

• adjective (gayer, gayest) 1 (especially of a man) homosexual. 2 relating to homosexuals. 3 dated light-hearted and carefree. 4 dated brightly coloured; showy.

• noun a homosexual person, especially a man.

— DERIVATIVES gayness noun.

— USAGE Gay is now a standard term for ‘homosexual’, and is the term preferred by homosexual men to describe themselves. As a result, it is now very difficult to use gay in its earlier meanings ‘carefree’ or ‘bright and showy’ without arousing a sense of double entendre. Gay in its modern sense typically refers to men, lesbian being the standard term for homosexual women.

— ORIGIN Old French gai.
