Well Johnny Marr decided to form a new group, and recruited Morrissey as it's frontman. From then on you could say it was Moz's band, but at the very beginning it was Marr's.

johnny did not recrute moz, he paid him a visit at his home and suggested they write together to which moz after some consideration said yes, that doesn't mean that johnny formed the smiths.
