Jesse belonged to an American rock group called Mother Tongue in Los Angeles. There he caught the attention of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who recruited him as a replacement for John Frusciante. Jesse was a chili pepper for a very short time, however. He quickly moved on and became the guitar player for Alanis Morrisette's band on her first tour for Jagged Little Pill. It was on this tour, in 1996, that he met Angie Hart, the lead singer of Frente, Alanis' opening act. They married and formed the band 'Splendid'.

Jesse toured with other recording artists, playing guitar and working as music director for Michelle Branch and Vanessa Carlton's live shows. He also scored some music for the television show, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, for which he received an Emmy nomination in 2002.
